A Samsung Galaxy that will not turn on may have a drained battery, a charging problem, frozen software, or physical damage. Start with a known-good charger and cable, then try a force restart. A black screen alone does not prove the phone is permanently dead; if it stays unresponsive or has been exposed to liquid or impact, stop troubleshooting and arrange professional inspection.
Why a Samsung phone may not turn on
Several problems can produce the same blank screen, so check the simplest and safest possibilities before assuming the phone needs replacement.

- Deeply discharged battery: A phone with a fully drained battery may take time to show a charging icon or percentage.
- Charging equipment or outlet: A faulty or incompatible charger or cable, a dead outlet, or a damaged, dirty, loose, bent, or corroded charging port can prevent charging.
- Frozen software or system problem: A force restart may recover a temporary software freeze. It will not fix physical damage.
- App-related boot loop: If the phone starts but repeatedly restarts or fails to complete startup, a downloaded app could be involved.
- Display or other hardware damage: A damaged screen can look like a dead phone. Cracks, impact, liquid exposure, or connector damage warrant professional inspection.
Samsung’s troubleshooting steps and button timing can vary by model, software version, and region. Follow instructions for your exact Galaxy model where possible.
What to check before charging
Remove a case if it could obstruct the buttons, then inspect the phone, charger, cable, buttons, and charging port for visible damage, moisture, corrosion, or looseness. Do not insert sharp objects into the port or attempt an invasive repair.

If the phone is wet, do not connect a charger or other accessories until it is fully dry. Samsung warns against using external heat, compressed air, chemicals, or abrasive materials to dry or clean the device. See Samsung Gulf’s guidance for a black or blank display.
Try a known-good charger and cable
- Connect an undamaged charger and cable compatible with your Galaxy to a working wall outlet. Samsung recommends approved or compatible charging equipment.
- Leave the phone connected even if the screen remains blank at first. A deeply discharged battery may not show an indicator immediately. Samsung Canada suggests waiting 15–20 minutes before trying a force restart; Samsung Gulf notes charging can take several hours depending on charger wattage. These are regional guidance points, not guaranteed charging times for every model.
- If there is no charging response, try another known-good compatible charger and cable, and check the outlet. A missing indicator can mean the first charger or cable is not supplying power.
Samsung’s instructions are available in its Canada battery guidance and India troubleshooting guide.
Force-restart the Galaxy
With the phone connected to power if it is safe to charge, press and hold the Side/Power button and Volume Down button together until the Samsung logo appears or the phone restarts. Keep holding if nothing happens immediately. Samsung’s published timing differs across regional pages and models: some say at least 7 seconds, Canada notes 10 seconds or longer, and one Gulf guide allows up to 60 seconds. These are not one universal timer; consult the instructions for your model.

If it turns on but keeps restarting
If the phone reaches a usable screen but repeatedly loops or fails again, Safe mode can help test whether a downloaded app is involved. Samsung says that if the issue stops in Safe mode, a downloaded app may be responsible; remove recently installed apps one at a time and check whether the problem returns. If the fault continues in Safe mode, seek service. The exact Safe mode steps and software-update menus depend on the model and One UI version, so use Samsung’s instructions for your device.
When to stop and get professional help
Contact Samsung support or a service center if the phone remains unresponsive after trying another compatible charger and cable and a force restart, if the charging port is bent, corroded, or loose, or if there has been impact or liquid exposure. Professional inspection is also appropriate when the problem persists in Safe mode. Samsung’s guidance does not establish that replacement is preferable to repair; that depends on inspection and the device’s condition.
Do not make a factory reset the first fix
A factory reset removes personal data and content. Samsung treats it as a last resort and warns information may not be recoverable. Consider it only if the phone can be accessed, other troubleshooting has failed, and important data is backed up.
