If Premiere Pro will not open, first check Adobe’s current known issues, update the app, and clear any stuck background process. Then choose the next step based on what you see: no splash screen, a plug-in name where startup stalls, a macOS folder-access prompt, or Windows error 0xc000007b. The fixes below start with low-risk checks and reserve preference resets, plug-in isolation, or reinstallation for the symptoms that point to them.
Before changing settings, note what happens at launch
Write down your operating system, Premiere Pro version if known, any error code, whether the splash screen appears, and the last plug-in name shown if startup stops there. These details help distinguish a general crash from the specific cases below. Begin by checking Adobe’s current known issues and general crash guidance; a release-specific issue may affect startup.

Try the general fixes first
- Update Premiere Pro. Adobe recommends installing the latest version for stability and issue fixes. Check the known-issues page first in case it describes your symptom.
- Force quit Premiere Pro, then reopen it. If that does not help, restart the computer to clear a temporary system problem.
- On Windows, check your Windows build and system architecture. Adobe’s general guidance asks users to check the Windows 11 build number and whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit. This check alone does not identify the cause of a crash.
- If the problem continues, back up and reset preferences. Follow the steps below before clearing or replacing custom settings.

Premiere may still be running in the background even when no launch window is visible. Open Activity Monitor on macOS or Task Manager on Windows, find a Premiere Pro process, and force quit it if present. Then try opening the app again.

If no process is running, or Premiere still will not open after you close one, Adobe suggests resetting preferences or clearing the media cache. Use the preference reset only after backing up custom settings; the cache-clearing steps are below. Adobe’s missing-splash-screen guidance covers these options.
Reset preferences without losing your backup
Preference resets can affect custom keyboard shortcuts, workspaces, and style settings. Back up the preferences before resetting. For a manual reset, close Premiere, then rename or move the profile folder for the installed version so the original remains available. When Premiere next opens, it creates a new folder with default settings.

Replace the placeholders with your Windows or macOS user name and the installed Premiere version and profile. Keep the moved folder until you have restored the custom settings you need. Adobe provides these locations and the reset procedure in its preference reset instructions.
Clear the media cache if Premiere can open its Reset options
- Quit Premiere Pro.
- Relaunch it while holding Command on macOS or Ctrl on Windows to open the Reset options dialog.
- Select Clear media cache files.
Adobe describes cache clearing as maintenance and a way to help identify or resolve application problems. The same option is suggested for some launch failures; it is not a guarantee that the cache caused the problem. See Adobe’s media-cache instructions.

If macOS shows a folder-access prompt
Premiere needs access to Desktop, Documents, and Downloads. If access was denied or revoked, quit Premiere and enable its listed folder permissions in macOS. Adobe’s documented path is System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Privacy > Files and Folders; find the installed Premiere version and enable the relevant listed folders, then relaunch.
Choosing Deny or opening preferences can make Premiere quit because it needs to restart after permission is granted. Menu labels can differ between macOS releases. Adobe’s guidance concerns the listed folders; it does not call for granting broad disk access. If the permissions appear correct but the prompt continues, Adobe says the system permission database may be corrupted and recommends uninstalling Premiere, restarting the Mac, and reinstalling it. If the splash screen stalls on a plug-in
If the splash screen repeatedly stops while showing the same plug-in name, check whether that third-party plug-in is compatible with your Premiere version. To test whether it is involved, temporarily move third-party plug-ins out of the MediaCore folder, then try launching Premiere:

If Premiere opens after the plug-ins are isolated, update the suspected plug-in or contact its vendor for a compatible version. A splash-screen hang can have other causes, so this is a diagnostic test rather than a universal fix. Adobe’s plug-in troubleshooting guidance describes the isolation step.

If Windows reports error 0xc000007b
This is a specific Windows error branch, not a general fix for every startup failure. Adobe recommends updating Microsoft Visual C++ Libraries. If Premiere still crashes, try reverting to an earlier Premiere version. If that does not resolve the problem, share the crash details and crash log with Adobe. Follow Adobe’s instructions for error 0xc000007b.

Check Adobe’s current known-issue guidance for your version, and use the exact error or splash-screen clue when seeking help. For the Windows 0xc000007b case, Adobe specifically recommends sharing crash details and a crash log if its fixes do not work.
