Can You Run Linux Without Installing It? Live USBs and Other Options

A live USB lets you try Linux on your computer without installing it to the internal drive. Here’s how it works, what to watch out for, and how it compares with WSL, virtual machines, and cloud shells.

Yes. You can run Linux without installing it on your computer by booting from a live USB or, where supported, a DVD and choosing a try-live-session option instead of the installer. That method still uses a downloaded ISO file, but Linux runs from removable media rather than being installed on the internal drive. If you want to avoid ISO media entirely, WSL, a virtual machine, or a cloud shell may fit—but each works differently.

What “without installing it from an ISO” can mean

An ISO is a disk-image file. The usual way to try a Linux desktop without installing Linux to your computer is to download a distribution’s ISO, write it to bootable removable media, restart, and boot from that media. Canonical documents Ubuntu’s live session as a way to try the desktop without changing the computer’s configuration; restarting without the USB or DVD returns the computer to its previous state. See Canonical’s Ubuntu live-session guide.

If you mean “without installing Linux on the internal drive,” a live USB is the most direct answer. If you mean “without downloading or using an ISO at all,” choose a different route, such as WSL, a local virtual machine, or a hosted shell.

How to try Linux from a live USB

  1. Choose a Linux distribution. Download its ISO from the distribution’s official site. Check that the download is intended for your computer’s hardware.
  2. Prepare a USB drive. Use an image-writing utility to write the ISO as bootable media. For example, Rufus describes creating bootable USB drives from Linux ISOs. Writing boot media can prepare the selected drive for booting; keep any files you need from it somewhere else first.
  3. Restart and open the boot menu. Select the USB drive as the startup device. The key varies by computer; F12 is common, while Escape and F2 are also used. Watch the startup screen or consult the computer maker’s instructions.
  4. Choose the live or try option, not the installer. Ubuntu’s documented option is “Try Ubuntu without installing.” Other distributions may use different labels. If the desktop welcome screen offers a choice between trying the system and installing it, choose the try option.
  5. Use the live desktop, then shut down or restart. Save any work you need to keep before leaving the session; ordinary live sessions should be treated as temporary unless the distribution and media setup explicitly support persistence.

Microsoft’s documented boot-media workflow typically uses a USB drive with at least 16 GB, but that is a recommendation for its described workflow—not a universal minimum for every Linux distribution or image-writing tool. See Microsoft’s installation guide.

What a live session can—and cannot—do

A live system runs on the computer’s hardware, so it is useful for trying the desktop and checking whether basic hardware works before installing. Ubuntu says its live desktop can also be used to browse, access and edit files on the computer or USB drive, and perform some repair tasks. However, hardware, drivers, peripherals, or applications may not all work as expected; Microsoft notes that Linux device compatibility and driver issues can occur.

“Doesn’t alter the computer’s configuration” does not mean every action in a live session is harmless. The live environment may let you access internal storage. Avoid installer, partitioning, or disk-writing operations unless you intend to change a drive. If Windows uses BitLocker, Microsoft advises retrieving and storing the recovery key before live booting or dual booting Linux.

Do not assume files or settings created during a live session will survive a restart. Persistence depends on the distribution and how the boot media is configured. Save important work somewhere else, and follow the chosen distribution’s current instructions if you need a persistent live USB.

Which Linux option fits your goal?

Option Best for Hardware and desktop Persistence and dependencies
Live USB or DVD Trying Linux on the actual computer Boots Linux directly on the machine. Windows or macOS is not running alongside it in the same session. Changes may be temporary unless persistence is explicitly configured. Requires boot media; no hosted account is inherent to the method.
WSL Using Linux command-line tools or supported GUI apps alongside Windows Runs Linux tools and GUI apps alongside the Windows desktop; it is not a direct hardware trial. Requires enabling or installing WSL and a Linux distribution. See Microsoft’s WSL FAQ.
Local virtual machine Running an isolated Linux computer in a window Linux runs as a guest operating system under a hypervisor, with virtualized hardware; display-driver or hardware-integration limitations can arise. Requires a hypervisor and VM disk, plus allocated computer resources. Microsoft outlines the setup in its installation guide.
Cloud shell Getting Linux command-line access in a browser Runs on a hosted machine, not on the computer’s local hardware; it is not a full local desktop trial. Depends on internet and service access. Google Cloud Shell uses a managed, temporary Debian-based VM. Google documents 5 GB of free persistent home-directory storage, available across sessions; ephemeral mode deletes session files when the VM ends. See Cloud Shell usage documentation and Cloud Shell concepts.

Choose a live USB if your priority is testing the real computer or trying a full desktop without installing Linux to its internal drive. Choose WSL for Linux tools alongside Windows, a virtual machine for an isolated local environment, or a cloud shell for browser-based command-line access.
