Formerly called Runner Provisioner, it automatically adjusts self-hosted machine-runner capacity to match CI demand. The practical change for operators is that one deployment can now scale CPU, GPU, and ARM resource classes; preview users, however, must uninstall and reinstall to migrate to the renamed release, with configured runners offline during the transition.
What Machine Runner Orchestrator does
Machine Runner Orchestrator is a Kubernetes controller for CircleCI self-hosted machine runners. It polls CircleCI for pending and running tasks, then adjusts the replica count of a KubeVirt VirtualMachinePool to respond to that demand. In CircleCI’s description, the result is machine-runner virtual machines that scale with CI workload rather than requiring operators to adjust pool size manually. What changed with version 1.0.0 GA
CircleCI’s September 14, 2026 release note announces the former Runner Provisioner as Machine Runner Orchestrator and marks it generally available. The announcement’s notable operational expansion is support for scaling CPU, GPU, and ARM resource classes from one deployment. CircleCI names GKE, AKS, and EKS, as well as Kubernetes clusters based on KubeVirt.
The named platforms describe environments where the orchestrator can be used; they do not mean CircleCI supplies or manages your Kubernetes cluster. The published setup requirements call for a Kubernetes cluster with KubeVirt already installed. The orchestrator’s Helm chart does not install KubeVirt.

What teams need before adopting it
- Existing Kubernetes and KubeVirt: Your environment must already have both; the orchestrator chart is not a substitute for installing or operating them.
- Resource-class needs: The GA release is relevant if you want CPU, GPU, and/or ARM runner pools to scale through one deployment.
- Cluster fit: CircleCI explicitly names GKE, AKS, and EKS, alongside other KubeVirt-based Kubernetes clusters.
- Availability during migration: Preview users need a window in which the configured runners can be offline while they replace the installation.
CircleCI says the image and Helm chart are publicly available without registry credentials or an invitation. It also says the orchestrator is included with self-hosted runners on every CircleCI plan at no additional cost. That is CircleCI’s published pricing claim for the orchestrator, not a statement that the Kubernetes cluster or underlying compute infrastructure has no cost. Preview users must reinstall under the new names
Existing Runner Provisioner preview deployments cannot simply continue unchanged under the GA release. CircleCI says the chart, image repository, and Packagecloud repository names changed, so preview users must uninstall the existing deployment and reinstall it using the new names and instructions in the current documentation.

Plan for an interruption: runners for configured resource classes will be offline between uninstall and reinstall. Schedule the migration when that temporary loss of runner capacity is acceptable, and follow the current installation guide rather than carrying forward preview-era repository or chart references.
