A VR headset with a black screen and no logo usually falls into one of three cases: it has no power, it has power but won’t boot, or it is booting fine but the PC or console link isn’t delivering an image. The fix depends on which headset you own and how it connects, so start there. Button sequences and cable checks are not interchangeable between Meta Quest, PC-tethered headsets and PlayStation VR. A missing logo alone does not tell you the display panel or any other part has failed.
Step 1: Confirm the headset is actually powered
Check the model’s power indicator, whether it is charging, whether it plays a startup sound, and whether your PC software or console detects it. If there is no sign of power at all, follow the manufacturer’s no-power and charging guide for your exact model. The steps below assume the headset is powered but shows no image.

Don’t open the headset or attempt internal cable repairs based only on this symptom. The official guidance covers external connection checks, restarts and recovery, then service. It does not point to a universal internal repair.

Meta Quest 2: black screen at startup
These steps come from a Meta Community Manager’s reply on the Meta Community Forums. They are specific to Quest 2. Check Meta’s current instructions before applying them to other Quest models, as the forum reply has no exact publication date.

- Remove unsupported third-party accessories that could affect boot. That includes external battery packs and anything plugged into the USB-C port.
- Hold Power and Volume Down for 30 seconds, until you hear the boot-up sound.
- If that fails, hold Power and Volume Down until the boot screen appears.
- Use the volume buttons to highlight Boot Device and press Power.
- Highlight Yes and press Power again.
- If the screen is still black, contact Meta support.
Don’t start with a factory reset. It can erase local data and isn’t needed to find out whether a simpler recovery works. Do it only if current model-specific instructions or Meta support tell you to. Meta’s reply supports reboot, recovery and support escalation, not a guaranteed fix.
Valve Index: no display
Steam Support’s Index Headset FAQ says to check headset power, USB, DisplayPort and the main cable connections. Reseat each one, and confirm the display cable is plugged into the graphics card output rather than a motherboard port.

PS VR2 on PC: no image
Sony’s PlayStation VR2 support page lists these checks:
Recommended Free Tools
- Reconnect all cables. The display cable must comply with DisplayPort 1.4 or higher.
- Confirm the PC meets the minimum requirements.
- Enable Direct Mode in SteamVR’s Developer settings.
- Try a different USB port.
- Check the connection in the PlayStation VR2 app.
- Update your graphics drivers.
- Turn off both the PC and the headset, power on the PC first and the headset second, then launch SteamVR.
Sony specifies a separately sold DisplayPort 1.4 cable for the PC setup. Replacing one makes sense only if your PC has a suitable DisplayPort output and the current cable is missing, below spec or damaged. It isn’t a fix for a standalone or console-connected headset, and a new cable won’t cure a headset that is failing for another reason.

Original PlayStation VR: no image
Sony’s PlayStation VR troubleshooting guide recommends this order:
- Unplug and reconnect the headset cable.
- Bypass the headset connection cable by connecting the headset directly to the processor unit as a test.
- Verify the TV is on the correct input.
- Check the connection between headset and processor unit, and that the processor unit is powered.
- Make sure the connectors are clean.
If these checks don’t help, Sony advises repair service. These processor-unit steps do not apply to PS VR2.

When to stop
- If a Quest 2 recovery screen appears, complete the Boot Device selection and test again; if still black, go to Meta support.
- If a PC headset isn’t detected, work through cables, ports, software and drivers for that model before suspecting the headset.
- Stop before opening the headset, buying an unverified replacement part, or resetting repeatedly. The official sources don’t tie this symptom to one internal component.
- Once the model-specific checks fail, contact the manufacturer for support or repair.
