Chromebook screen problems are easiest to diagnose by separating settings and software from panel hardware. Turn off Night Light, test several brightness levels, restart, compare more than one app and the sign-in screen, then check an external monitor. If an artifact remains across ChromeOS screens, appears before ChromeOS loads, or affects only the built-in display while an external monitor is clean, the panel, backlight, cable, or display output is more likely at fault.
Use the non-destructive checks first. Run ChromeOS Diagnostics before a hardware reset, and back up your files before Powerwash or Recovery because both destructive procedures can erase local data.

What to check before assuming the screen is broken
1. Turn off Night Light
Open Settings > Device > Displays and switch off Night Light. Night Light changes color temperature and can make whites look yellow or orange. That warm cast can be mistaken for a failing panel or uneven color. Also check whether Night Light is scheduled to turn on automatically.
With Night Light disabled, look at a white page, a gray gradient and a dark image. If the color cast disappears, the display hardware is probably not the cause. If bands remain in the same places in every app, continue with the hardware checks below.

2. Vary the brightness
Use the keyboard brightness controls or the brightness slider in Quick Settings. Test at low, medium and high levels while viewing the same image. Flicker that appears only at a particular brightness can indicate a backlight-control interaction; a cast that does not change may be a setting, panel uniformity issue or content characteristic.
3. Restart and isolate Chrome
Restart the Chromebook, then compare the affected content in more than one app or browser tab. Temporarily disable extensions and test again. If the problem occurs only on one page, video player or browser profile, it is less likely to be a physical panel defect. Test after each change so you know which action affected the result.
4. Check the sign-in screen and startup
Sign out or restart and observe the screen before opening an app. If the artifact is absent at the sign-in screen but appears after a particular extension, website or video starts, investigate that software context. If it is visible at sign-in, during the startup logo or before ChromeOS loads, software is less likely to be responsible.
5. Compare an external monitor
Connect a compatible monitor using the Chromebook’s supported video connection. Show the same image on both displays. A clean external image with a corrupted built-in panel points toward the internal panel, backlight or display cable. If both screens show the defect, investigate ChromeOS, firmware or the graphics/output path instead.
Symptom guide: what each defect usually means
| Symptom | Clues that suggest settings or software | Clues that suggest hardware | Best next test |
|---|---|---|---|
| Color banding | Visible only in one image, video or app; changes when Night Light is disabled | Same bands in multiple apps, sign-in screen or startup display | Test a neutral gradient and an external monitor |
| Ghosting or trails | Occurs only in a particular video, game or scrolling page | Trails remain at sign-in, across apps or when the lid moves | Compare an external monitor and record the behavior during lid movement |
| Flicker | Changes with Night Light, brightness, restart or extensions | Persists at sign-in or startup, or appears only on the built-in panel | Disable Night Light, vary brightness and compare displays |
| Uneven brightness | Changes substantially with viewing angle or brightness setting | Same bright or dark area at every setting and angle | View white and dark screens at several angles and levels |
Color banding and broken-looking gradients
Color banding is a staircase pattern where a smooth transition should appear—for example, a dark gray-to-black gradient or a blue sky. Mild steps can come from the source image, video compression, the panel’s color depth or rendering behavior. A single compressed video is not enough evidence of a damaged screen.

To test, open several unrelated images or gradient pages in different apps. Look for the same boundaries in light and dark tones. If the bands move with the content, the source or renderer is more likely. If the bands stay fixed on the panel while content changes, hardware or the display-output path becomes more likely.
ChromeOS display requirements state that HDR-capable displays must support a 10-bit color space or later. That requirement does not mean every Chromebook panel is HDR-capable or 10-bit. A non-HDR panel can therefore show more visible steps in difficult gradients without being defective.

- Disable Night Light in Settings > Device > Displays.
- Restart and view the same gradient before opening extensions or media apps.
- Compare at low and high brightness; note whether the pattern changes or remains fixed.
- Check the sign-in screen and startup logo.
- Connect an external monitor. A clean external gradient shifts suspicion to the Chromebook’s internal panel or cable.
Persistent fixed bands across apps and startup screens warrant manufacturer diagnosis rather than a browser-setting change.
Ghosting, motion trails and image retention
Ghosting appears as a faint copy of a moving object or text that lingers briefly. First determine whether it is tied to one application, video or scrolling surface. A particular video stream may contain compression artifacts, and an app may render motion differently from the rest of ChromeOS.
Run the same scrolling test in another app, then check the sign-in screen. Move the lid slightly while looking at a static image, but do not force the hinges. Trails that change when the lid angle changes can indicate an intermittent display cable or connector. Trails that remain on the panel regardless of software and lid position are more consistent with panel response or another hardware fault.

