Minecraft may be using integrated graphics because a laptop with both integrated and discrete graphics can assign apps to either adapter to balance battery life and performance. That does not automatically mean the dedicated GPU is broken. For Java Edition, check the game’s actual graphics information, then set the Java executable that runs the game—not only the launcher—to High performance in Windows graphics settings and relaunch it.
Why Minecraft may choose integrated graphics
Hybrid laptops typically have a power-saving integrated GPU and a higher-performance discrete GPU. The system can use integrated graphics for less demanding tasks and reserve the discrete card for applications that need it. AMD describes Windows graphics preferences in these terms: Power saving uses integrated graphics and less power, while High performance selects the discrete GPU and consumes more power. AMD’s Windows 10 graphics-preference guide explains those choices.

For Minecraft Java Edition, another common source of confusion is the difference between the launcher and the process that renders the game. The launcher can start a separate Java runtime, so changing the launcher’s preference may not change the adapter used by the running game.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCheck which graphics path Minecraft is using
- Launch the world and press F3. Inspect the graphics or system information in the in-game debug display. Java Edition 26.2 release notes say the
system_specssection indicates which graphics backend is in use. Minecraft Java Edition 26.2 release notes - Identify the running game executable. In Java Edition, the renderer is commonly a Java runtime process rather than the launcher itself. The exact executable depends on the launcher, profile, and installation. A historical Mojang issue discusses adding
javaw.exeto Windows graphics settings and checking the F3 display; use it as a reminder to target the game process, not as proof of a current launcher defect. Mojang legacy issue MCL-17027
Do not rely on a launcher label or a Windows Task Manager GPU index alone as definitive proof of which adapter rendered Minecraft. Check the in-game display, then use the executable associated with that running instance when changing its preference.

Set Minecraft to High performance in Windows
AMD’s published instructions cover Windows 10; navigation and labels can vary by Windows version and graphics vendor. On Windows 10, the documented route is:
- Open Settings > System > Display, then select Graphics settings.
- Choose Desktop app, browse to the executable for the Minecraft game process, and add it. For Java Edition, this may be
javaw.exe; locate the one used by your current instance rather than copying an old path from a guide. - Select the added app and choose Options.
- Select High performance, then choose Save.
- Close and relaunch Minecraft. AMD says the preference applies the next time the application launches.
The available options may include Let Windows decide, Power saving, and High performance. Windows or a vendor’s interface may not expose identical controls on every computer. High performance can use more power, so a battery-powered laptop may run down faster.

Java Edition 26.2: Vulkan and OpenGL behavior
Graphics-backend behavior is version-specific. Minecraft’s Java Edition 26.2 release notes state that “Under Vulkan, we will prefer your dedicated graphics card over any integrated graphics, which is a change from OpenGL.” The notes also describe Vulkan support as experimental and warn it may reduce performance or cause instability on some systems.
In that release, the graphics API video setting offers Default, Prefer Vulkan (Experimental), and Prefer OpenGL. The notes say Default is currently the same as Prefer OpenGL and recommend Default unless you have an issue. These details apply to Java Edition 26.2; later releases may change the setting or behavior. Do not switch to an experimental backend solely on the assumption it will improve performance.

Does integrated graphics mean your computer is inadequate?
Not necessarily. Minecraft’s 2026 Java Edition requirements distinguish between minimum and recommended targets, and explicitly include integrated-graphics systems at minimum:
| Published target | Configuration or performance target |
|---|---|
| Minimum memory | 12 GB RAM with integrated graphics, or 8 GB RAM with a discrete GPU |
| Minimum processor and graphics | Four-core processor; Vulkan 1.3-capable graphics hardware with at least 2 GB VRAM |
| Minimum performance target | 1080p at 30 FPS on Fast settings |
| Recommended memory and graphics | 16 GB RAM and a graphics card with 6 GB VRAM |
| Recommended performance target | 1080p at 60 FPS on Fancy settings |
These are Minecraft’s published requirements and targets, not a prediction of the frame-rate gain from selecting a discrete GPU on a particular computer. Minecraft says performance and visual quality are not guaranteed below the new minimum; older devices may struggle or fail to launch as Java Edition transitions from OpenGL toward Vulkan. If the setting does not change the adapter
- Confirm that you added the executable used by the running game, not just the launcher. Modded profiles and third-party launchers may use a different Java runtime.
- Save the graphics preference and fully relaunch Minecraft; the Windows 10 instructions specify that the change takes effect on the next launch.
- Check F3 again in-game to see the graphics information after relaunching.
- If the system has no discrete GPU, or the game process is not being assigned to one, a High performance preference cannot create dedicated graphics capability. Check the computer’s hardware and available graphics controls before considering any purchase.
