Choose RustDesk when open source, self-hosting, or a mixed-device fleet matters. Choose Windows RDP for a managed Windows environment where native display and peripheral redirection are worth designing a VPN or Remote Desktop Gateway around.
The important difference is not a simplistic “secure versus insecure” label. These tools use different network paths, identity controls, host requirements, and administration models.

Start with the network model
Chrome Remote Desktop uses a brokered internet connection
Chrome Remote Desktop registers a Mac, Windows, or Linux host with Google. You select that computer from remotedesktop.google.com/access and enter its PIN. Google says remote sessions are fully encrypted. Because the service is internet-based, the host needs outbound connectivity; Google lists outbound UDP, inbound UDP responses, TCP 443, and TCP/UDP 3478 (STUN) among traffic that may need to be allowed. Work or school administrators can restrict its use.

For one-off help, the host generates a code instead of configuring unattended access. The person sharing the screen must approve the connection. Google says the code works once and asks for confirmation every 30 minutes, which is a better fit for support than leaving a permanent unattended login enabled.

RustDesk brokers outbound connections and can be self-hosted
RustDesk clients use rendezvous and relay services to establish a peer-to-peer connection when possible, rather than requiring you to forward a port to every endpoint. Its documented feature set covers Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, and the web. RustDesk describes peer-to-peer connections with end-to-end encryption based on NaCl.
Self-hosting changes who operates the control plane. The free, open-source Server OSS deployment uses the hbbs rendezvous role and hbbr relay role, with manual deployment and community support. Server Pro adds a web console, API, OIDC, LDAP, two-factor authentication, device management, access control, and multi-relay management. Self-hosting keeps IDs and relay infrastructure on systems you manage, but it does not remove infrastructure exposure: you still have to publish the documented server ports, restrict access, monitor logs, and patch the services.

RDP is a Windows protocol that needs a network design
Remote Desktop Protocol is built into Windows, and an enabled host listens for inbound TCP 3389 connections. That is convenient on a trusted LAN, but internet access normally requires a VPN, an appropriately configured Remote Desktop Gateway, or router forwarding. Do not publish an unprotected 3389 listener to the public internet. If you use RDP remotely, require Network Level Authentication and put the host behind a VPN or gateway under your control.

For a Windows Home machine, first verify that the edition includes Remote Desktop hosting. Hosting is edition-dependent; if the Remote Desktop setting is unavailable, use Chrome Remote Desktop or RustDesk instead of trying to expose a replacement port.

Security is more than encryption
Chrome Remote Desktop
Google’s published statement is that “all remote desktop sessions are fully encrypted.” That protects the session in transit, but your practical security still depends on the Google account protecting the host list, the strength and uniqueness of the PIN, and who can approve support requests. Remove computers you no longer use and avoid sharing an unattended PIN with other people.
RustDesk
RustDesk publishes client and server code and documents NaCl-based end-to-end encryption. Those properties make it attractive when you need to inspect or operate the infrastructure yourself. They also make patching, firewall rules, account policy, and server backups your responsibility. Server Pro’s OIDC, LDAP, 2FA, device controls, and access rules are aimed at organizations that need central governance rather than a single personal connection.

RDP
RDP is a proprietary Microsoft protocol. Its security outcome depends heavily on authentication and network controls: use current clients, strong individual accounts, Network Level Authentication, least-privilege access, and a VPN or Remote Desktop Gateway for off-site connections. Treat encryption as one layer, not permission to expose the service directly.
Features that matter after you connect
Chrome Remote Desktop is oriented toward accessing applications and files with minimal setup. It is a strong choice when the requirement is “reach my desktop from a browser or phone,” not specialized device redirection.

RustDesk advertises multiple codecs and broad client support, making it flexible for mixed operating systems. Its Windows client can run without an administrative installation and can elevate privileges when required, which helps with support sessions where installing software system-wide is undesirable.
Windows MSTSC has the richest documented redirection in this comparison: external and multiple monitors, clipboard transfer, USB, and serial devices. Microsoft’s client matrix shows that these capabilities differ across macOS, mobile, Chrome OS, and browser clients. Confirm the specific client’s feature row before promising a peripheral workflow.
Setup paths and the decisions they require
Set up Chrome Remote Desktop for personal access
- On the computer you will control, open remotedesktop.google.com/access and choose the remote-access setup for your operating system.
- Register the host, choose a recognizable name, and create a strong PIN that is not reused elsewhere.
- From another computer or the mobile app, select the registered host and enter the PIN.
- For temporary assistance, use the support flow instead: generate a one-time code, have the host approve the connection, and end the session when the task is complete.
Deploy RustDesk without or with your own servers
- Install the RustDesk client on the host and the device you will use to connect, choosing the appropriate Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, or web client.
- For a small personal setup, use the documented public rendezvous and relay path, then protect device IDs and access credentials.
- For control over the service, deploy Server OSS with
hbbsandhbbr, expose only the required ports, and keep both roles patched. - For centralized identity and policy, evaluate Server Pro’s OIDC or LDAP integration, 2FA, device management, access control, and multi-relay features before onboarding users.
Publish RDP safely
- Confirm that the Windows edition supports incoming Remote Desktop connections and enable it in the system’s Remote Desktop settings.
- Create a dedicated, least-privilege account for remote work and require Network Level Authentication.
- For off-site access, connect through a VPN or Remote Desktop Gateway. Do not substitute a simple router rule that forwards public TCP 3389 to the PC.
- Choose the client deliberately: use Windows MSTSC when you need its documented monitor, clipboard, USB, or serial redirection, and verify feature limitations on other platforms.

Hardening checklist
- Use unique, strong account credentials and enable multi-factor authentication wherever the service or identity provider supports it.
- Keep host and client software current; remove stale devices and unused accounts.
- Grant remote users only the privileges they need, and separate support access from permanent unattended access.
- For RDP, require Network Level Authentication and use a VPN or Remote Desktop Gateway instead of public 3389 forwarding.
- For RustDesk self-hosting, restrict rendezvous and relay ports, monitor the server, back up configuration securely, and patch both
hbbsandhbbr. - Review organization policies: managed Google accounts can block Chrome Remote Desktop, and enterprise RustDesk deployments need an explicit identity and device-control policy.
Bottom line
There is no universal winner. Chrome Remote Desktop is the sensible default for a personal computer and occasional support. RustDesk is the stronger choice when open source, self-hosting, or broad platform coverage outweighs the maintenance burden. Windows RDP remains the best-native option inside a controlled Windows environment, but remote internet access must be engineered through a VPN or Remote Desktop Gateway rather than an exposed 3389 port.
