Start with Chrono Trigger if this is your first classic Square Enix RPG. Its compact, time-spanning adventure and seamless battle presentation are easier to settle into. Choose Final Fantasy VI first when you specifically want a darker post-war story, a larger ensemble and deeper ability customization through magicite. If you intend to play both, Chrono Trigger provides the cleaner introduction; Final Fantasy VI is the broader, more politically framed follow-up.
Quick verdict
Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy VI represent two different answers to the question of what a 16-bit Japanese role-playing game should emphasize. Chrono Trigger builds a focused adventure around movement through the present, the Middle Ages, the future, prehistory and antiquity. Final Fantasy VI begins in a world still damaged by the War of the Magi, then follows Terra, Locke and a broad group of characters as they confront an Empire and the disappearance of magic.

That contrast determines which game you should play first. Chrono Trigger is the better default recommendation because its central idea is immediately legible and its campaign is organized around a single time-travel premise. Final Fantasy VI is the better first choice for players who prefer a darker tone, a larger ensemble drama and more room to shape characters with magicite.

Story shape and tone
Chrono Trigger makes time travel the organizing principle
Chrono Trigger’s story is built around movement across eras. The official description places the adventure in the present, the Middle Ages, the future, prehistory and antiquity. Each setting changes the context around the same broad journey, so the game can introduce a new historical problem without abandoning its central direction.

- [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.
That structure helps first-time players. You are not required to learn an entire political map before understanding why the next destination matters; the act of crossing time supplies the framework. The result is a globe-spanning adventure that feels imaginative without becoming difficult to parse. Its premise also gives the campaign momentum: a decision in one era can matter in another, making the setting itself part of the story rather than a backdrop.
Square Enix presents Chrono Trigger as the product of a “dream project” involving staff associated with Dragon Quest, Dragon Ball and Final Fantasy. That description explains the game’s broad appeal without requiring you to know any of those series in advance. It is still a self-contained RPG, and its appeal comes from the way its eras, characters and battles fit together.
Final Fantasy VI starts with a damaged world and expands outward
Final Fantasy VI originally released for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1994. Square Enix’s synopsis begins after the War of the Magi, a conflict that left the world changed and magic nearly gone. Terra is enslaved by the Empire, escapes with Locke and becomes the entry point into a story that gradually gives more space to a broad roster of playable characters.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe tone is consequently darker than Chrono Trigger’s. The conflict is not only an adventure across unusual locations; it is also about the consequences of war, the control of people with unusual powers and a society trying to live after a magical catastrophe. The political framing gives the story weight, while the ensemble format allows different characters to represent different responses to the Empire and to the loss of magic.
Final Fantasy VI’s scale can be rewarding if you enjoy stories that keep widening their perspective. It can also make the opening feel less immediately tidy than Chrono Trigger’s. You are asked to absorb a damaged world, an authoritarian power and several important characters before the full shape of the journey is clear.

Which story is easier to get into?
Chrono Trigger is easier to enter when you want a single, quickly understood hook. “A journey through time” tells you what kind of adventure you are beginning, and the movement between eras creates natural chapter breaks.
Final Fantasy VI is easier to enter when you are already comfortable with an ensemble narrative. Its opening gives you a strong personal viewpoint through Terra and Locke, but the game expects the cast and the setting to become increasingly important. Choose it first for atmosphere and dramatic breadth rather than for the most streamlined onboarding.
Combat and party design
Chrono Trigger prioritizes flow
Square Enix’s official materials specifically highlight Chrono Trigger’s seamless battles. The practical effect is a presentation that keeps exploration and combat closely connected instead of treating every encounter as a heavily separated mode. That supports the game’s brisk, adventure-first identity: you move through a new era, encounter a threat and continue the journey without a large amount of friction between those activities.
The game’s design also serves its compact central premise. You are learning how the eras relate to one another while following a relatively focused dramatic line, so the combat system does not have to carry the entire burden of explaining a huge political world. If you are returning to 16-bit RPGs after a long break, this combination of clear direction and seamless encounters makes Chrono Trigger a forgiving first stop.
Final Fantasy VI gives the party more room to develop
Final Fantasy VI is defined by its robust roster of playable characters. Instead of treating the party as a small, fixed unit for the whole adventure, it gives you a wider group whose abilities and stories can shape how you approach the game.

- [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by
Magicite is the system that ties this flexibility together. Square Enix describes it as a way to customize party abilities, magic spells and summons. That means character development is not only about advancing through the story; it also involves deciding which magical options and summon-related benefits fit the team you are building.

