To add a game controller over Bluetooth, put the controller into pairing mode, open Bluetooth settings on your phone, tablet or computer, let it scan, and select the controller’s name from the list. The sequence is the same almost everywhere. The button combination that starts pairing mode is not, because it depends on the controller model.
The pairing steps
- Check that both ends are compatible. The controller must support Bluetooth, and the device you are connecting to must support that controller. Apple says wireless Xbox, PlayStation and other Bluetooth game controllers can connect to iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, Mac and Apple Vision Pro. PlayStation lists Bluetooth and USB connections for its DualSense controller on supported Windows PC, Mac, Android and iOS devices, at listed operating-system versions or later. Check the current support page for your exact version.
- Charge the controller or put in fresh batteries. A weak battery is a common reason for a controller that will not enter pairing mode or drops out during setup.
- Put the controller into pairing mode. Look up your model’s manual or manufacturer support page for the exact button or switch. Some controllers use a dedicated pairing button, and others use a button combination. Do not borrow a combination from a different brand.
- Open Bluetooth settings on the host and turn Bluetooth on. Start a scan for nearby devices if it does not begin automatically.
- Select the controller’s name in the list of available devices. Android Help describes this exact step. Accept any pairing prompt the host shows.
- Test it in a game. A successful pairing only tells you the host and controller are connected.
Platform notes
Android
Android Help says to put the wireless controller in pairing mode, then choose its name from the available Bluetooth devices. Android also documents changing button and joystick assignments for a connected controller, which helps if a game maps inputs in a way you dislike.

iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, Mac and Apple Vision Pro
Apple publishes separate instructions for connecting a wireless game controller to each of these device families, and a PlayStation-specific article that covers the same families. Follow the page for your device rather than a general guide, since the menus differ.

PlayStation DualSense on other devices
PlayStation documents Bluetooth and USB connections to Windows PC, Mac, Android and iOS devices. It warns that controller support can vary by game, so some features may not work everywhere even when pairing succeeds.

Windows PC, Xbox and Nintendo Switch controllers
Windows uses the same pattern: pairing mode on the controller, then Bluetooth settings on the PC to add and select the device. Exact Xbox pairing controls vary by controller model, so use the manual for yours. For Nintendo Switch controllers, Nintendo’s retrieved guidance covers preparing them for the Switch, including charging and wired USB hub use. It does not establish that they pair with arbitrary Bluetooth hosts, so confirm support for your model and device before relying on it.
If the controller does not show up
- Confirm it is really in pairing mode. The usual cause is a controller that is only powered on. Pairing mode generally has to be started deliberately, and the controller’s light or indicator normally behaves differently while it is searching. Check your manual for what that looks like.
- Disconnect it from other devices. A controller still connected to a console, phone or PC may reconnect there instead of appearing as new. Turn it off, or put it back into pairing mode.
- Charge it. Then restart Bluetooth on the host and scan again.
- Check support for your model and system version. Not every controller works with every host. Reset procedures also differ by model, so use the manufacturer’s instructions.
Connected, but the game ignores it
Pairing and game support are separate. A game may not recognise the controller, may not support some buttons or features, or may need its own controller setting turned on. Check the game’s or platform’s controller documentation. On Android, review the button and joystick assignment settings in system settings.

Choosing a controller to buy
If yours is broken or incompatible, compare options on four points: support for your exact device and operating-system version, support in the specific games or services you play, whether it offers both Bluetooth and USB connections, and whether the features you want work on that device. The PlayStation DualSense is one documented example with listed supported platforms, but the same checks apply to any brand.
