No—the Galaxy S22 Ultra S Pen does not need charging for on-screen writing or drawing. It does need charge for Bluetooth-based Air Actions, such as using the pen button to control the camera or media playback. Samsung says the pen charges automatically when it is inserted into the phone.
What works when the S Pen is uncharged?
Writing and drawing still work
The S Pen uses its tip to write and draw directly on the Galaxy S22 Ultra display. That basic screen input does not depend on the pen’s charge.

Air Actions need charge
Air Actions are remote controls that communicate over Bluetooth Low Energy, rather than screen input. Samsung says the S Pen must be charged to use them. Depending on the app and settings, Air Actions can include camera shutter or camera-switching controls and media playback commands. Available actions vary by app. Samsung Ireland’s Air Actions guidance describes the feature, while Samsung Singapore’s charging guidance covers charging.
How to charge the S Pen
- Insert the S Pen fully into its slot in the Galaxy S22 Ultra.
- If Air Actions are disabled, Samsung Singapore says the S Pen charges only while the phone itself is charging. Enable Air Actions if you want the pen to charge when the phone is not charging.
Samsung Australia states that a full charge takes about seven minutes. The same regional support guidance reports up to 20 minutes of continuous Air Action use and 24 hours of standby. What if the S Pen battery is dead?
You can continue using the pen for writing and drawing on the screen; remote Air Actions will not work until the pen has charge. Insert it in the phone’s slot to recharge it. A separate charger is not needed for ordinary screen use.
Will another S Pen work?
Compatibility depends on the exact pen model. Samsung Australia notes that some other S Pens can write on the screen but do not support Air Actions. If you are replacing a missing or damaged pen, check that the replacement is specifically compatible with the Galaxy S22 Ultra and supports its remote functions. Samsung’s compatibility guidance explains the distinction.
