Chromebook AUE Date: What Happens After It Expires

A Chromebook doesn't stop working at its AUE date, but automatic updates end. Here's how to check yours, what changes, and when to replace it.

When a Chromebook reaches its Auto Update Expiration (AUE) date, it stops receiving automatic software updates. It doesn’t stop working. Google says a working Chromebook can keep being used after that point, but it gets no further updates, and for managed devices policies may not work as intended. This guide covers how to find your date, what changes afterward, and when replacing the device makes sense.

How to check your Chromebook’s AUE date

The date belongs to the device model, not to the day you bought it. There are two reliable ways to find it.

On the Chromebook itself

  1. Select the time in the bottom-right corner.
  2. Open Settings → About ChromeOS → Additional details.
  3. Look under Update schedule for the line “This device will get automatic updates until [date].”

On a school- or work-managed Chromebook, this screen may instead say that updates are controlled by an administrator. In that case, ask your IT team. Google describes the screen in its guide to updating your Chromebook’s operating system.

In Google’s policy table

Find your manufacturer and exact model in the table on Google’s Auto Update policy page. This is the authoritative list. Dates for individual models can change, so check it again if you’re making a purchase decision.

Why a newly bought Chromebook can have less support left

Google’s policy gives ChromeOS devices 10 years of updates, counted from the platform release date. That is when the underlying hardware platform first shipped, not when you bought your unit. A Chromebook that has sat on shelves, or that uses an older platform, can therefore have fewer years left than its purchase date suggests. Don’t estimate by age. Check the model.

What actually happens after AUE

  • Updates stop. Google’s policy says updates cover the operating system, the browser and hardware support. After the final update, none of these are refreshed automatically.
  • The device still works. Google’s Use or upgrade an old Chromebook page says: “If your Chromebook is working well, you can keep using it.”
  • Managed devices lose guarantees. Google’s policy warns that after the final update, existing and future policies may not work as intended, and technical support is not provided.
  • Secure startup remains. The self-check performed when the Chromebook starts in secure mode continues after updates end. It is a built-in safeguard, not a substitute for ongoing software and security updates.

The sources don’t show that apps or websites stop working on the AUE date. The practical risk grows over time: browsers, sites and services increasingly assume current software, and any security flaws found later stay unpatched.

Extended updates for older Chromebooks

In a September 14, 2023 announcement, Google said the 10-year policy would begin rolling out in 2024. Devices released from 2021 onward get 10 years automatically. For older devices, Google wrote: “For Chromebooks released before 2021 and already in use, users and IT admins will have the option to extend automatic updates to 10 years from the platform’s release (after they receive their last automatic update).”

Google’s footnote cautions that some features and services may not be supported on eligible pre-2021 devices receiving extended updates. The opt-in is available only to eligible models, so confirm yours in the policy table first. Since the extension is counted from platform release, it can still end sooner than 10 years after you bought the device.

Keep using it or replace it?

Personal use

Google says you may keep a working device or upgrade. If you keep it, accept that it no longer gets security patches. That is a weaker position for banking, email and anything involving sensitive accounts. If it is only used for light, low-risk browsing, the risk is lower, though not zero. If your model is eligible for the extended-update opt-in, that is the first thing to try.

Schools and businesses

For organizations, the UK National Cyber Security Centre’s ChromeOS device security guidance recommends buying new devices after AUE because updates stop, policies may not work as intended, and technical support ceases. This guidance is aimed at enterprise security decisions. It doesn’t mean every personal Chromebook stops working on the date.

Google also reported in 2023 that more than 80% of the U.S. schools in its own survey repaired at least some Chromebooks in-house. That is a figure from Google’s survey, not an estimate for all schools. Repair can extend the hardware’s life, but it cannot extend the software’s support window.

Choosing a replacement

The key comparison is the exact model’s published update schedule. Before buying, find the model in Google’s Auto Update policy table and check how much support remains, rather than assuming a full 10 years from your purchase date. Price, performance and screen size are separate considerations that matter too, but they don’t change how long updates last.

For background on the process, the Chromium Projects documents its End of Life / Auto Update Expiration process. Per Google’s policy, platform component work and testing run on a roughly two-week cadence. That describes how the update pipeline works, not how often your device shows a visible update.
