You can also open the Screen Capture toolbar for full-screen, partial-screen, or window captures; change the save folder; and open the result in Gallery for basic edits. The exact key combination depends on whether you are using a built-in Chromebook keyboard, an external keyboard, or tablet mode.

Which Chromebook screenshot shortcut should you use?
ChromeOS includes three built-in capture scopes: the whole screen, a selected rectangle, and one application window. Choose the method that matches what you need to show.
| What you want to capture | Built-in Chromebook keyboard | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Entire screen | Ctrl + Show windows | The complete visible desktop is captured. |
| Part of the screen | Shift + Ctrl + Show windows | The pointer changes so you can click and drag a rectangle. |
| Full, partial, or window options | Ctrl + Shift + Show windows | The Screen Capture toolbar opens with capture-mode controls. |
| Chromebook tablet mode | Power + Volume down | A hardware-button capture is taken without a keyboard. |
| External keyboard without Show windows | Ctrl + Shift + F5 | Google documents this alternative for compatible external keyboards. |
Google Chromebook Help lists the standard commands as “Take a screenshot: Press Ctrl + Show Windows,” “Take a partial screenshot: Press Shift + Ctrl + Show windows,” and “To access more screenshot features: Press Ctrl + Shift + Show windows.” The capitalization of “Show windows” may vary in documentation, but it refers to the same key.

Find the Show windows key
On a typical US Chromebook keyboard, Show windows is the key marked with a rectangle and lines, usually in the top row. It is not the browser key that opens a new tab or switches between tabs. If you press the wrong key, the shortcut may appear to do nothing or perform a different browser action.
Use the dedicated Screenshot key
Some Chromebook keyboards include a key labeled Screenshot. Press it to open the capture controls, then choose Screenshot and select full-screen, partial, or window capture as available on your device. This is useful when you do not want to remember the modifier-key combination.
Use another keyboard layout
International Chromebook layouts can place or label keys differently. If the printed symbol is unclear, open the Screen Capture control from the system menu instead of guessing. On an external Windows keyboard, Google says the Windows key can substitute for Search in Chromebook shortcuts; on a Mac keyboard, the Command key can substitute for Search. The external-keyboard screenshot command documented by Google is Ctrl + Shift + F5 when Show windows is unavailable.

How to open the Screen Capture toolbar
The toolbar is the most flexible approach because it exposes the available capture scopes and settings in one place.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Show windows. Alternatively, open the bottom-right status area and choose Screen capture.
- Choose whether you want a full-screen, partial-screen, or window capture. The available icons indicate the scope.
- For a partial capture, click and drag across the area, then release. Adjust the selection before confirming if the toolbar offers handles.
- For a window capture, select the application window you want to record rather than dragging around the whole desktop.
- Use the toolbar’s Settings control if you need to change where future captures are stored.
Opening the toolbar takes an extra action compared with a direct shortcut, but it is preferable when you need to decide the capture scope each time or cannot identify the correct keyboard key.
How to take a full-screen screenshot
With the built-in keyboard
- Display the screen exactly as you want it captured. Close menus or notifications that should not appear.
- Press Ctrl + Show windows at the same time.
- Wait for the capture confirmation. ChromeOS saves the image and places a copy on the clipboard.
- Open Files if you need to locate, rename, move, or open the saved image.
With the toolbar
Press Ctrl + Shift + Show windows, choose the full-screen option, and activate the capture control. This route works on devices where a dedicated Screenshot key is present as well as devices using the standard Show windows key.

How to take a partial screenshot
- Press Shift + Ctrl + Show windows.
- When the selection pointer appears, place it at one corner of the area you want.
- Click and drag to the opposite corner. Include only the content that should be shared; anything outside the rectangle is excluded.
- Release the pointer to complete the capture.
- Open the saved file from Downloads or paste the clipboard copy directly into a compatible app.
If dragging does not begin, use the Screen Capture toolbar instead: open it with Ctrl + Shift + Show windows, select partial capture, and then drag the selection. A partial capture is useful for a dialog box, a single chart, or a small section of a webpage when a full desktop image would reveal unrelated information.

How to capture one window
Window capture is available through the Screen Capture toolbar. Open the toolbar with Ctrl + Shift + Show windows, select the window-capture option, and click the application window you want. This avoids manually trimming the desktop around a browser or app and keeps the result focused on one window. The exact icon arrangement can vary by ChromeOS release.
Where Chromebook screenshots are saved
Default location: Downloads
ChromeOS saves screenshots and screen recordings to Downloads by default. Google describes Downloads as a temporary folder on the Chromebook’s local drive, so it is not the same as a permanently synchronized cloud folder. If the image matters, move or copy it to a location that is included in your backup routine.

