Classic Sci-Fi Games Like System Shock: What to Play Next

Pick your next sci-fi game by what you want from System Shock: a hostile starship, a modernized station exploration, or a galaxy-spanning story.

If you mean System Shock, the best next game depends on which part you want more of: choose System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster for another hostile spacecraft and classic first-person RPG feel, the System Shock remake to revisit Citadel Station with modernized presentation, or Mass Effect Legendary Edition for a character-driven space saga with decisions carried across three games. The phrase “this one” can refer to different games, so these picks are organized by play style rather than ranked as universal matches.

Choose by the kind of sci-fi experience you want

If you want… Play… Why it fits
Classic first-person exploration and survival aboard a hostile starship System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster It is the most direct fit here for a classic FPS/RPG atmosphere in a spacecraft setting.
The original System Shock design with contemporary presentation System Shock (remake) It revisits Citadel Station with exploration, hacking, audio logs, nonlinear levels, and multiple ways to solve problems.
A sweeping, character-led story with choices across installments Mass Effect Legendary Edition It bundles three remastered games whose decisions carry forward, but it is a cinematic squad RPG rather than a first-person immersive sim.

For another classic FPS/RPG aboard a spacecraft: System Shock 2

System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster is the clearest follow-up if the appeal is first-person sci-fi tension, exploration, and RPG systems inside a dangerous ship. Atari describes the setting as the Von Braun starship and the remaster as an updated presentation of the original game, which it identifies as a 1999 PC release. Its product listing also describes cross-play co-op for up to four players and physical editions for Switch and PS5. Atari’s product page is the place to confirm the platform and edition; storefront details and inventory can change.

To revisit the original design: System Shock remake

The remake is the natural choice if you want the original game’s station-bound exploration and problem-solving, but with contemporary presentation. Atari describes it as a modernized remake of the 1994 game, built around exploration, audio logs, nonlinear levels, and multiple approaches to problems. PlayStation’s feature highlights hacking, exploration of Citadel Station, and the game’s retro-future design. The original System Shock launched on PC in 1994, and PlayStation describes the contemporary release as a full remake of that foundational title. Atari’s remake overview and PlayStation’s feature provide the official descriptions.

For a galaxy-spanning story: Mass Effect Legendary Edition

Choose Mass Effect Legendary Edition if what you want is a sustained science-fiction story shaped by companions and decisions, rather than first-person exploration of one hostile location. EA says the edition includes the single-player base content and more than 40 DLC from Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2, and Mass Effect 3, remastered and optimized for 4K Ultra HD. Choices carry from one game to the next. That makes it a strong narrative/RPG alternative, but not a close match for the immersive-sim mechanics of System Shock. EA’s edition page lists its contents and features.

Why System Shock remains a useful starting point

The original’s influence helps explain why recommendations can point in different directions: players may be looking for its first-person systems, oppressive sci-fi setting, or the sense that decisions shape how they handle the world. On PlayStation’s developer feature, Nightdive Studios CEO Stephen Kick describes System Shock as pioneering the immersive-sim genre, combining elements from multiple genres and giving players flexibility to interact with the game world. PlayStation’s feature also includes perspectives from developers on the game’s audio logs, tools, and systems-driven approach.

That history does not make every influential sci-fi game a close substitute. Use the mechanics and mood you want—first-person exploration and hacking, flexible problem-solving, survival-horror tension, or cinematic squad storytelling—as the deciding factor.
