Its usage is shared with Claude on the web and Claude Desktop, and depends on factors such as conversation length, features, model, and effort level. Paid plans also have rolling five-hour and weekly limits. Check Settings > Usage for your account’s current progress and reset information.
What counts toward Claude Code usage limits?
If Claude Code is signed in through an eligible Claude subscription or seat, its use draws on that plan’s allowance. The allowance is shared across Claude Code, Claude Desktop, and Claude on the web, so activity in those products can affect the same usage limits. Anthropic says consumption varies with conversation length and complexity, features used, model, and effort level; it does not publish a stable universal message or token count for all plans. Anthropic’s usage guidance describes these factors.

That means a long coding task with substantial project context or tool activity may use more of the shared allowance than a short, focused exchange. The exact impact depends on the task and account; no fixed per-prompt cost or guaranteed message count follows from the published guidance.

Subscription access and API-key access are metered differently
With subscription authentication, Claude Code uses the eligible plan’s shared allowance. With an API key, usage is pay-as-you-go and billed to the associated Anthropic Console account or configured cloud provider. Anthropic’s Claude Code cost guide describes using /cost to view running session spend for API-key usage. Subscription limits and API charges are separate: monitor the subscription in Claude’s usage settings and API spending through the billing account.

When do Claude Code limits reset?
Anthropic describes paid-plan limits as rolling five-hour session limits alongside weekly limits. The five-hour allowance resets five hours after it is reached. The weekly allowance has its own schedule, so do not assume that it resets when the five-hour window does. For your account’s progress and reset details, open Settings > Usage. Anthropic’s usage-limits help page and pricing page provide plan-level context; the account display is the practical source for current status.
Anthropic may offer eligible accounts an optional limit reset. The offer can restore either the five-hour or weekly limit immediately, is irreversible once used, and may have a displayed expiration date and time. If available, find it in the Resets section of Settings > Usage on the web or in Claude Desktop. Anthropic says the reset button is not currently available in Claude Code’s terminal or IDE, or in Claude Mobile. This is an optional offer, not the standard recurring reset. Details are in Anthropic’s limit-reset instructions.
Because limits and offers can change, avoid relying on a specific message count, token quota, or universal weekly reset day. Anthropic may also apply limits by model or feature; consult the usage page for the account-specific status.
How do I stop hitting my Claude Code limit?
These steps can reduce avoidable context and help you see usage sooner, but they cannot guarantee that a session will stay within changing account limits.
Rank #3
- Check your allowance before a long session. In Claude, open Settings > Usage and review the five-hour and weekly progress indicators. Use the displayed reset information to plan work.
- Start unrelated tasks with
/clear. This starts fresh by removing the current conversation history, rather than carrying irrelevant discussion into another task. Project files andCLAUDE.mdremain available. Use it when the next task does not depend on the current conversation. - Continue the same task with
/compact. This summarizes the conversation to free context while retaining a recap. Claude Code can also compact automatically near context limits. These commands manage conversation context; they do not reset subscription usage limits. See the Claude Code interactive-mode documentation. - Make prompts focused and provide relevant code together. Ask for the specific help needed and include the pertinent snippets in one clear request where practical. This can avoid extending a thread with fragmented context. Anthropic’s usage-limit best practices offer further guidance.
- Choose model and effort level with the task in mind. Anthropic identifies both as usage factors. Use
/modelto view or change the model available to your account; do not expect a particular percentage or message saving from a change. - For API-key sessions, monitor spend separately. Use
/costfor running session spend and review the billing or spend controls for the account paying the API charges.
Why clearing context does not reset your allowance
Claude Code’s context window and a plan’s usage allowance are different constraints. /clear removes the conversation history to begin a fresh task; /compact condenses a long conversation so work can continue with less context. Neither command restores a five-hour or weekly subscription allowance. For limit progress and reset timing, use Settings > Usage.
