What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Start by checking the wall plates in the rooms where you want a wired connection, then trace the matching cable to the home’s wiring or media panel. A jack is only a connection point: it may need to be connected to a router or switch before it provides network service.
Where to look for an Ethernet jack
Check wall plates near desks, televisions, and home-office areas. Network jacks may be marked “Ethernet,” “data,” “Cat5e,” or “Cat6.” Residential structured-cabling connectors can be installed in both room outlets and patch panels, as shown in Leviton’s Cat 6 connector documentation.

A modular jack or an unlabeled plate is not proof that the connection is Ethernet or active. If the plate is not clearly marked, tracing its cable is the more reliable way to identify the run.
Find where the room cable terminates
Look for a structured wiring cabinet or media panel, often in a closet or utility area. It may hold bundles of low-voltage cable, patch-panel connections, and provider equipment. Some homes instead have an in-wall patch panel, for example in a den or storage closet, as described by Novus.

Fiber installations can be arranged differently: the connection may be at a wall plate or at an optical network unit (ONT) in a media panel. Spectrum Support describes both types of setup. The panel’s location and layout vary, so do not assume every home has the same central point.
Identify an unlabeled cable
- Inspect the panel. Look for cable labels, numbered patch-panel ports, or cables that appear to match the room jack. Do not assume that a cable is identified just because it is bundled with provider equipment.
- Use a toner and probe to trace the run. Connect a compatible toner to the room jack or cable end, then use the probe at the panel to find the matching cable. Check that the tool supports the connection you are testing and follow its instructions.
- Use a cable tester to check continuity. A tester can help determine whether conductors connect end to end, but continuity testing is not the same as locating a hidden cable. For tracing an unknown run, a toner-and-probe tool is the relevant function. A community troubleshooting discussion mentions testers and tracers for this purpose, but it is anecdotal guidance rather than a comparative tool evaluation: HomeNetworking discussion.
- Label both ends once you have a match. Mark the wall jack and its corresponding cable or patch-panel port. The University of Alaska Anchorage wiring standard recommends labeling connections at wall plates and patch-panel ports to support end-to-end identification.
Why a found jack may not work
A room jack is a physical connection point for a wired device; it does not necessarily connect directly to your router. Microsoft’s guidance on connecting to a network describes using a room Ethernet jack to connect a device to a wired network, while the home wiring still needs a path to network equipment.

If the cable is identified but the device has no connection, check whether the matching run is patched to a router’s LAN port or to a network switch connected to the router. A provider’s fiber equipment may also be part of the path, depending on the installation. Spectrum’s connection guidance covers fiber equipment arrangements, and Novus describes using a short Ethernet cable between a main data connection and a room connection.
