Consider Claude Code when you want a coding agent to draft or maintain text-based diagram source inside a software project. These are different workflows, not equivalent diagramming applications: AWS renamed Application Composer to Infrastructure Composer, while Anthropic’s documentation describes Claude Code as a project-oriented coding agent rather than a dedicated architecture-diagram canvas.
What changed: Application Composer is now Infrastructure Composer
AWS calls the product AWS Infrastructure Composer, formerly known as Application Composer. AWS describes it as a visual way to compose and configure applications on AWS and visualize CloudFormation infrastructure. See the AWS Infrastructure Composer overview.

If you are looking for current documentation or console references, use the Infrastructure Composer name. The comparison below is about choosing between its AWS resource-and-template canvas and a code-centered workflow with Claude Code—not comparing two products with the same purpose.

How each workflow represents an architecture
AWS Infrastructure Composer: AWS resources linked to a template
Infrastructure Composer provides a visual canvas and a template view. In CloudFormation console mode, users can drag resource cards onto the canvas, configure them, and connect certain components. The interface also includes a resource palette and list, properties panel, groups, arrange and zoom controls, and options to open or save templates, sync locally, and export the canvas. Console labels and availability can change; consult AWS’s guide to using Infrastructure Composer for current details.
#1 Best Overall
Not every relationship is drawn the same way. Enhanced component cards have connector ports, and connections between them appear as lines. Standard infrastructure-as-code resource cards do not have ports: event-driven relationships are specified in the application template and detected for display as dotted lines. The distinction matters because a visible connection can come from the template rather than a user-drawn link on the canvas. AWS explains the card and connection behavior in its documentation on connecting resources.
Claude Code: a coding agent working in a project
Anthropic documents Claude Code as software launched from a development project, with command-line workflows for interactive use, print mode, project directories, permissions, and output settings. Its setup and CLI references are Anthropic’s Claude Code setup guide and CLI reference.
For diagrams, the plausible fit is to ask the agent to create or edit text-based diagram source that belongs in the project, then inspect that source with the project’s usual tools. That is a practical application of a coding agent, not a documented first-party diagram mode. The cited Anthropic material does not establish a dedicated visual canvas, resource palette, particular diagram language, or automatic AWS architecture validation.
Which should you use to diagram AWS architecture?
| Need | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Visually compose or inspect AWS application resources | AWS Infrastructure Composer | AWS documents it specifically for AWS applications and CloudFormation infrastructure, with a visual canvas and template view. |
| See resource properties and relationships in a canvas tied to infrastructure code | AWS Infrastructure Composer | Its canvas represents resource cards; some connections are visual, while standard IaC relationships are inferred from the template and shown with dotted lines. |
| Work on text-based diagram source within a software project | Claude Code, as a code-centered workflow | Claude Code runs in a project and supports CLI-driven prompts and permissions; using it for diagram source is an inferred use, not a documented dedicated feature. |
| Get an authoritative architecture or deployment-ready validation automatically | Neither is established by the cited documentation | The available product descriptions do not establish that either workflow makes an architecture diagram authoritative or validates it for deployment. |
This recommendation follows the products’ documented workflows; it is not a speed or quality benchmark. Favor Infrastructure Composer when the work is AWS resource modeling or visual inspection of a CloudFormation-backed application. Consider Claude Code when the artifact is diagram source maintained as project code and you want an agent to help edit it.

What to review before relying on either diagram
- Check the architecture against the system requirements. A canvas or generated source is a representation to review, not proof that the design is complete or correct.
- For Infrastructure Composer, inspect the template as well as the canvas. In particular, confirm event-driven relationships that the tool displays from template declarations rather than connector-port links.
- For Claude Code, review the source and its rendered result with your normal project tools. The cited documentation does not promise a specific diagram renderer or AWS-specific correctness check.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is AWS Application Composer the same product as Infrastructure Composer?
Yes. AWS says Infrastructure Composer was formerly known as Application Composer; use the current Infrastructure Composer name when looking for documentation.
Can Claude Code make architecture diagrams?
It can be used in a code-centered workflow to draft or modify text-based diagram source in a project, but the cited Anthropic documentation does not describe a dedicated diagram canvas or a first-party diagram feature.
