Claude can reduce repetitive work in KiCad when connected through the KiCAD-MCP-Server, but it does not remove the need to understand electronics or verify the board. In a personal account published by MakeUseOf on August 21, 2026, the author describes using Claude to edit a schematic, arrange components, route traces, set rules, and run design checks. Those examples show a potentially useful workflow—not proof that an AI-generated PCB is electrically sound or ready to manufacture.
How Claude works with KiCad
Claude does not replace KiCad or independently design a circuit from a plain-language description. In the described setup, an MCP server connects Claude to KiCad so it can issue actions in the electronic design automation (EDA) application. The project README describes KiCAD-MCP-Server as an MCP implementation for KiCad, with capabilities including schematic editing, component placement, routing, design-rule and electrical-rule checks, and export. See the KiCAD-MCP-Server project README for its current setup and capabilities.

The README lists KiCad 9.0 or newer, Node.js 18 or newer, and Python 3.11 or newer as requirements, and recommends cloning the stable branch for the latest release. These are live project details and may change; check the README for the current instructions before installing. The described article does not establish that every capability works equally well across versions or projects.
What the reported workflow accomplished
The MakeUseOf author reported asking Claude to create a project and a simple schematic containing a 10 kΩ resistor and a 0.1 µF capacitor, then connect their pins. The account also describes requesting a 100 mm × 80 mm board outline with rounded corners, mounting holes and labels, and arranging eight LEDs in a four-by-two grid.

For the PCB layout, the author says Claude assigned a net class, routed traces, created copper pours, set clearance and track-width rules, and ran DRC. These are examples from one person’s account, not results from a controlled evaluation. They suggest where an assistant may reduce the friction of repetitive editor operations and geometry work; they do not establish that it can choose an appropriate circuit or produce a correct board without oversight.
Where AI assistance is most useful
The strongest case is delegating discrete, inspectable operations inside a project you understand. For instance, component arrangement, labels, board outlines, and repetitive routing actions can be easier to specify once you know the intended geometry, connections, and rules. The human role remains central: define the electrical design, express constraints, inspect each change, and decide whether the result is acceptable.

- 32 Boards In Five Sizes: Choose 4 × 6 cm, 3 × 7 cm, 5 × 7 cm, 2 × 8 cm or 7 × 9 cm boards for compact circuits, controller interfaces, classroom soldering exercises and larger point-to-point builds
- Double-Sided FR4 For Soldered Prototypes: Approximately 1.6 mm FR4 provides a rigid base for permanent electronics builds, while pre-tinned plated-through holes provide solderable connections accessible from both sides
- Standard 2.54 mm Grid Fits Common Through-Hole Parts: Lay out resistors, LEDs, DIP sockets, pin headers, terminal blocks, sensors and jumper wires on a 0.1 in pitch, then create each required connection with soldered leads, bridges or insulated wire
- From Breadboard Test To Permanent Build: Transfer a proven circuit into a compact soldered assembly for sensor nodes, controllers, alarms and STEM demonstrations; corner mounting holes help secure finished boards in enclosures or on panels
- Set Expectations Before Soldering: These are isolated-pad perfboards with no breadboard-style buses or stripboard traces, and the kit does not include components, wire, solder or tools; plan the layout and check continuity before applying power
This is not a simple choice between AI and manual design. Consider what you are delegating and whether you can verify it:
- Repetitive editor work: potentially convenient to delegate when the requested changes are bounded and easy to inspect.
- Electrical decisions: retain responsibility for circuit behavior, component selection, pin assignments, and power connections.
- KiCad knowledge: useful for both describing the intended result and recognizing an incorrect one.
- Project handling: check changes in the actual project and confirm they match the KiCad version and project settings you use.
- Manufacturing preparation: validate design rules and outputs against the particular fabricator’s requirements.
Why a human still has to review the board
The author reports that Claude sometimes chose the wrong footprint, that describing a design can be difficult without KiCad’s technical vocabulary, and that manual cleanup was expected. The author would not trust an AI-generated board for manufacture without checking it. These are practical limitations: a design can look orderly while using a footprint or connection that does not match the real component.

KiCad’s Design Rules Checker (DRC) checks the board against requirements configured in Board Setup and checks whether pads are connected as expected. When enabled, schematic parity can also be checked. KiCad notes that some violations cannot be prevented automatically and recommends running DRC before generating manufacturing outputs. DRC therefore checks specified project rules; it does not independently prove that a circuit functions, that a footprint matches a particular part, or that a board is suitable for a chosen fabricator. See the KiCad 10.0 Getting Started documentation.
A practical review checklist
- Match each footprint’s dimensions and pin numbering to the exact manufacturer part number and its datasheet.
- Inspect net assignments and power connections rather than assuming that generated connections are correct.
- Confirm board dimensions, mounting holes, clearances, and other constraints against the intended enclosure and fabricator.
- Refresh copper zones, run DRC, and enable schematic-parity checking where applicable.
- Inspect the generated Gerber and drill files before sending them for fabrication.
What KiCad’s manufacturing exports do—and do not—mean
KiCad identifies Gerber as its primary PCB manufacturing plot format and supports exporting manufacturing and drill files. Exporting these files produces fabrication outputs; it does not certify that their settings suit a particular manufacturer or that the underlying design is correct. Check the output configuration and compare the files and board constraints with the fabricator’s requirements. The KiCad command-line documentation covers manufacturing-output workflows; details can vary by KiCad version.
