The new San Martino di Castrozza–Passo Rolle cable car is under construction, but it has not opened. The latest schedule published by the Autonomous Province of Trento targets completion and commissioning in 2029. The planned 4.6-kilometre connection uses two integrated ten-seat gondola lifts and is expected to take 13 minutes from Bellaria to Passo Rolle without a cabin change.
What is being built?
The project comprises two integrated gondola lifts designed to connect Bellaria, near San Martino di Castrozza, with Passo Rolle. The route includes four main stations—Bellaria, Prà delle Nasse, Fosse di Sopra and Passo Rolle—and a technical stop at Sass Maor for skiers travelling downhill toward the Cimon learning area. The province describes the system as a continuous connection, so passengers travelling from Bellaria to Passo Rolle are expected to stay in the same cabin.

The latest provincial specifications describe a 4.6-kilometre route, ten seats per cabin and an initial capacity of 1,500 passengers per hour, expandable to 1,800. The province estimates the investment at approximately €55 million. These are published project specifications and estimates, not operating results. Autonomous Province of Trento, 21 July 2026.

When will the cable car open?
The latest official schedule located, in the province’s announcement of 21 July 2026, targets completion of works and commissioning in 2029. That is a target, not a confirmed opening date, and the lift should not be described as open.

Earlier official destination updates forecast a different timetable: the destination site reported December 2027 in February 2026 and winter 2027/28 in an update dated 5 November 2025. Those earlier dates have been superseded by the later provincial schedule for purposes of reporting the current target. Official San Martino destination update.
What route will it follow, and what will be at each station?
Bellaria to Prà delle Nasse
Bellaria–Prà delle Nasse is planned as the main interchange between private transport, public transport and the gondola system. Prà delle Nasse is intended to be the project’s service hub, with a two-level center planned to include ticketing, an information point, equipment rental, a ski school, shops and food service.

Prà delle Nasse to Fosse di Sopra
The route continues to Fosse di Sopra, where the project plans to locate its technical center. The province says the station there will be underground to reduce its landscape impact.

Sass Maor stop
Sass Maor is a technical downhill-only stop, intended for skiers heading toward the Cimon learning area. It is not described as a regular boarding stop for uphill travel.
Why do some older reports give a different route or travel time?
The project description has changed over time. A destination update published on 5 November 2025 described a 1,650-metre, five-station configuration, a 17-minute trip and completion in winter 2027/28. A February 2026 destination update still forecast December 2027. The later provincial announcement of 21 July 2026 instead specifies a 4.6-kilometre integrated route, a 13-minute journey and a 2029 commissioning target. These are different dated project descriptions; the older figures should not be blended with the later specifications as if they describe one current plan. Official San Martino destination update.

What changes are intended—and what is not yet established?
The province presents the connection as an alternative to road travel and a way to improve mobility and access in both winter and summer. Those are project aims, not evidence that traffic has already fallen or that environmental impacts have been measured. No independent traffic-reduction or environmental-outcome statistic is established in the cited project material.
For the route near the protected area at Prà delle Nasse, the province says the design uses a single 290-metre span over the area to avoid construction works inside the special conservation area. It also describes the Fosse di Sopra station as underground to limit landscape impact. These are design choices as reported by the project owner, not independent environmental-impact findings. Autonomous Province of Trento, 21 July 2026.

Who is building and coordinating the project?
The procurement was awarded in 2024 to a consortium led by Leitner S.p.A., with Collini Lavori S.p.A., Misconel S.r.l. and Grisenti S.r.l. The province says Trentino Sviluppo is coordinating the project and that the province is financing it through that company. Autonomous Province of Trento, 21 July 2026.