This flexibility is a major reason to choose Final Fantasy VI first. Players who enjoy experimenting with builds, moving abilities between characters and adjusting a party to match a challenge will find more to manage than in a narrowly focused introductory RPG. The trade-off is cognitive load: you have a larger roster and a more consequential set of customization decisions to understand.
Which combat approach suits you?
- Choose Chrono Trigger if you want battles to support a fast-moving adventure and prefer to spend more attention on the time-spanning story than on party optimization.
- Choose Final Fantasy VI if you want the party itself to be a major system, with a broad cast and magicite-based control over abilities, spells and summons.
- Choose the Pixel Remaster when convenience features matter. Its documented controls for encounters, experience and auto-battle can reduce routine friction while you learn the larger system.
Current editions and what each version adds
Chrono Trigger on mobile and PC
Square Enix lists the iPhone/iPod touch release date as 9 December 2011 and the Android release date as 22 December 2011. The publisher says the mobile edition retains the story and battle presentation while adding the Nintendo DS-era Dimensional Vortex and Lost Sanctum content. Those additions make the mobile release more than a straight presentation change for players who want the expanded version associated with the DS edition.
Square Enix’s press catalog lists a Chrono Trigger PC edition dated 27 February 2018. No separate feature list for that release is published there, so do not assume that every mobile-specific addition or control is identical on PC without checking the store page for your region.
The same official product page reports 3.5 million cumulative worldwide shipments as of 2018. That is a historical shipment figure from the publisher’s 2018 mobile-era page, not a current sales total or a measure of how many people are playing today.

Final Fantasy VI Pixel Remaster
The Pixel Remaster is the most clearly documented modern package for Final Fantasy VI. Square Enix announced digital PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch availability on 19 April 2023. The publisher’s Final Fantasy Portal announcement also names Steam, the App Store, Google Play and the Amazon App Store as purchase channels.
The remaster’s documented features are aimed at both presentation and convenience:
- Updated 2D pixel graphics.
- A rearranged soundtrack overseen by original composer Nobuo Uematsu.
- A modernized user interface.
- Auto-battle for reducing repetitive input.
- An option to disable encounters.
- Experience multipliers ranging from 0 to 4.
- A bestiary for tracking encountered creatures.
- An illustration gallery.
- A music player.
These options let you tune the amount of old-school friction you want. You can keep encounters and normal progression for a traditional run, or disable encounters and adjust experience when you want to focus on the story and party systems. Because the documented release list covers PC, mobile and consoles, Final Fantasy VI is also the easier choice if you want to move between modern platforms.

Which game should you play first?
Pick Chrono Trigger first when you want the safest introduction
- You are new to classic Square Enix RPGs and want a premise you can understand immediately.
- You prefer a focused adventure to a story that keeps adding major viewpoints.
- You like a bright, exploratory tone and the idea of moving through several historical eras.
- You want seamless battles to keep the campaign moving.
- You plan to play both and want the cleaner onboarding experience before tackling a larger ensemble.
Pick Final Fantasy VI first when drama and customization come first
- You want a darker story about the aftermath of war, an Empire and the disappearance of magic.
- You enjoy a broad playable roster rather than a tightly focused group.
- You want to customize abilities, spells and summons through magicite.
- You value modern controls such as auto-battle, encounter disabling and adjustable experience.
- You prefer to play on a console, PC or mobile device covered by the Pixel Remaster’s documented release list.
Use this two-game order
If you have time for both, play Chrono Trigger first and Final Fantasy VI second. Chrono Trigger teaches the basic language of classic Square RPG storytelling through a compact, high-concept journey. Final Fantasy VI then gives you a larger cast, a more politically framed setting and a more flexible customization system to explore.
Best Value
This order is a recommendation about onboarding, not a statement that one game replaces the other. Final Fantasy VI’s darker atmosphere may be exactly what you want on day one, and the Pixel Remaster’s accessibility options can make its systems less demanding. The deciding factor is whether you want clarity and momentum or breadth and dramatic weight.
How to choose a version before you start
Choose based on platform first
For Chrono Trigger, decide between the documented PC edition and the mobile editions. If the additional Dimensional Vortex and Lost Sanctum content matters to you, verify that the edition you select includes the mobile-era features Square Enix describes.
For Final Fantasy VI, the Pixel Remaster gives you the broadest documented platform choice. Select Steam or a console if you want a larger-screen setup, or a mobile storefront if touch controls and portability matter more. The core story is the same classic adventure, while the remaster features change how much routine work you have to do.
Choose based on how much friction you want
Chrono Trigger’s documented mobile description emphasizes preserving its story and seamless battles, so it suits players who want the original flow with added content. Final Fantasy VI Pixel Remaster is the better fit if you want explicit control over encounters and experience. Setting the experience multiplier to 0 through 4, or disabling encounters, lets you decide whether progression or narrative pace should dominate your run.
What not to use as a deciding factor
No authoritative playtime figure is published for either game. Avoid choosing on the basis of an uncited number of hours. Chrono Trigger’s relevant scope advantage is the way its narrative travels across eras and stays focused; Final Fantasy VI’s is the size of its ensemble and the breadth of its post-war dramatic structure.
Likewise, do not treat the 3.5 million worldwide shipment figure for Chrono Trigger as a current popularity ranking. It is a historical figure reported by Square Enix in 2018. It demonstrates long-term reach, but it cannot tell you which game will match your preferred tone or platform today.
Bottom line for a first playthrough
Start with Chrono Trigger unless you already know that you want a darker ensemble drama and extensive party customization. Its time-travel premise, focused direction and seamless battle presentation make it the most approachable entry point. Move to Final Fantasy VI afterward for the larger roster, magicite system and post-war story, or start there immediately if those are the features that matter most to you.
