Chromebook vs. Windows screenshot shortcuts: which capture tools work differently?

The key difference is the keyboard layout and what each shortcut does next. On a Chromebook, press Ctrl + Show Windows for the whole screen or Shift + Ctrl + Show Windows for a selected area. On Windows, Windows logo key + Shift + S opens the Snipping Tool capture interface for a region, while Windows logo key + PrtScn captures the entire screen and saves a file in PicturesScreenshots.

Chromebook and Windows shortcuts at a glance

Chromebook and Windows use different names for their key controls, so a shortcut that looks familiar on one platform may not exist on the other. The Chromebook’s distinctive key is Show Windows; Windows relies on the Windows logo key, PrtScn, and the Snipping Tool.

Task Chromebook / ChromeOS Windows 10/11
Capture the full screen Ctrl + Show Windows Windows + PrtScn; saves to PicturesScreenshots
Capture a rectangular region Shift + Ctrl + Show Windows, then select and drag Windows + Shift + S; selection is copied to the clipboard
Open additional still-image controls Ctrl + Shift + Show Windows Windows + Shift + S opens the Snipping Tool capture interface
Start a screen recording No matching recording shortcut is listed in Google’s basic screenshot shortcut list Windows + Shift + R opens video capture in Snipping Tool
Keyboard without the platform’s usual key External keyboard alternative: Ctrl + Shift + F5 when Show Windows is absent Fn + Windows + Space Bar is documented for devices without a PrtScn key

The practical distinction is destination as well as selection. ChromeOS gives you a capture that can be reviewed, deleted, or shared. Windows has one shortcut that puts a selected image on the clipboard and another that writes a full-screen image to a known folder.

Identify the keys before trying a shortcut

Chromebook’s Show Windows key

On a standard Chromebook keyboard, Show Windows is a top-row key marked with a rectangle and two vertical lines. Google’s Chromebook Help calls it the “Show Windows” key and uses that name in its official shortcuts. It is not the same key as the Windows logo key found on a Windows keyboard.

Some Chromebook models use a tablet-style or detachable keyboard, and third-party keyboards may not print the Show Windows symbol. If the physical key is missing, use the documented external-keyboard combination Ctrl + Shift + F5.

Windows logo key, PrtScn, and Fn layers

Windows shortcuts use the key with the four-pane Windows logo. The full-screen file shortcut also needs PrtScn (Print Screen), which may share a key with another function on a laptop. If your keyboard has no dedicated PrtScn key, Microsoft documents Fn + Windows + Space Bar for that hardware situation.

Labels vary by manufacturer and regional layout. A key marked Print Screen, PrtSc, or PrtScn can represent the same function, while a laptop may require holding Fn. The printed label and the keyboard’s function layer matter more than the exact abbreviation.

How to take screenshots on a Chromebook

Capture the entire screen

  1. Press Ctrl + Show Windows at the same time.
  2. Release both keys after ChromeOS registers the shortcut.
  3. Use the resulting capture controls or notification to review the image. Google’s help describes options to review, delete, and share captures.

Google’s official wording is: “Take a screenshot: Press Ctrl + Show Windows.” This is the quickest Chromebook equivalent to a Windows full-screen screenshot, but the shortcut itself does not use a Print Screen key.

Capture only part of the screen

  1. Press Shift + Ctrl + Show Windows.
  2. When the capture mode appears, place the pointer at one corner of the area you need.
  3. Click or press, then drag across the region.
  4. Release to take the selected capture.

This is useful for a single dialog, browser panel, image, or section of a document because it avoids cropping a full-screen image afterward.

Open the broader capture controls

Press Ctrl + Shift + Show Windows for additional capture options. Google lists this combination separately from the direct full-screen and partial-screen commands, so use it when you want the on-screen capture controls rather than an immediate basic capture.

Use an external keyboard without Show Windows

Google documents Ctrl + Shift + F5 as the alternative when an external keyboard does not have a Show Windows key. The shortcut is especially relevant when a Chromebook is connected to a conventional desktop keyboard whose top row uses function keys instead of ChromeOS symbols.

Capture on a Chromebook tablet

On a Chromebook tablet, press Power + Volume Down. Google also documents a Screen capture control in the power menu. These tablet controls are separate from the physical-keyboard combinations, so use them when the keyboard is detached or unavailable.

What happens after the capture

ChromeOS presents tools for reviewing a capture and for deleting or sharing it. The exact notification appearance can vary by ChromeOS version and device form factor, but the key workflow is the same: take the image, open the capture’s controls, and choose the follow-up action instead of assuming that the keyboard shortcut copied an image to the clipboard.

How to take screenshots in Windows 10 and Windows 11

Select an area with Snipping Tool

  1. Press Windows + Shift + S.
  2. Wait for the Snipping Tool capture interface to appear.
  3. Choose the available capture mode if the interface presents more than one option.
  4. Select the area of the screen you want to capture.
  5. Use the resulting Snipping Tool notification or window to review the image and continue with editing or saving.

Microsoft’s official shortcut description is: “Press Windows logo key + Shift + S to capture a screenshot.” Microsoft’s keyboard-shortcut reference specifies that this regional selection is copied to the clipboard. That means you can paste it directly into a chat, document, image editor, or email without first finding a saved file.

Save the entire screen automatically

  1. Press Windows + PrtScn.
  2. Allow the screen to flash or otherwise acknowledge the capture, depending on the device.
  3. Open the PicturesScreenshots folder to find the image file.