An external-monitor comparison is especially useful. If the external image is clean while the built-in display leaves trails, the internal panel or its connection needs service. If both displays show the trails, investigate ChromeOS, firmware or the graphics path. Persistent trails at sign-in or during lid movement should be documented for the manufacturer; a browser reset cannot repair a failing panel or cable.
Flickering screen
Flicker can look like rapid brightness pulsing, horizontal interruptions or a screen that briefly goes black. Start with the reversible checks: turn off Night Light, vary brightness, restart and disable extensions. Compare a static page, a video and the sign-in screen. This pattern tells you whether the trigger is content, software or the display hardware.
ChromeOS’s display specification says a supported display should have no discernable flicker (0 frames)
when HDCP is enabled or disabled. That is a specification target, not a guarantee that every visible flicker has the same cause. A flicker limited to one protected video may involve that playback path; a flicker visible in menus and at sign-in is more concerning.
Flicker decision path
- Only one site or video: test another browser context, disable extensions and try a different file or stream.
- Changes with brightness: record the brightness levels at which it starts or stops and include them in a support request.
- Visible at sign-in or startup: treat it as a likely display, cable, firmware or graphics-path issue.
- Built-in display only: use an external monitor to narrow the fault to the internal display assembly.
- Both displays affected: continue with ChromeOS updates, Diagnostics and manufacturer support rather than replacing the panel first.
Uneven brightness, bright corners and dark patches
Uneven brightness means one side, corner or strip is visibly brighter or darker than the rest of the panel. Check it with a full white page and a dark gray page at several brightness levels. View straight on and from normal working angles, because LCD viewing-angle behavior can make uniformity appear different off-axis.
Night Light must be off for this comparison. If the nonuniformity changes substantially with brightness or angle, settings and viewing conditions may be contributing. If the same bright or dark region remains at every level and angle, and appears in every app and at sign-in, suspect panel uniformity, the backlight or physical pressure/damage.

Do not press or twist the screen to make a patch disappear. Record photos at a fixed brightness and viewing angle, then contact the manufacturer if the issue is persistent. Software resets cannot correct a physically nonuniform backlight or panel.
Use ChromeOS Diagnostics before destructive resets
Chromebooks running ChromeOS 90 or later include a Diagnostics app. Open Settings > About ChromeOS > Diagnostics. The app can test hardware such as the CPU and memory and lets you save test details.
- Run the available tests while the display problem is reproducible.
- Save the test details and note the date, ChromeOS version and exact model.
- Repeat the display comparison with an external monitor if possible.
- If a hardware test fails, follow Google’s guidance to contact the Chromebook manufacturer.
A passed CPU or memory test does not prove the display panel is healthy; use it as one part of the isolation process. Photos or a short video showing the defect at sign-in, at a known brightness level and on both displays are often more useful to support than a description such as “screen looks weird.”

Hardware reset
Google advises trying a hard reset only after other fixes have failed. For most Chromebook models:
- Power off the Chromebook.
- Press and hold Refresh.
- Tap Power.
- Release Refresh when the Chromebook starts.
Model-specific instructions can differ. A hard reset may delete files in the Downloads folder, so copy important local files first. It is intended to reset hardware state; it does not repair a cracked panel, failed backlight or damaged cable.

Powerwash (factory reset)
Powerwash erases local user data, including Downloads. Back up files and confirm that you can sign in again before starting. The keyboard path is:
- Press Ctrl + Alt + Shift + R.
- Select Restart.
- Choose Powerwash, then continue through the confirmation screens.
On school or work devices, an administrator may control or require the reset. Powerwash is useful for isolating a corrupted user profile or software configuration, but it will not fix a defect that is visible before ChromeOS loads.
Recovery
Recovery removes and reinstalls ChromeOS and permanently erases the internal drive. Google recommends restarting and trying a factory reset before Recovery. Use Recovery only after backing up data and confirming that less destructive steps did not resolve a software-level problem. If the display artifact remains during startup or after a clean reinstall, seek manufacturer service instead of repeating Recovery.

When to contact the manufacturer
Arrange service when the problem survives Night Light, brightness, restart, extension isolation, Diagnostics and the external-monitor comparison, or when it appears before ChromeOS loads. Persistent ghosting, fixed bands, flicker at sign-in and permanent bright or dark regions are all reasons to stop troubleshooting by trial and error.
Prepare these details:
- Exact Chromebook model and serial information if requested by the manufacturer.
- ChromeOS version and the date the problem began.
- Whether the defect appears at startup, sign-in, in specific apps or everywhere.
- Brightness level, Night Light status and whether changing the lid angle changes it.
- Photos or video showing the artifact.
- Results from Diagnostics and the external-monitor comparison.
- Whether the Chromebook has suffered a drop, liquid exposure, pressure or a recent repair.
Support can then distinguish a panel or backlight replacement from a cable, firmware or mainboard investigation. Avoid opening the display assembly unless the manufacturer specifically directs a model-appropriate repair; connectors, panel part numbers and cable routing vary by Chromebook.
