If a Chromebook is fully shut down and its power button is broken, there is no universal, officially documented workaround that turns on every model. First check whether it is actually asleep: waking behavior varies by Chromebook, so use the instructions for your exact model. If it is off and the button does not work, contact the manufacturer or an authorized repair provider. ChromeOS recovery is for operating-system problems, not a substitute for the power button.
Check whether the Chromebook is asleep or fully shut down
A Chromebook that is asleep may be able to wake through a model-specific action. A Chromebook that is fully off needs to start up, which is a different problem. Do not assume that opening the lid, pressing a key, connecting a charger, or attaching a USB device will start every model.

Check the device’s manual or official support page for its exact wake behavior. For the convertible Chromebook families covered in its guidance, ASUS says a device that is off requires pressing the power button. That guidance applies to the specified ASUS families, not all Chromebooks.

A Chromebook that shows no sign of power does not, by itself, identify what has failed. The problem could involve the button or another part of the device, and the right diagnosis depends on the model. Find the make and model from the device label or its purchase and support records, then consult the manufacturer’s troubleshooting, warranty, and repair options. Google directs users to the manufacturer for repair if troubleshooting does not resolve the issue; Lenovo’s support material is likewise specific to its products.

Do not open the case or try to short contacts or bridge motherboard pins to start the Chromebook. Those are not general, documented startup steps, and the correct repair depends on the device.

Recovery addresses a ChromeOS installation that is missing, damaged, or otherwise needs reinstalling. It does not repair a failed power button or provide a general way to start a Chromebook that is fully off. Google’s standard recovery instructions use physical controls: hold Esc and Refresh, then press Power; some models use Esc and Maximize, then Power. These combinations enter recovery mode; they are not power-on substitutes.

Recovery also erases local data. Google warns: “Important: Recovery permanently erases everything on your Chromebook’s hard drive, even your downloaded files.” Back up files first when possible. If recovery is genuinely needed, Google specifies a USB flash drive with at least 8 GB of capacity; the process erases the selected recovery drive as well. These steps are relevant only when ChromeOS needs recovery and the device can be operated—not as a fix for a broken power control.
