Google ended Chromecast production in 2024, and remaining units were available only while supplies lasted. Existing devices did not become unsupported at the same time: Google said the support policy for them was unchanged, while noting continued software and security updates for its latest devices. If you want a new streaming player, Google’s named successor is the Google TV Streamer (4K); Roku and Fire TV sticks are alternatives if you prefer those platforms.
What Google’s discontinuation means
On August 6, 2024, Google announced that it was ending Chromecast production after 11 years. The company said more than 100 million devices had been sold over that period; that is Google’s own figure, not an independently verified market total. Remaining Chromecast inventory would be available only while supplies lasted. Google’s announcement did not set a specific end date for support.

For people who already own a Chromecast, the announcement did not say that existing devices had stopped working or that support had ended. Google said the support policy for existing devices was not changing and cited continued software and security updates for the latest devices. It did not promise that every older model would receive updates indefinitely, so there is no announced universal support end date to rely on.

How to choose the right replacement
Start with the platform
Google TV Streamer is the direct choice if you want Google’s successor and its platform. Roku and Fire TV are separate ecosystems: pick one for its interface and household preferences, not because it duplicates every Chromecast feature.
Check the physical setup
The Google TV Streamer is a set-top style device, so it is not a like-for-like replacement if you specifically want the smallest possible HDMI stick. Roku Streaming Stick 4K and Fire TV Stick 4K Max use stick form factors. Check your TV’s available HDMI port and whether the player’s placement suits your setup.

- The ultimate Roku remote: The rechargeable Roku Voice Remote Pro offers backlit buttons, hands-free voice controls, and a lost remote finder.
- No more fumbling in the dark: See what you’re pressing with backlit buttons.
- Say goodbye to batteries: Keep your remote powered for months on a single charge.
Match picture and sound to your equipment
4K playback is useful only with a compatible 4K display. HDR formats and Dolby audio features also depend on the TV and sound equipment supporting them. Google recommends a 4K television for the best Google TV Streamer experience; compare the listed HDR and audio formats with your own equipment rather than assuming every feature will be available.
Consider the network connection
Google’s 2024 announcement lists an Ethernet port on Google TV Streamer. Roku’s product page and Amazon’s device specifications document Wi-Fi capabilities for their respective sticks. If you need a wired connection, confirm the exact device and any adapter requirements before buying; do not assume the alternatives have the same port arrangement.
