A software media server is an application that organizes or exposes a media library on a network-connected host and streams it to client apps on devices such as TVs, phones, tablets, and computers. It is software—not necessarily a dedicated appliance—and in a personal-media setup it generally manages files you provide rather than supplying a movie or music collection.
What a media server includes
A typical setup has two parts: server software running on a host, and client apps that connect to it. The server can catalog media in a central library; clients browse that library and request playback. Plex describes this server-and-client model in its Plex overview, while Jellyfin describes its software as a system for managing and streaming media from a dedicated server to devices through apps on its About page.

- Host: A computer or another compatible device that runs the server and can access the media files.
- Library: Folders or collections of media that the server organizes and makes available.
- Clients: Apps on supported TVs, phones, tablets, computers, or other devices that connect to the server.
These components let you manage a collection in one place and access it from multiple devices on your network. Remote access may also be available, but it depends on the product’s setup and your network configuration.

- Make media available to the host. Store files on the host or give it access to folders on another storage device.
- Set up the library. Configure the server to use the relevant folders or libraries. Depending on the software, it can organize the collection and display associated information.
- Connect a client. Open a supported client app on a device and connect it to the server to browse the library.
- Play a file. If the client supports the media’s format, the server can stream it directly. If the client cannot handle that format, a server may convert the media into one it can process. Conversion capability depends on the product, file, client, and host; it is not guaranteed for every combination.
What can run the server?
A media server is an application, so it can run on suitable hardware that can access the library and is supported by the chosen software. Plex lists computers, compatible NAS devices, and NVIDIA SHIELD among possible hosts in its support overview. Emby also describes running its server on a computer or NAS in its quick-start guide.

A NAS for a media server is an option, not a requirement. Check the software’s compatibility information for the particular NAS and operating system before choosing a host; support for one product or device does not establish support for another.
Media server software versus streaming services
A personal media server typically organizes and streams media files you make available to it. That is different from subscribing to a service whose catalog is supplied by a provider. Some platforms offer both kinds of access, so distinguish the personal library from any separate service content. For example, Plex’s overview discusses its Movies & Shows, live TV, and music offerings alongside its server product. Emby’s quick-start guide explicitly says Emby is not a service that provides movies or TV shows.

To compare them for a real setup, start with the devices you want to use and the formats in your collection. Then check host compatibility, available client apps, library organization, conversion behavior, licensing or paid-feature arrangements, and the steps needed for remote access. No single option is best for every combination of devices, media, and priorities.
