Claude API errors become much easier to fix when you classify the response before changing code. A 401 is an authentication problem, 403 is an access or permission problem, and 429 means a rate, usage-tier, or workspace spend limit was reached. A 413 is an oversized request, 504 is a processing timeout, and 529 means the service is temporarily overloaded. Read the JSON error and response headers, then apply the fix for that class instead of repeatedly retrying every failure.
This guide covers API keys, workspace identity, direct HTTP and SDK configuration, retry timing, rate-limit telemetry, spend caps, payload limits, timeouts, and cloud deployments.

Start with the status code and error body
Every failed request should be classified from its HTTP status and JSON response before you alter credentials, prompts, or retry logic. Anthropic error responses include an error.type, an explanatory error.message, and a request_id. Official SDKs expose the same categories as typed exceptions.
| Status | Error type | What it means | First action |
|---|---|---|---|
| 401 | authentication_error |
The API could not authenticate the supplied key or credentials. | Verify the key, endpoint, header, expiration, and cloud signing credentials. |
| 403 | permission_error |
The authenticated identity is not allowed to use the requested resource. | Check organization membership, workspace access, key type, and endpoint scope. |
| 429 | rate_limit_error |
A rate, token, monthly spend, or workspace limit was exceeded. | Inspect the message and rate-limit headers; honor retry-after when present. |
| 413 | request_too_large |
The body exceeds the limit for that API. | Reduce or split the payload. |
| 504 | timeout_error |
Processing did not complete within the service timeout. | Use streaming for long Messages calls and review request complexity. |
| 529 | overloaded_error |
The service is temporarily overloaded. | Retry with exponential backoff and observe the server’s timing. |
Do not treat all non-200 responses as interchangeable. For example, changing a key will not resolve a 429, and adding retries will not grant permission to a workspace that returned 403.

Fixing 401 authentication errors
A 401 means the request did not establish a valid Anthropic identity. Common causes are an expired or revoked key, a malformed value, a missing header, a key sent to the wrong endpoint, or missing cloud credentials when using a partner deployment.
Create or rotate the key safely
- Open Claude Console and create a key for the organization and workspace that will run the application.
- Store it in a secrets manager or an environment variable, not in source control, a browser bundle, a mobile app, or a log file.
- If the key may have been exposed, revoke it and create a replacement. Updating the secret alone does not make the old key valid again.
- Set the SDK environment variable exactly as
ANTHROPIC_API_KEY. Restart the process or redeploy after changing the environment so the running process receives the new value.
After a key expires, requests made with it return a 401 authentication_error. Treat expiration as a credential lifecycle issue: record when keys were issued, rotate before their expiry policy, and ensure the deployment actually picked up the replacement.
Check the HTTP authorization header
Direct HTTP clients should send the key as a bearer token:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Authorization: Bearer <key>
The legacy x-api-key header remains supported, but do not send an empty value, include quotation marks around the key, or accidentally pass the name of an environment variable instead of its value. Confirm that a proxy, API gateway, or browser CORS layer is not stripping the authorization header.
Verify the endpoint and cloud credentials
A key issued for the direct Anthropic API cannot automatically authenticate a request sent to an unrelated cloud endpoint. Confirm the base URL, deployment configuration, and region match the credentials you created. For an AWS deployment, validate AWS credentials and AWS Signature Version 4 (SigV4) signing in addition to the Anthropic identity. A valid Anthropic key does not replace the AWS authorization required by that route.

Use a minimal diagnostic request
Before debugging a large application, send one small request from the same runtime that will make production calls. Print only the status, sanitized error type, message, and request ID; never print the key. If the minimal request returns 401, the issue is credentials or endpoint selection rather than prompt size, concurrency, or model output.
When the key works in one workspace but not another
Anthropic keys are identity-backed. Personal keys and service-account keys inherit the organization and workspace access assigned to that identity. A key scoped to one workspace cannot be used in a different workspace merely because both belong to the same organization.