Microsoft identifies this shortcut as a full-screen capture that saves to the Screenshots subfolder of Pictures. It is the Windows counterpart to a Chromebook full-screen capture when your priority is an immediately saved file rather than a selected region on the clipboard.

Use the PRINT SCREEN key by itself

Microsoft support lists both Snipping Tool and the PRINT SCREEN key as ways to make screenshots. On some Windows configurations, pressing PrtScn is assigned to open Snipping Tool instead of silently placing the entire screen on the clipboard. That is why a reader may see Snipping Tool after pressing Print Screen: Windows can route that key into the capture interface, and laptop hardware may also change the key’s behavior through an Fn layer.

If you need a predictable saved full-screen file, use Windows + PrtScn. If you need a selectable region, use Windows + Shift + S. Those combinations avoid guessing what a standalone Print Screen key has been configured to do.

Record a video of the screen

  1. Press Windows + Shift + R.
  2. When Snipping Tool’s video capture controls appear, define the area to record.
  3. Start and stop the recording from the on-screen controls.

Microsoft documents “Press Windows logo key + Shift + R to start a screen recording.” This is a video workflow in Snipping Tool, not a still-image shortcut, and it has no direct one-key equivalent in Google’s basic Chromebook screenshot list.

Clipboard versus automatic file saving

Knowing where the image goes prevents the most common screenshot mistake: taking a capture successfully but looking in the wrong place for it.

Result What you get Best use
Chromebook full-screen or partial capture ChromeOS capture with controls for review, deletion, and sharing Quick sharing or follow-up from the capture notification
Windows Windows + Shift + S Selected image copied to the clipboard Immediate paste into another app
Windows Windows + PrtScn Full-screen image saved in PicturesScreenshots Building a file archive or attaching an image later
Windows Windows + Shift + R Video capture workflow in Snipping Tool Recording a demonstrated action rather than a single moment

On Windows, a clipboard capture can appear to vanish because it is not necessarily a file in Pictures. Paste it with Ctrl + V into the destination app or open the Snipping Tool result to continue working with it. Conversely, a file created by Windows + PrtScn may not appear in the clipboard at all; check the Screenshots folder.

Which shortcut should you choose?

Choose a Chromebook shortcut when you need a fast still image

  • Use Ctrl + Show Windows for an entire-screen reference.
  • Use Shift + Ctrl + Show Windows when only a defined region matters.
  • Use Ctrl + Shift + Show Windows when you want the wider set of capture controls.
  • On a tablet, use Power + Volume Down or the Screen capture control in the power menu.

Choose a Windows shortcut based on the destination

  • Use Windows + Shift + S when the next action is pasting the selected image into another program.
  • Use Windows + PrtScn when you want a full-screen file in a known folder.
  • Use Windows + Shift + R when a recording communicates more than a still image.
  • Use Snipping Tool or PRINT SCREEN when you want to work through the Windows capture interface and your device’s key mapping supports it.

Common problems and fixes

The Chromebook shortcut does nothing

  • Check that you are pressing the key labeled Show Windows, not a Windows logo key from an external keyboard.
  • If the external keyboard has no Show Windows key, try Ctrl + Shift + F5.
  • On a tablet or detached-keyboard setup, use Power + Volume Down or the power menu’s Screen capture control.
  • Press the keys together rather than starting one shortcut and waiting several seconds before pressing the others.

The Windows shortcut does nothing

  • Confirm that the Windows logo key is not locked by a keyboard gaming mode or hardware switch.
  • Try the laptop’s Fn layer if PrtScn shares a key with another function.
  • If there is no PrtScn key, Microsoft’s documented alternative is Fn + Windows + Space Bar.
  • For a regional capture, use Windows + Shift + S rather than relying on a standalone Print Screen key.

The image cannot be found

  • After a Chromebook capture, open the capture notification or controls to review, delete, or share it.
  • After Windows + Shift + S, paste from the clipboard or open the Snipping Tool result; do not expect the image to be in PicturesScreenshots automatically.
  • After Windows + PrtScn, check PicturesScreenshots.

Print Screen opens Snipping Tool unexpectedly

That behavior can be a Windows configuration choice rather than a hardware failure. Microsoft supports screenshots through Snipping Tool and through PRINT SCREEN, and Windows devices can assign the Print Screen key to the Snipping Tool interface. Use the explicit Windows shortcut that matches your goal: Windows + Shift + S for a region or Windows + PrtScn for a saved full-screen image.

Working across both platforms

If you regularly move between ChromeOS and Windows, memorize the platform-specific anchor rather than trying to translate the whole shortcut. On Chromebook, look for Show Windows. On Windows, look for the Windows logo key and decide whether you also need PrtScn.

For documentation or support work, decide first whether the recipient needs a file, a pasted image, or a recording. That decision determines the shortcut more reliably than the operating system name alone: Windows provides a dedicated saved-file combination, while its regional shortcut is clipboard-oriented; ChromeOS emphasizes capture controls for reviewing and sharing.

Keyboard labels can change with regional layouts, laptop function layers, detachable keyboards, and external accessories. When a familiar combination fails, identify the actual key printed on the keyboard and use the platform’s documented alternative rather than assuming the key is absent from the operating system.

Bottom line

Chromebook full-screen capture is Ctrl + Show Windows, with Shift + Ctrl + Show Windows for a selected area and Ctrl + Shift + Show Windows for more controls. Windows separates the jobs: Windows + Shift + S selects a region through Snipping Tool and places it on the clipboard, Windows + PrtScn saves the entire screen in PicturesScreenshots, and Windows + Shift + R starts a recording. The key labels and the destination of the result are the differences that matter most.
