Buy games individually if you have a short, known list and want access that does not depend on a title staying in the catalog. Compare the price of the specific games you plan to play with the cost of the relevant plan over the same period—and include online multiplayer if you need it, since most paid PS4 and PS5 games require Plus for online play.
What you get with each option
PlayStation Plus is a recurring membership, not simply a lower-cost way to buy games. Its tiers bundle different benefits, and the games available through a catalog are not permanent purchases. Buying a game digitally gives your account a purchase license; it is not an unrestricted property right.

PlayStation Plus Essential
Essential includes monthly games, online multiplayer, discounts, cloud storage and Share Play, but it does not include the Extra and Premium Game Catalog. You can add the monthly games to your library and play them while your membership is active. If membership lapses, access to those subscription games is unavailable until you subscribe again. Sony lists the US plans and benefits; its support comparison describes the tier benefits.
Extra and Premium
Extra includes Essential benefits plus the Game Catalog. Premium adds the Classics Catalog, game trials and cloud streaming where available. Catalog access is temporary: Sony can publish removal dates for games, so check whether a title is included now and when it is scheduled to leave. Streaming availability also depends on region and technical conditions. Sony’s plan page and games page explain the offerings and current game availability.

Buying individually
Games purchased from PlayStation Store appear in the account’s Game Library. Their access is not contingent on continued Game Catalog inclusion, unlike games played through Extra or Premium. Sony’s troubleshooting guidance distinguishes purchased titles from catalog games, for which an active membership and continued availability are required: check the purchasing account and restore licenses.
Compare the current US plan prices
Sony’s US PlayStation Plus page displayed these recurring prices when checked on October 4, 2026. Prices are not a guarantee for other countries, existing subscribers, promotions or future renewals. At those displayed US annual prices, Extra costs $55 more per year than Essential, and Premium costs $25 more than Extra. These are differences calculated from Sony’s listed prices, not separate Sony-published statistics. If you already need Essential, the relevant question for the Game Catalog is often whether the Extra upgrade is worth its incremental cost—not whether Extra’s full price beats the price of games alone.

Sony says most PS4 and PS5 games require Plus for online multiplayer; some do not, and free-to-play games are an exception noted on Sony’s plan page. Sony’s wording is that “For the majority of games that you have purchased on disc or downloaded from PlayStation Store, you need a PlayStation Plus membership plan to play online.” Check the particular game’s Store listing or requirements. Sony’s plan page describes the multiplayer requirement.

If you need a membership for online play, buying a game individually does not necessarily eliminate your subscription cost. Compare the individual game prices against the additional amount for a tier with catalog access, while counting Essential’s other benefits only to the extent you would actually use them.
Use a game-by-game decision method
- Make a list for the period you are considering. Name the games you expect to play over the next 12 months, or over a shorter subscription period if that is your real plan. Check whether each is currently in the Extra or Premium catalog and whether Sony lists a removal date. A title’s current presence does not guarantee it will remain for the full year.
- Price the same games individually. Add their current prices in your own Store region. Count discounts only if they are actually available to you now; if a title is often discounted, do not treat its undiscounted list price as a certain saving from subscribing.
- Choose the right comparison. Compare the game total with the plan cost for the same time window. If you already pay for Essential to play online, compare the catalog tier’s incremental cost with buying the games you would actually play. Avoid assuming a universal number of games at which Plus becomes cheaper: the result depends on the titles, prices, play time and catalog changes.
- Decide how much ongoing access matters. A subscription can suit a limited period of trying a variety of included games. Individual purchases can suit a small group of favorites, repeat play, or a preference not to depend on catalog inclusion. Digital purchases remain account-based licenses.
- Recheck just before paying. Plan prices, game discounts and catalog availability change. Confirm the current price, inclusion and any listed removal date in your local Store.
When Premium’s extra features matter
Premium is not automatically the better value just because it is the highest tier. Compare its $25 annual US price difference over Extra, as displayed on October 4, 2026, with the Classics Catalog, trials and cloud streaming you expect to use. If those features do not matter to you, they do not make the subscription a better games-only deal. Streaming is available only where Sony offers it and subject to technical conditions.