- Confirm which user or service account created the key.
- Verify that identity is still a member of the organization.
- Verify access to the target workspace, including any changes made after the key was issued.
- Confirm the requested model or endpoint is enabled for that workspace.
- Make sure staging and production are not loading secrets from different workspaces.
For a key that can operate across multiple workspaces, include the anthropic-workspace-id header on every request. Omitting that header produces a documented 400 invalid-request response, not a 401. A 400 in this situation means the key is potentially valid but the request did not identify the workspace required for a multi-workspace credential.
Keep workspace selection explicit
Store the workspace ID alongside the secret in the deployment configuration and attach both deliberately. Do not infer workspace selection from a developer’s Console session or from whichever project is open in a browser. In a multi-tenant service, map each customer or environment to an approved workspace and reject an unknown mapping before making an API call.
Understanding and resolving 403 forbidden responses
A 403 permission_error means Anthropic recognized the identity but that identity is not permitted to use the requested resource. Retrying the same request will continue to fail until access configuration changes.

Permission checklist
- Confirm the key belongs to the organization that owns the target workspace.
- Check that the user or service account is a member of that organization.
- Check workspace membership separately; organization membership alone may not grant workspace access.
- Confirm you are using the appropriate key type for the endpoint, rather than a key intended for another product or integration.
- Review endpoint and model scope, including any restrictions configured by an administrator.
- For AWS or Google Cloud deployments, verify the cloud identity has permission for the selected project, account, region, and model route.
Capture the response’s request ID when contacting an administrator or Anthropic support. It lets them locate the failed authorization decision without exposing your secret.
Why Claude returns 429 rate-limit errors
A 429 is not one single quota. Anthropic measures three traffic dimensions: requests per minute (RPM), input tokens per minute (ITPM), and output tokens per minute (OTPM). A workload can stay below RPM while exceeding ITPM with large prompts, or stay below ITPM while exceeding OTPM when many generations are long.
The error message identifies the limit that was exceeded when that information is available. A 429 can also indicate a usage-tier monthly spend cap or a Claude Code workspace spend limit. Those cases may not clear after a short pause because the account is blocked by billing or workspace policy rather than a momentary burst.
Inspect the Console before changing concurrency
Use the Usage and Rate limits pages in Claude Console to see current headroom and determine whether requests, input tokens, output tokens, or a workspace limiter is binding. Compare the time of the 429 with your traffic metrics. A sudden increase can trigger acceleration limits even when your normal average is lower, so a newly launched worker pool may fail while a small test succeeds.
Reduce the dimension that is actually full
- RPM exceeded: queue requests, limit concurrent workers, and smooth bursts.
- ITPM exceeded: trim repeated context, summarize history, reduce retrieved documents, or distribute large jobs over time.
- OTPM exceeded: set an appropriate output-token ceiling, request shorter answers, or schedule generations rather than running them all at once.
- Spend cap exceeded: review billing and the usage tier; retries will not bypass a monthly cap.
- Workspace spend limit exceeded: ask the workspace administrator to review or raise the limit.
Retrying safely: use server timing, not a tight loop
If the response includes a retry-after header, wait at least that many seconds before attempting the request again. Retrying earlier can produce another 429 and amplify the burst that caused the limit.

