Claude for Government is Anthropic’s dedicated AI service for eligible U.S. public-sector organizations, delivered inside a FedRAMP High-authorized environment. As of Anthropic’s September 30, 2026 general-availability announcement, it offers usage-based billing with a hard spending cap, department and user-level controls, and reviewable audit logs. Anthropic says the service is authorized for CUI and FIPS 199 High Impact data.

What Claude for Government is—and who can use it

Claude for Government provides Claude’s coding and agentic capabilities through a dedicated government environment. Anthropic says federal, state, and local agencies, along with qualifying public-sector organizations—including contractors supporting government work—can seek access through its government sales process. The service entered public beta in July 2026 and became generally available on September 30, 2026, according to Anthropic.

FedRAMP High describes the authorization of the service environment, not a blanket authorization for every way of accessing Claude. An agency should confirm that its intended service, deployment, data, and use case fall within the authorized boundary and its own approved operating procedures.

How the spending controls work

Anthropic says agencies pay for usage in fixed increments, with a hard not-to-exceed cap rather than seat fees. The cap is tied to what the agency has obligated, so usage cannot exceed that amount under the announced billing model. Administrators can set up user tiers with spend and model limits, monitor usage by user and model, and receive alerts as prepaid balances run down.

Controls can also be applied across organizational levels. Department administrators can allocate prepaid usage to sub-agencies. SCIM group mappings can define rate limits, dollar caps, and which models a group may use. This gives agencies a way to align access and budgets with existing identity groups instead of treating the entire organization as one pool.

Anthropic’s announcement does not publish a standard price per increment or a cost comparison with Claude Enterprise or cloud-provider deployments. Agencies should therefore evaluate expected usage and procurement terms directly rather than infer savings from the absence of seat fees.

What the audit logs record

Anthropic says administrative actions are recorded in a hash-chained audit log that organization administrators can review in the product. Hash-chaining is intended to make alterations to the sequence detectable; it is an auditability feature, not by itself a substitute for an agency’s own oversight or records procedures. The July 7, 2026 launch announcement also says sensitive operations on Anthropic’s side require two-person approval.

Usage exports contain metering data only, according to Anthropic. That distinction matters for compliance reviews: agencies can export usage and audit records, but the stated export is not a copy of conversations or other sensitive content. Agencies should plan any required evidence collection around the records the service actually provides.

Data handling and authorized use

Anthropic’s product page identifies Claude for Government as the company’s FedRAMP High offering and says it is authorized for Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) and FIPS 199 High Impact data. The same page says conversation history remains on each user’s device, while administrators can export usage and audit records. Agencies should still follow their classification, endpoint-management, retention, and handling rules; an authorization for specified data types does not make every workflow appropriate automatically.

The service runs in a dedicated, pre-authorized government environment. That is different from using the standard commercial Claude service or a direct Anthropic API endpoint: Anthropic says Claude Enterprise is assessed against federal controls but is not FedRAMP authorized, and its direct API is not FedRAMP authorized today.

How it compares with Claude Enterprise and cloud-hosted Claude

“Cloud-hosted Claude” can refer to Claude accessed through a cloud provider’s government offering, rather than through Anthropic’s own government service. Anthropic identifies Amazon Bedrock in AWS GovCloud and Google Vertex AI with Assured Workloads as alternatives for agencies that need a FedRAMP High route. Their authorization boundaries and agency responsibilities are tied to those specific provider deployments, not automatically to Claude for Government.

Capabilities and deployment considerations

Claude Code is included in the Claude for Government Desktop app, with sign-in and inference through the FedRAMP High boundary. Anthropic describes potential workflows such as software modernization, memo drafting, RFP review, casework, and presentation creation. These are examples of intended uses, not a guarantee that every workflow or connected data source is approved for a particular agency.

Anthropic announced Claude for Microsoft 365 for early access through the same environment and administrative controls. That is an early-access announcement, not confirmation that the integration is generally available. The service deploys through standard agency mobile device management (MDM) platforms. Anthropic also publishes a FedRAMP Secure Configuration Guide and makes a penetration-test summary available through its Trust Center under NDA.

Desktop transition date

Anthropic Help Center guidance says all organizations will move to the updated Claude for Government Desktop offering by October 4, 2026. Because that date is four days after the September 30 general-availability announcement, organizations using the product should check Anthropic’s current Desktop guidance and coordinate the transition with their agency’s MDM administrators.
