Start with the device’s exact brand and model or product number, then use the manufacturer’s support page or parts lookup to find a compatible replacement. Before buying, confirm the connector and the electrical requirements: a plug that fits is not necessarily safe or compatible. For USB-C, verify that the device supports charging over USB-C and that the charger and cable meet its power needs.
1. Identify the exact device
Look for the brand and model or product number on the device, its label, packaging, or system information. A broad name such as a product family may not be enough; different versions can require different accessories.

Search the manufacturer’s official support documentation or parts store using that exact identifier. HP, for example, directs notebook owners to enter the product number to find compatible adapters: HP’s adapter identification guidance. A model-specific listing is more useful than a generic listing that only describes a connector.

2. Check connector fit and electrical requirements
For a traditional DC adapter, compare the device’s required voltage and wattage with the replacement’s stated output, and confirm the connector’s type and size. Check any polarity marking on a barrel-style connector against the device maker’s requirements; there is no single polarity rule that applies to every device.

Follow the manufacturer’s guidance for the exact model. HP says to match the device’s voltage and wattage requirements and notes that an underpowered adapter can affect charging or performance. HP’s adapter guidance Dell says to match the connector and use a replacement with wattage equal to or greater than the original; that is Dell product guidance, not a universal rule that supersedes another maker’s requirements. Do not infer electrical compatibility from a plug that physically fits. If the device’s requirements or the candidate adapter’s output are unclear, use the manufacturer’s model-specific documentation rather than guessing.

3. For USB-C, verify charging support, power, and cable capability
USB-C describes the connector shape, not every function a device or cable supports. Confirm that your device accepts charging over USB-C, then check the required charging power and whether the cable is rated for the needed power. 4. Compare replacement candidates before buying
Use the exact model or product number to compare candidates. Check these details in the compatibility listing and product specifications:
- Model compatibility: Does the listing explicitly include your exact model or product number?
- Connector: Does it match the device’s required connector and, for a DC barrel plug, its size and polarity requirements?
- Electrical output: Does the adapter meet the device maker’s voltage and wattage requirements, or, for USB-C, the required charging and Power Delivery capabilities?
- Cable capability: If the cable is separate, does it support the required charging power and any needed data transfer?
- Source: Is it sold by the manufacturer or an authorized parts channel, with compatibility information you can verify?
- Package contents: Is the AC power cord included, or is it sold separately? Package contents vary by product and seller.
Prefer the manufacturer’s compatibility listing when available. Stock and regional parts availability can change, so a listing for the same product family is not a substitute for confirming your model.

5. Stop using damaged accessories
Do not keep using a cable or adapter with visible wear, damaged prongs, a damaged casing, or signs that it fails to power the device. Apple identifies these as warning signs for its products and says damaged cables and adapters should no longer be used. Follow the relevant device maker’s safety guidance for your equipment. If you cannot identify a compatible replacement
Do not buy by connector shape alone. Recheck the product number on the device or in its system information, consult the manufacturer’s support or parts channel, and ask support to confirm the exact replacement part number if the listing is ambiguous. Without the device model, no single replacement can be identified reliably.