Anthropic’s official SDK automatically retries transient failures such as connection errors, rate limits, and 5xx server errors with exponential backoff, twice by default, honoring retry-after when present. The SDK’s max_retries setting controls this behavior. Set it deliberately for your workload: increasing it can improve resilience to a short outage but increases latency and duplicate-work risk.
Use bounded exponential backoff in custom clients
- Retry only errors that are transient for your operation: 429, 529, and eligible 5xx or connection failures.
- Honor
retry-afterwhen present rather than calculating a shorter delay. - If it is absent, use exponential delays with random jitter and a maximum attempt count.
- Stop immediately for 401, 403, malformed 400 requests, and a persistent spend-cap 429.
- Make the operation idempotent at your application layer so a delayed retry cannot create duplicate side effects.
A spend-cap 429 may omit retry-after and continue failing until access resumes. Your client should surface that state to an operator instead of retrying indefinitely.
Headers and telemetry that reveal the bottleneck
Log these fields for every request, while redacting credentials and personal data:
request-idfrom the response header andrequest_idfrom the JSON error body.anthropic-ratelimit-*-remainingheaders, which indicate remaining headroom for the relevant limit.- Rate-limit reset headers, so a queue can schedule work near the server’s reset time.
- HTTP status, error type, elapsed time, model, workspace identifier, input-token estimate, and requested output-token ceiling.
- Retry count and the actual delay used.
Correlate the request ID with your application trace, but do not put the API key, complete prompt, or generated personal data in ordinary logs. Alert on sustained headroom exhaustion, repeated 403 responses, and spend-cap messages separately; they require different owners and remedies.
Increasing capacity without creating acceleration failures
When sustained demand is legitimate, request a higher usage tier or monthly spend cap in Claude Console. Do this after measuring RPM, ITPM, OTPM, latency, and spend so the requested capacity reflects a real workload. A higher ceiling does not make an uncontrolled burst safe.
Best Value
Anthropic warns that a sharp usage increase can trigger acceleration limits. Ramp traffic gradually, keep worker counts stable while observing headers, and use a queue to smooth scheduled jobs. Warm up a new deployment with low concurrency, then increase it in measured steps. Keep separate budgets for interactive traffic and batch work so a batch spike cannot consume the capacity needed for user-facing requests.
413 request-too-large errors and payload limits
A 413 is a size failure, not a rate-limit failure. Current documented maximum request sizes are:
| API | Maximum request size | Practical response |
|---|---|---|
| Messages | 32 MB | Trim context, split the work, or send smaller files. |
| Token Counting | 32 MB | Count smaller sections and aggregate results in your application. |
| Batch | 256 MB | Partition the batch into multiple requests. |
| Files | 500 MB | Upload smaller files or process them in separate units. |
Measure the encoded HTTP body, not just the character count of the prompt. JSON escaping, document wrappers, and base64 data can add substantial bytes. Keep a margin below the published maximum so retries, metadata, or serialization changes do not push a request over the boundary.
Split content without losing task context
- Separate system instructions, shared context, and the document or records being processed.
- Chunk the large content at semantic boundaries such as chapters, records, or sections.
- Process chunks independently when possible, then run a smaller synthesis request over the results.
- For a long conversation, summarize older turns and retain only the details required for the next decision.
504 timeouts and long-running Messages calls
A 504 timeout_error indicates that processing did not finish within the service timeout. It is distinct from a 429: adding capacity or waiting for a rate reset does not shorten a request that is inherently too large or slow.
Streaming the Messages API is one documented option for long-running calls. Streaming lets your client receive output incrementally and display progress while generation continues. It does not remove payload limits or guarantee completion, so retain a bounded client timeout and handle interrupted streams.
To reduce timeout risk, lower unnecessary context, constrain the requested output, split multi-stage work, and avoid sending many independent expensive operations in one synchronous request. If a timeout is intermittent, record the model, input size, output ceiling, elapsed time, and request ID before changing the workload.
A production troubleshooting procedure
- Capture the failure: record status, error type, message, request ID, response headers, endpoint, workspace, model, and elapsed time.
- Classify it: choose authentication, permission, rate or spend limit, payload size, timeout, or overload.
- Validate identity: for 401, check key value, expiration, revocation, header, endpoint, and cloud signing.
- Validate scope: for 403 or a multi-workspace 400, check organization, workspace, key type, endpoint scope, and the workspace header.
- Validate capacity: for 429, inspect RPM, ITPM, OTPM, Console usage, spend caps, and reset headers.
- Apply bounded recovery: honor
retry-after; otherwise use jittered exponential backoff only for transient failures. - Change the workload: smooth bursts, reduce tokens, split oversized requests, or stream long Messages calls.
- Escalate with evidence: provide request IDs, timestamps, workspace, and sanitized error details to the workspace administrator or Anthropic support.
Choosing the right fix by deployment
| Deployment | Identity to verify | Additional checks |
|---|---|---|
| Direct Anthropic API | Anthropic API key and workspace identity | Authorization: Bearer or supported x-api-key, workspace header for multi-workspace keys, Console limits. |
| AWS | Anthropic configuration plus AWS credentials | SigV4 signing, account, region, IAM permission, and the selected cloud endpoint. |
| Google Cloud | Cloud project identity plus Anthropic access configuration | Project, region, service account permissions, endpoint, and applicable quotas. |
Keep cloud-specific failures separate from Anthropic API failures in your monitoring. A rejected cloud signature, an Anthropic 401, and a workspace 403 can look similar to an application that logs only “request failed,” but each has a different owner and remedy.

Quick Recap
What not to do
- Do not paste a production key into source code or commit it to a repository.
- Do not retry 401 or 403 responses on a timer.
- Do not ignore
retry-afterand immediately fan out more workers. - Do not assume every 429 is fixed by requesting a higher tier; spend caps and workspace limits may be the cause.
- Do not hide request IDs or rate-limit headers from logs; they are the fastest way to identify the failing dimension.
- Do not increase payload size to “use the model better” when a 413 or 504 shows the request is already too large.
