Firefox offers more documented ways to restore tabs: it can reopen the previous session at startup, restore it manually from History, recover recently closed tabs or windows, and show a recovery option after a crash or unexpected shutdown. Chrome documents a simpler startup option—“Continue where you left off”—that reopens pages from when Chrome was quit. These are differences in documented controls, not evidence that one browser restores sessions more reliably in every situation.
How Chrome and Firefox restore tabs
Both browsers provide a built-in way to reopen pages from a previous browsing session. The main distinction is what you can do if automatic restoration is not enough: Firefox documents separate manual and crash-recovery routes, while the cited Chrome guidance covers reopening pages when the browser starts.

Chrome: reopen pages when the browser starts
Turn on “Continue where you left off”
- Open Chrome on your computer.
- Select the three-dot menu, then choose Settings.
- Under On startup, select Continue where you left off.
Google describes this option as reopening the same pages that were open when Chrome was quit. It also says cookies and site data are saved, which can leave you signed in when those pages return. If you do not want that behavior, Google points to Chrome’s on-device site-data controls, including an option to delete data when all windows close. Google Chrome Help
The cited instructions are for Chrome on a computer. Google notes that Chromebook users at work or school may not be able to change startup settings if an administrator controls them.

Firefox: automatic, manual, and crash recovery
Restore the session automatically at startup
- Open Firefox and select the menu button.
- Choose Settings, then General.
- In the Home and startup page settings, enable Open previous windows and tabs.
With that option enabled, Firefox is configured to open the previous windows and tabs each time it starts. Mozilla also says tabs and windows should restore automatically after an update; if they do not, its guidance points to the recently closed recovery options. Mozilla Support
Restore a session or recently closed items manually
To bring back the previous session after Firefox has opened, use History > Restore Previous Session. For a smaller recovery, use the Recently Closed Tabs or Recently Closed Windows lists in History. Mozilla’s tab-restoration guide describes these routes. Mozilla Support

Mozilla says Firefox usually attempts to restore a session after a crash or unexpected shutdown, and may present a Restore Session page. “Usually” is not a guarantee: the outcome can depend on browser settings and session data. Mozilla’s troubleshooting guidance identifies clearing browsing history on close, extensions, or corrupt session data as possible reasons restoration may fail. Mozilla Support

Which browser should you choose?
- Choose Firefox if you want more built-in recovery routes. Its documented controls include automatic startup restoration, restoring the previous session from History, recovering recently closed tabs and windows, and a crash-recovery flow.
- Chrome can suit you if automatic reopening is enough. Its documented startup setting reopens pages from when Chrome was quit.
- Do not treat either feature as a guaranteed backup. The cited official guidance does not provide a controlled comparison of session-restoration reliability, nor does it promise recovery under every crash, shutdown, profile, policy, or cleanup condition.
Privacy and protecting important tabs
Restored pages can carry privacy implications on a shared computer. Chrome’s startup option saves site data, and Mozilla warns that restored Firefox sessions may leave users signed in. Firefox’s regular session restore excludes private windows; it is not a way to recover private browsing sessions. Google Chrome Help · Mozilla Support
For tabs you cannot afford to lose, save them separately—for example, as bookmarks—rather than relying on session restoration as the only copy.
