If Windows 11 shows “Class not registered” when you open an image, start with the app and file-type settings—not the registry. The message alone does not identify a cause. Work through these checks in order, and stop as soon as images open normally. The first steps apply to a problem limited to Microsoft Photos or one image type; the later Windows repair options are for persistent or broader problems.
What the error does—and does not—tell you
“Class not registered” is an error message, not proof that the registry is damaged or that Microsoft Photos is corrupted. A Microsoft Q&A discussion reports the same wording and suggests app and Windows troubleshooting, but community replies do not diagnose the cause on your PC. The steps below separate an app problem from a file-association issue and a wider Windows problem.

Try these nine checks in order
1. Restart and try a known-good image
Restart Windows, then open an image you know has worked before. If possible, use a second image stored locally. This is a basic check, not a guaranteed fix; it can help distinguish a problem with one file from a repeated launch problem.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2. Update Photos if Photos is the affected app
If you use Microsoft Photos, open Microsoft Store, select Library, and check for app updates. A Microsoft Q&A response recommends updating Photos for this error, but that is community troubleshooting advice rather than an official, error-specific Microsoft remedy.

3. Repair Microsoft Photos
When only Photos fails, try its Windows repair option before resetting it. Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find Photos, select the More icon beside it, then choose Advanced options > Repair, if available. Microsoft notes that these controls are not available for every app. Repair is intended to address app problems without choosing the more disruptive Reset option.
4. Reset Photos if Repair did not help
Return to Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Photos > More > Advanced options and select Reset. Use this only after trying Repair. Reset applies to the app, not Windows as a whole; check the on-screen prompt before confirming.

5. Check the default app for the failing extension
If the error occurs with a particular image type, confirm which app Windows uses for that extension. Go to Settings > Apps > Default apps, search for the extension—for example, .jpg or .png—select the matching result, and choose an installed viewer. Microsoft also documents changing defaults from an app’s listing on the Default apps page. Labels can vary slightly between Windows 11 updates.
6. Compare another extension and another viewer
Try opening a different image type and, if one is installed, open the same image with another viewer. Note whether the failure follows Photos, one extension, or multiple apps and file types. This is a diagnostic comparison, not a separate repair: it helps you decide whether to continue with app settings or investigate a broader Windows issue.

7. Install pending Windows updates
Check Windows Update and install pending updates, then restart and retry. A Microsoft Q&A discussion recommends checking updates, but the available guidance does not establish that a particular Windows update fixes this error. Treat this as routine maintenance, not a guaranteed remedy.
8. Repair Windows system files if the problem is persistent or broader
If app-level steps have not helped—or other Windows functions are also failing—Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker. Open Command Prompt as an administrator. Run the first command and wait for it to finish; then run the second and allow that scan to complete:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealthsfc /scannow
DISM can supply files used for repair; SFC scans protected Windows system files and replaces corrupted files with cached copies when possible. These are general integrity tools, not a diagnosis or guaranteed fix for an image-opening error. Keep the Command Prompt window open until SFC reports completion.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →9. Consider Windows recovery only for a continuing wider problem
If the issue persists alongside broader Windows problems, first check whether the less disruptive reinstall option is available: Settings > System > Recovery > Fix problems using Windows Update. Microsoft says this reinstalls the current Windows version to repair system files and components while preserving apps, files, and settings. It requires an internet connection and power, and may not appear on every PC.
Reset this PC is a more disruptive alternative, not an early fix for one image app. Microsoft’s Keep my files option preserves personal files but removes apps and settings; Remove everything removes personal files, apps, and settings. Back up important files first and make sure you have your BitLocker recovery key if applicable.

- Only Photos fails: focus on updating, repairing, or resetting Photos.
- One extension fails: check its default app, then compare another extension or viewer.
- Several apps or Windows features fail: move on to system-file checks; consider recovery only if the wider issue remains.
For the official procedures, see Microsoft’s guidance on repairing apps in Windows, changing default apps, using DISM and System File Checker, reinstalling Windows through Windows Update, and resetting a PC.
