You can play a Doom-style game in a browser without manually installing a game or downloading a separate executable. The main options are a browser service that runs DOS emulation through WebAssembly, or a Doom engine port compiled to WebAssembly. One documented example, doom-web, pairs Chocolate Doom with Freedoom replacement game data; it says to open the page, tap “TAP TO START,” and play. This is not an official copy of id Software’s commercial DOOM.
“No download” means no manual install—not zero network use. The doom-web project says its first load is about 35 MB, after which the browser cache serves the files.

Choose a browser-play route
These approaches differ in what the webpage runs and where its game data comes from. A browser game can load and run without a local installation while still transferring code and data to your device.
| Route | What runs in the browser | Game data | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| DOS emulation | A DOSBox or DOSBox-X backend compiled to WebAssembly. DOS.Zone describes its regular Chrome path this way. | Depends on the service; do not assume the source or episode without checking. | Whether it starts without a file from you, what version or episode it offers, and whether it explains where the game data comes from. |
| Doom engine port | A Doom engine such as Chocolate Doom or PrBoom+ compiled to WebAssembly. | Freedoom replacement data may be bundled, or the port may require a WAD supplied by you. | Whether you must provide a file, what data is included, which controls work, and how the project explains licensing. |
| Third-party instant-play service | The operator’s browser implementation, potentially using DOS emulation. | Specific to the service and not independently verified here. | Check what episode and data it serves; an instant-play offer does not establish official authorization. |
A browser port using Freedoom
The doom-web project documents a browser flow built around Chocolate Doom and Freedoom Phase 1 data. Its README says: “Open it, tap TAP TO START, and play.” That is the project’s description of its own flow, not an endorsement or statement from id Software. The repository identifies the bundled Freedoom data as version 0.13.0; that describes this project’s bundle, not the latest Freedoom release.

The project says its first load is about 35 MB. That is a project-specific figure, not an independent measurement or a guarantee for every visit, browser, or connection.
DOSBox-based services
DOS.Zone describes its regular Chrome route as a WebAssembly DOSBox/DOSBox-X backend. The existence of an emulator does not tell you whether the service includes game data, which episode it runs, or whether you need to supply an image or other file. Check those details on the service itself before starting.

Desktop98 describes a shareware episode delivered through js-dos and DOSBox WebAssembly. That is the operator’s description; it has not been independently verified here, so treat the episode, availability, and hosting claims accordingly.
Ports that ask for a WAD
“Runs in your browser” does not necessarily mean “ready to play with no files.” The Dwasm project and fo-doom describe workflows involving a WAD supplied by the player. If you want to avoid downloading or providing game files, choose an option that clearly states what data it bundles.

- Doom The Classics Collection physical game for Nintendo Swith.
- This includes three classic DOOM games preserved on one cartridge - DOOM, DOOM II, and DOOM 3! No game downloads required.
- Includes a full-color manual and reversible cover art.
Why the engine and game data are separate
A Doom engine is the software that interprets and runs the game. A WAD contains game data. The fact that an engine is open source does not, by itself, grant permission to distribute commercial DOOM data with it.
Chocolate Doom says it is distributed under GPLv2 and aims to behave closely to the original DOS game. That describes the engine, not the rights to any particular WAD. The doom-web README identifies its engine as GPLv2 Chocolate Doom and its game data as BSD-licensed Freedoom Phase 1. It says the project contains no id Software content and does not include commercial DOOM WADs. Freedoom is therefore a replacement-data route for a Doom-style browser game, not the original commercial game files.
Rank #4
- DOOM + DOOM II on a region-free physical cartridge.
- Includes: DOOM, DOOM II, TNT: Evilution, The Plutonia Experiment, Master Levels for DOOM II, No Rest for the Living, Sigil & Sigil II, Legacy of Rust (a new episode created in collaboration by id Software, Nightdive Studios and MachineGames).
- A new Deathmatch map pack featuring 25 maps
- A total of 187 mission maps and 43 deathmatch maps in DOOM + DOOM II.
The Dwasm project cautions against hosting commercial titles without permission and offers its own interpretation of shareware terms. That repository is not an authoritative legal ruling. The available information does not establish that every third-party browser service is authorized—or unauthorized—to host the material it offers.

- A Relentless Campaign: There is no taking cover or stopping to regenerate health as you beat back Hell's raging demon hordes
- Return of id Multiplayer: Dominate your opponents in DOOM's signature, fast-paced arena-style combat
- Near-Limitless Gameplay: DOOM SnapMap - A powerful, but easy-to-use game and level editor that allows for limitless gameplay experiences on every platform
- Required files: Does it start immediately, or ask you to upload or locate a WAD, disk image, or archive?
- Game-data source: Does the page identify Freedoom, a shareware episode, or another source, or leave the contents unexplained?
- Controls: Does it explain keyboard, touch, or controller input, and do those controls work on your device?
- Browser support: Does the operator specify a supported browser or device? Do not assume desktop behavior carries over to a phone.
- Hosting explanation: Does the operator explain what it distributes and the basis for doing so? A game starting in the browser is not proof of official authorization.
- Network load: Is a substantial first load expected? The doom-web project’s approximately 35 MB figure applies to that project, not to browser Doom options generally.
