Claude Desktop Won’t Open After a Windows Update? What to Try

Ending Claude processes is worth checking after an MSIX update, but it did not fix the cited Claude failure. Here’s a safer recovery sequence for Windows.

If Claude Desktop stopped opening after an update on Windows, ending any remaining Claude processes is a sensible first check—but it is not a confirmed fix for this specific failure. One Windows MSIX user reported that ending Claude.exe did not help, while restarting Windows restored that installation. Work through the lower-risk checks first, and use Windows’ Repair option before Reset if it is available.

What the reported “Another program is currently using this file” error means

A user report opened July 22, 2026 describes Claude Desktop installed as an MSIX package, version Claude_1.24012.1.0_x64__pzs8sxrjxfjjc. After an in-app update, Windows displayed “Another program is currently using this file.” The reporter said no Claude.exe process was visible; ending the visible process, stopping CoworkVMService, and manually re-registering the package did not restore launch. A full Windows restart did.

That is one user’s account, not an official Anthropic diagnosis or a guaranteed remedy. The reporter’s suggestion that a Windows AppInfo/UAC-related object remained stuck is a hypothesis, not a confirmed cause. A separate July 14, 2026 user report describes an update where the old process did not finish quitting, the new package registered, and the relaunched app hung before a later manual relaunch worked. These reports show that update and quit problems have been reported; they do not establish how often they occur or that a particular fix works for everyone. Try these recovery steps in order

  1. Save work and close Claude normally. If the app is responsive, use its normal quit command before intervening.
  2. End only remaining Claude processes. Open Task Manager, identify processes clearly belonging to Claude, and end them. Microsoft recommends closing running instances and, if necessary, terminating background processes when an MSIX update is blocked because the package is in use. Its generic PowerShell example is Get-Process -Name "MyApp" | Stop-Process -Force; do not copy that placeholder as-is. Use a process name only when you know it targets the intended app. Microsoft’s MSIX troubleshooting guide.
  3. Try launching Claude again. If it still will not open, do not assume repeated process termination will help; it did not resolve the specific July 22 report.
  4. Check the deployment log before making bigger changes. In Event Viewer, open Applications and Services Logs → Microsoft → Windows → AppxDeployment-Server → Operational. Note the error text and timestamp around the failed update or launch. The log can show deployment events; it does not repair the app. A completed manual re-registration in the July 22 report did not, by itself, restore launch. Microsoft’s MSIX troubleshooting guide.
  5. Use Repair if Windows offers it. Open the app’s Windows Advanced options and choose Repair. Microsoft describes Repair as refreshing the installation while retaining app data. This documentation does not promise that Repair fixes this particular Claude failure. Microsoft: Reset or Repair MSIX Apps.
  6. Restart Windows if the app remains blocked. A full restart restored the one reported Claude installation after other attempts failed, but that individual result is not a universal fix. If Claude still will not launch, preserve the exact error and relevant log events and contact current Claude support rather than repeatedly killing processes or deleting app data.

Repair and Reset are not the same

Use Repair first when available. Reset is more disruptive: Microsoft says it reinstalls the app and permanently removes app data, including preferences and sign-in details. Choose it only if you accept that loss and Repair has not helped. The cited Microsoft documentation explains the Windows options but does not establish that either one resolves this particular Claude issue. Microsoft: Reset or Repair MSIX Apps.

For IT administrators: check who manages Claude updates

Anthropic’s Windows deployment guidance says Claude Desktop’s MSIX is available for x64 and arm64. It distinguishes per-user installation with Add-AppxPackage from machine-wide provisioning with Add-AppxProvisionedPackage. For managed devices, coordinate which system owns updates rather than letting MDM and Claude’s updater work at cross-purposes.

  • MDM-managed schedule: Anthropic says administrators can use the disableAutoUpdates policy to disable Claude’s automatic updates and deliver versions on the MDM schedule.
  • Claude-managed updates: The MDM can instead detect whether a sufficiently recent package is installed while Claude manages version updates. Anthropic says Claude checks for updates about every four hours by default, independently of the version assigned by MDM.

These are deployment choices for administrators, not end-user recovery steps. See Anthropic’s Windows deployment guidance.
