Apple Home is a natural fit for Apple households; Google Home and Amazon Alexa suit homes already using those ecosystems; and Home Assistant is the strongest option here for people who want a highly configurable system running on their own hardware. Matter can make compatible devices available in multiple apps, but it does not guarantee that every platform supports every device feature or automation.
Which SmartThings alternative fits your home?
| Platform | Likely fit | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Home | Homes centered on iPhone, iPad, Mac, Siri, HomePod, or Apple TV. | Confirm the accessory supports Apple Home or Matter and exposes the features you use. Apple identifies HomePod, HomePod mini, and Apple TV as home hubs for remote access and automations. Apple Home |
| Google Home | Homes using Google Home, Nest, or Google voice control. | Check the exact device category, hub model, IPv6 configuration, and Thread coverage. Google says Matter setup requires a Matter-enabled hub, and Thread accessories require a Thread border router. Google’s Matter setup requirements |
| Amazon Alexa | Homes built around Echo, Alexa, and compatible devices. | Verify the exact Echo or eero model and the device’s Matter transport and functions; the Alexa brand alone does not establish compatibility. TP-Link’s cross-platform examples were collected in March 2026, so check current manufacturer specifications. TP-Link’s Matter compatibility guide |
| Home Assistant | People seeking local control, broad integrations, or detailed automations who are willing to configure and maintain a system. | Check the integration for each device, select hardware and any needed radio adapters, and decide whether optional cloud access is useful. Local-protocol devices and automations can continue during an internet outage, but cloud-only devices and some integrations still need connectivity. Home Assistant FAQ |

What Matter changes—and what it does not
Matter lets compatible devices be shared among Matter-certified apps, a capability commonly called multi-admin. That can make it easier to control one accessory through more than one ecosystem. It does not promise identical features, device-category support, or automations across those platforms; support changes over time. Check the exact model and the specific functions you rely on in the destination platform’s current compatibility information. Home Assistant’s Matter overview describes Matter as an application-layer protocol: it uses IPv6 over a network such as Wi-Fi or Ethernet, or over Thread. It does not replace Zigbee, Z-Wave, or Bluetooth.
A hub or border router may still be required. Google says a Matter-enabled hub is needed to set up Matter devices and enable remote control. Google’s instructions also require IPv6 on the home Wi-Fi network; Thread accessories need a Thread border router. For remote commands, Google documents a path through its cloud to the home hub, which then communicates with the accessory on the local network. Google Matter setup and Google’s Matter control guidance give the platform-specific details.

What to consider before moving from SmartThings
Apple Home
If most household members use Apple devices, Apple Home is a straightforward shortlist candidate. The Home app controls compatible accessories, while a HomePod, HomePod mini, or Apple TV can serve as a home hub for remote access and automations. Check whether each accessory supports Apple Home directly or through Matter, and whether the features you use are exposed in the Home app. Apple Home
Google Home
Google Home offers app, voice, home-panel, and automation control for supported devices. For Matter accessories, confirm the hub and network prerequisites, including IPv6 and, for Thread devices, a Thread border router. Consult Google’s current device support information rather than assuming that support for one Matter category means support for another. Google’s setup instructions

- Monitor and control compatible devices in your home using a single smartphone app for your phone
- Automate connected devices in your home and set them to turn on or off when doors are opened, people come and go, and much more

Amazon Alexa
Alexa is worth considering when Echo devices and Alexa routines are already central to the home. Matter support depends on the particular hub and device combination. TP-Link’s guide lists examples for several platforms but says its table reflects information gathered in March 2026; use it as a starting point and confirm the exact model and capabilities with current manufacturer documentation. Home Assistant
Home Assistant is the strongest match among these choices for people who want extensive configuration and a system hosted on hardware they control. It supports many integrations and can expose devices to Apple Home, Google Home, and Alexa. It can also coexist with those platforms and SmartThings, making a gradual transition possible. Local-protocol devices and automations can work through an internet outage, but cloud-dependent devices and selected integrations cannot. Home Assistant FAQ

Home Assistant hardware: what you may need
Home Assistant software is free and open source. It can run on Home Assistant Green, a suitable Raspberry Pi, mini PC, NUC, or virtual machine; hardware is not included with the software, and Home Assistant Cloud is optional. Cloud features include remote access and integrations with Apple Home, Google Home, and Alexa. Home Assistant FAQ
Home Assistant Green is the dedicated plug-and-play option. Home Assistant’s product page lists a recommended MSRP of $199 USD before tax and identifies the model as NC-GREEN-1175; the page was accessed October 4, 2026. Green can control Matter devices over Wi-Fi or Ethernet after the Matter integration and server are set up. Thread-based Matter devices need a Thread border router. The page describes Connect ZBT-2 as an optional Zigbee or Thread radio and notes that Thread support was under development on the page reviewed, so verify current support and device compatibility before buying. Quick Recap
How to switch without losing track of devices
- Inventory the installation. For every device, write down its exact model, connection type (such as Matter over Wi-Fi or Thread, Zigbee, Z-Wave, Bluetooth, or vendor cloud), current hub, and the automations or functions you depend on.
- Check the destination platform device by device. Use current official compatibility information to confirm both the accessory and the particular features you need. There is no single comprehensive current matrix establishing that every SmartThings device and feature transfers unchanged.
- Identify missing hardware and network prerequisites. Confirm whether the new setup needs a hub, Thread border router, radio adapter, IPv6 configuration, or internet access for cloud-based devices and integrations.
- Test a small group before migrating routines. Where possible, add a few representative devices and recreate the automations that matter most. Matter multi-admin can allow compatible devices to be shared with another app; Home Assistant also supports coexistence with SmartThings and the other platforms covered here. TP-Link’s Matter guide and the Home Assistant FAQ explain these options.
- Move the rest only after checking coverage. Retain the existing setup while validating device control, automations, and remote access in the new platform, then retire it when the replacement meets your needs.