Find a capture in Files
- Open the Files app from the launcher or shelf.
- Select Downloads in the left sidebar.
- Use the search field if you have many files, or sort by date to put the newest capture where you can see it.
- Double-click the image to open it in the available image viewer, normally Gallery.
Files can also move the image to another local folder. Google Drive and other cloud file systems appear in Files as locations when they are available on your Chromebook, allowing you to transfer the screenshot without first downloading a separate utility.
Change the destination folder
- Open Screen Capture with Shift + Ctrl + Show windows (the same capture controls can also be reached from the status area).
- Select Settings.
- Choose Select folder.
- Pick the local or available cloud location where new screenshots should be placed.
The selected folder applies to new screenshots. Existing files remain in their current location until you move them in Files.
Paste without opening the file
Every capture is copied to the clipboard automatically. Immediately after taking the screenshot, use the paste command in a compatible app—for example, a document, message composer, or image editor. Clipboard pasting is the fastest option when you need to send the image once and do not need to organize the saved file first.

How to edit a Chromebook screenshot
Open the image in Gallery
- Open Files and go to Downloads or the folder you selected for captures.
- Double-click the screenshot.
- Use the Gallery editing controls that appear for your Chromebook and ChromeOS release.
Google’s documented basic Gallery tools include crop and rotate, rescale, and rename. Crop removes unwanted edges, rotate corrects orientation, rescale changes the image dimensions, and rename makes the file easier to identify later.
Know what Gallery may not provide
The exact Gallery feature set can vary by Chromebook model and ChromeOS release. For a simple crop, rotation, resize, or filename change, the built-in tools are usually sufficient. If you need advanced retouching, layers, annotations, or other controls that are not shown in Gallery, open the saved image in another compatible image editor. Avoid assuming that every Chromebook exposes identical editing buttons.
Keyboard, tablet, and input variations
Tablet-mode Chromebook
On a Chromebook being used as a tablet, press Power + Volume down together. This hardware shortcut is independent of the on-screen keyboard and is the practical choice when the physical keyboard is folded away or detached.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsExternal keyboard
An external keyboard may not have a Show windows key. Try Ctrl + Shift + F5, Google’s documented combination for that situation. If the keyboard uses Windows or Command labeling, remember that those keys can substitute for Search in Chromebook shortcuts, but they do not replace the need to use the documented screenshot combination when Show windows is absent.
Customized shortcuts
ChromeOS supports shortcut management through the Shortcuts app. If a familiar combination has been changed, open that app to inspect the assignment and reset or edit supported shortcuts. Some shortcuts are locked and cannot be changed. A newly selected combination can also conflict with another command, so choose an unused assignment when the app reports a conflict.
Quick Recap
Troubleshooting screenshots that do not work
- Nothing happens: Verify that you are pressing Show windows—the rectangle-and-lines key—not a browser tab key. Then open the bottom-right status area and choose Screen capture to test the feature without a shortcut.
- The image is not in Downloads: Open Screen Capture, choose Settings, and inspect Select folder. A previous change may have redirected new captures.
- You cannot find the file: In Files, search by name or sort by date. Check both Downloads and the folder shown in Screen Capture settings.
- External keyboard commands fail: Try Ctrl + Shift + F5 and confirm that the keyboard is sending the expected function-key input. If it has a function-lock mode, you may need to change that mode before F5 is recognized.
- The result is the wrong scope: Use the toolbar and explicitly select full-screen, partial, or window capture instead of relying on a remembered shortcut.
- Editing controls are missing: Open the file through Files and check Gallery’s available tools. Feature availability can differ by model and ChromeOS release; use another compatible editor only for functions Gallery does not provide.
- A customized shortcut conflicts: Open the Shortcuts app, inspect the assignment, and reset it or choose a combination that is not already in use. Locked commands cannot be reassigned.
A practical choice guide
| Situation | Best method | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| You need the whole desktop immediately | Ctrl + Show windows | One direct shortcut with no toolbar selection. |
| You need only a specific region | Shift + Ctrl + Show windows | Drag a rectangle around the content. |
| You switch between full, partial, and window captures | Screen Capture toolbar | All capture scopes are visible in one control. |
| You are using tablet mode | Power + Volume down | Works without a physical keyboard. |
| You need to paste the image once | Any capture shortcut, then paste | The screenshot is copied to the clipboard automatically. |
| You need to organize or edit the file | Files, then Gallery | Files locates and moves it; Gallery provides basic edits. |
What to remember
- Use Ctrl + Show windows for a full screenshot.
- Use Shift + Ctrl + Show windows for a selected area.
- Use Ctrl + Shift + Show windows to open the Screen Capture toolbar.
- Look in Downloads unless you changed the destination with Settings > Select folder.
- Paste immediately because captures are copied to the clipboard automatically.
- Open the file in Files and edit it in Gallery with crop, rotate, rescale, and rename tools when those controls are available.
- Use Power + Volume down on a tablet, or Ctrl + Shift + F5 with an external keyboard that lacks Show windows.
