Claude Code suits people who want a terminal-based agent to work across files; an Obsidian AI plugin fits people who want help inside their notes, with vault-aware context or search. You can also combine them: some Obsidian plugins connect to Claude Code or expose Obsidian-specific tools to it.
How Claude Code and Obsidian AI plugins differ
Claude Code is an agent runtime that works through a terminal and can operate on files and configured tools. Obsidian is the note-taking environment; its community plugins add AI interfaces, vault-specific features, or connections to external agents. They work at different layers, so the choice is not necessarily one or the other.

For example, Obsidian Copilot’s current community listing describes support for an existing Claude Code installation. Code Workbench documents optional local tools that give Claude Code access to Obsidian-aware operations. Companion describes Claude Code as one of its desktop agent backends. These are examples of integration, not evidence that either approach is more accurate or productive overall.

Choose Claude Code directly for broader file work
Use Claude Code directly if you prefer the terminal, want an agent that can work beyond an Obsidian vault, and are comfortable configuring access and permissions. Its general file access can be useful for work spanning a vault and other project files. Obsidian-specific links, metadata, and search may require additional integration rather than being inherent to the terminal workflow.

Choose an Obsidian plugin for in-app assistance
Start with an Obsidian plugin if you want to ask questions from the note app, work with the active note, or use vault-specific retrieval without building that workflow yourself. Capabilities differ: check whether a plugin resolves wikilinks, uses backlinks or metadata, searches semantically, or merely passes selected text to a model.
Combine them when you want both
A plugin can provide Obsidian context or controls while Claude Code supplies the agent workflow. Copilot’s listing describes support for an existing Claude Code setup; Code Workbench describes optional Obsidian-aware tools; Companion describes Claude Code as a backend. Combining tools can add setup and permissions to review, so do it for a clear benefit rather than assuming every integration improves results.
What vault-aware retrieval actually means
“Search my notes” can refer to several different operations. A plugin may pass the current note, resolve Obsidian links, retrieve related notes from a semantic index, or expose read and write operations to an agent. These capabilities are not interchangeable, and they are not present in every plugin.

Code Workbench’s listing documents tools for backlinks, outgoing links, wikilink resolution, frontmatter, and ranked vault search. It says full-text search within note bodies is left to ripgrep, which Claude Code already runs. Semantic Notes Vault MCP describes vault search, reading, writing, and graph traversal through MCP for clients including Claude Code. Review each listing’s current configuration and supported operations before relying on a feature.
Claude Code can read files, but file access alone does not necessarily reproduce Obsidian’s understanding of links and vault structure. Conversely, a plugin’s Obsidian awareness does not establish that its answers are accurate: the available product documentation does not provide a controlled comparison of retrieval quality, setup time, or user outcomes.
Check write permissions before connecting a vault
Read-only access, approval-gated edits, and command execution carry different levels of risk. Before using an agent on valuable notes, check what it can read, change, or run, and whether you see a confirmation before changes take effect.

- Code Workbench: its listing says vault tools are disabled by default and describes approval before write operations apply. That is a plugin-specific design, not a guarantee about other plugins.
- Claude Vault Assistant: its listing warns that enabled tools determine what the agent can do. It says adding Bash can allow arbitrary commands during a run without prompting.
- Claude Code plugins and MCP: Anthropic’s help page explains that plugins can run skills, sub-agents, hooks, and MCP servers on the computer, and cautions that local MCP servers run with the permissions of the programs the user runs.
These are descriptions from product and plugin documentation, not an independent security audit. Start with the least access that supports your task, and expand it only after you understand the effect.

A plugin running on your computer does not by itself mean that model processing stays there. Companion says prompts and attached vault context are sent according to the selected backend. Claude Vault Assistant says content Claude reads through its CLI is sent to Anthropic for processing. A local-model route may use a different data path; verify the model provider, endpoint, and settings rather than inferring privacy from the plugin’s location.
Apply the same check to both direct Claude Code use and an Obsidian plugin: identify which notes or excerpts are sent, which provider receives them, and what credentials or account the integration uses. Avoid attaching sensitive notes until you have checked the actual route for your chosen configuration.

Accounts and costs vary by plugin and provider
There is no single price or account requirement for “Obsidian AI plugins.” Copilot’s listing says it can work without a Copilot license when using an existing agent account, a provider key, or a local model, while the provider may charge separately. Its listing directs users to its pricing page and in-app model picker for current entitlements. Other plugins and backends may have different requirements; confirm them in their current documentation rather than assuming a subscription includes model usage.
How to decide
- Choose the interface: decide whether you want to work in a terminal, inside Obsidian, or use both.
- Identify the retrieval you need: if answers must follow wikilinks, backlinks, metadata, or vault relationships, check that the specific plugin or integration supports those operations.
- Set an acceptable permission level: decide whether read-only access is enough, whether edits need approval, and whether command execution is acceptable.
- Trace the data path: check which model backend receives prompts and note context, and whether usage requires a separate account, key, or charge.
- Test on a small, non-sensitive set of notes: verify that the tool finds the notes and links you expect before using it for important or private material.
Is either one objectively better?
No independent winner is established by the available product and plugin documentation. It does not report a controlled comparison of accuracy, speed, setup burden, or outcomes for personal knowledge bases. Treat feature descriptions as claims about what a particular tool offers, not proof that it will work better for your vault.

For a terminal-first user seeking broader file work, Claude Code is the more natural starting point. For someone who wants an in-app workflow and vault-aware context, an Obsidian plugin is the more direct fit. If you need both, an integration may combine them, provided its retrieval, permissions, and data routing suit your needs.
