A blank Chromium screenshot can mean the browser never reached the page, the capture ran before content appeared, the output is wrong, or a graphics surface failed. Check the current URL and DOM before changing browser flags: that quickly separates navigation and automation problems from rendering problems. Also identify your Chromium version and headless implementation; since M132, the old headless functionality is no longer part of the Chrome binary, and the Chromium project directs users who rely on it to chrome-headless-shell.
Start by finding which layer failed
A screenshot file that exists does not prove Chromium loaded or rendered the intended page. Diagnose the failure in order: browser and session, navigation and DOM, capture timing, output arguments, then graphics.

- Record the environment. Note the exact browser binary and version, operating system or container, automation library and version, and whether the page uses WebGL or WebGPU. Establish whether you are running current Chrome headless or a separately packaged headless shell.
- Check the page before checking the pixels. Log the browser’s current URL and page title; inspect
document.readyStateand whether the body contains the expected content. If the URL is stillabout:blankor the DOM is empty, investigate navigation and the automation session before changing rendering flags. - Verify the screenshot output. Confirm the output path, extension, dimensions, and modification time. Make sure your image viewer or downstream process is opening the newly generated file, not a stale screenshot.
- Compare direct capture with automation. Run the same binary against the same page directly, then through the automation library. If direct capture works but automation does not, focus on target selection, browser context, session state, and navigation handling.
- Test timing and graphics separately. Wait for a page-specific readiness condition before trying a time-based wait. Investigate GPU behavior only if the failure is tied to graphics-heavy content or browser diagnostics.
Check the Chromium version and headless implementation
Advice written for older headless Chrome may not apply to the binary installed on your system. The Chromium project’s Headless README notes that, as of M132, the old Headless functionality is no longer part of the Chrome binary; users relying on that implementation are directed to chrome-headless-shell (Chromium Headless README).
Record the version and path of the binary your automation actually launches, rather than assuming it uses the system default. A package manager, container image, or automation framework may select a different executable. If you switch between Chrome and chrome-headless-shell, retest the same URL and capture arguments before changing other variables.

Confirm navigation and the active browser session
A successful navigation message from an automation tool is not enough to establish that the intended page is active. Check the current URL, title, and body in the same browser target and context used for the screenshot. A reported Chrome DevTools MCP incident remained at about:blank despite a reported navigation success, while the reporter said manual headless Chrome worked. That individual report is a reason to check the automation or session layer—not evidence of a general MCP defect (ChromeDevTools MCP issue report).
- If the URL is wrong, verify that the navigation call received the intended URL and that you are inspecting the same tab or target that will be captured.
- If the URL is right but the body is empty, inspect the page’s response and browser console or automation logs for failed navigation, script errors, or a page that has not populated.
- If direct command-line capture works but the library capture stays blank, check how the library creates and selects browser contexts, tabs, or targets and whether it awaits navigation before taking the screenshot.
Wait for the page’s actual readiness condition
Navigation completion and page readiness are different. A site may render its main content only after client-side JavaScript runs, an API responds, or a particular element appears. Compare the DOM immediately before capture with the resulting image. If expected content is absent from the DOM, waiting longer may help only if it is genuinely delayed; if the DOM has the content but the screenshot is blank, investigate capture or graphics instead.

Chrome’s headless documentation describes --timeout and --virtual-time-budget as ways to allow delayed page content to appear in a capture (Chrome for Developers: Headless mode). Use a page-specific readiness signal or wait for a required element when your automation framework supports it. A fixed delay can help isolate a timing issue, but it is not a substitute for checking readiness.

Verify screenshot format, path, and dimensions
Check the output extension and viewport arguments against the command you are running. Chromium’s headless command handler recognizes .png, .jpeg, .jpg, and .webp; it can pass a valid --window-size through to screenshot capture and logs unsupported extensions (Chromium headless command handler).
- Use a supported extension that matches the format you expect the consumer to read.
- Check that width and height are nonzero and appropriate for the page; inspect the image’s actual dimensions rather than relying only on the command that produced it.
- Confirm the output file was written to the path you expect and that the process completed before another tool reads it.
- Read browser logs for a warning about an unsupported extension or invalid arguments.
Isolate graphics problems only when the symptoms point there
If ordinary pages capture correctly but a WebGL- or WebGPU-heavy page is blank or wrong, graphics presentation may be involved. First compare a simple page with the affected page and inspect browser GPU diagnostics and logs. Then test a controlled graphics configuration, changing one variable at a time.

A Vercel Labs report describes blank or incorrect WebGPU screenshots in a particular Vulkan setup and a workaround involving headed Chromium under Xvfb with graphics flags (Vercel Labs vgpu issue report). It is an environment-specific incident, not a universal fix for ordinary pages, every operating system, or all headless runs. Do not reflexively disable GPU acceleration or add Xvfb unless the evidence implicates graphics.
Build a minimal reproduction
- Use the exact browser binary and version from the failing run.
- Capture the same URL directly from the command line, then through the automation library.
- Before each capture, record the current URL, title, readiness state, expected body content, and screenshot dimensions.
- Try a minimal page without external scripts or assets. Then compare it with the failing page.
- If only automation fails, investigate its session and navigation control. If only the graphics-heavy page fails, investigate the graphics path. If waiting changes the DOM and image, focus on the page’s readiness condition.
This comparison localizes the likely failure layer without treating any one flag as a cure-all. The available documentation and incident reports do not establish a universal one-flag fix or a prevalence ranking for blank screenshots.

If you need a screenshot in an application rather than a local Chromium diagnosis, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request returns an image or PDF; its capture flow accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. Those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides screenshot tools for AI agents, and 1,000 screenshots a month are free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.
