Screen writing and wireless Air actions are separate: the pen may still write even when its remote button or gestures are disconnected. You do not pair it through the phone’s standard Bluetooth menu.
Reconnect the S Pen and check its charge
The S Pen stores inside the Galaxy S22 Ultra. Insert it fully into its slot to reconnect it to the phone and charge it. If the pen disconnects during a connection or reset process, leave it in place until that process finishes.

Air actions rely on the pen’s wireless connection, while writing directly on the display does not. Keep the pen near the phone while checking the connection; Samsung describes its operating range as limited, not as a guaranteed distance in every setting. Check Air actions settings and permissions
- Open Settings > Advanced features > S Pen > Air actions. Confirm that Air actions is turned on. Menu labels can vary with the phone’s software version.
- If commands still do not work, open Settings > Apps, find the Air command system app, and check that it has the Nearby devices and Physical activity permissions Samsung identifies for this function.
- Check whether Airplane mode or a power-saving restriction is disabling wireless functionality. Turn off the restriction temporarily and test the S Pen again.
Rule out interference
Magnetic or metal objects near the phone, as well as some third-party cases, covers, or accessories, can interfere with the S Pen connection. Remove accessories temporarily and test again. If that helps, put them back one at a time to identify the cause. This does not mean every case or screen protector will interfere.

Reset the S Pen, then restart the phone
If reconnecting, charging, and checking settings do not restore Air actions, reset the pen from its settings:
- Insert the S Pen fully into the phone and keep it there during the reset.
- Go to Settings > Advanced features > S Pen > Air actions.
- Tap More options (the three-dot menu), then tap Reset S Pen.
A reset returns customized remote-feature settings to their defaults. If the connection still fails, restart the phone and test again. Samsung’s Ireland support guide advises resetting and reconnecting when the S Pen has connection problems or disconnects often; a reset is not a guarantee against hardware failure.

Check compatibility before testing another pen
Not every S Pen that can write on the S22 Ultra can use its Air actions. Samsung’s device-specific compatibility guide gives these distinctions:

Cross-test the pen to decide whether it needs service
If the basic checks and reset do not help, compare like-for-like functions using another compatible device or pen. Test your S Pen on another compatible device if one is available, or try another compatible S Pen with the S22 Ultra. A writing-only pen is not a valid test of whether the phone’s Air actions work.

If the original pen fails on another compatible device, or another compatible pen also fails with the S22 Ultra after troubleshooting, contact Samsung about service. If the original pen appears to be faulty, check the exact model before buying a Galaxy S22 Ultra S Pen replacement; another S Pen may offer writing but not the remote features you need.
