Choose Chrome Headless for a quick, one-off screenshot at a known viewport; choose Playwright when captures belong in a repeatable script, browser test, or visual-regression workflow. This is a workflow recommendation, not a claim that one is faster or more accurate in India: the official documentation cited here does not establish an India-specific winner.
They are not two competing browsers. Chrome Headless runs Chrome without a visible interface; Playwright is an automation and testing library that can drive Chromium and other browsers. Playwright can also be configured to launch branded Chrome. Which setup fits depends on whether you need a direct command or a reusable browser-automation workflow.

Which should you use for website screenshots?
| Your requirement | Start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Capture one page from a shell or script at a specified viewport | Chrome Headless | Chrome’s --screenshot and --window-size flags directly cover this job; --timeout can bound the wait before capture. Chrome command-line reference |
| Navigate through steps, reuse setup, or capture several page states | Playwright | Its page API supports navigation and screenshots within a browser automation script. Playwright library documentation |
| Compare screenshots against committed baselines | Playwright Test | toHaveScreenshot() creates reference images and checks later runs against them. Playwright visual comparisons |
| Test across browser engines | Playwright | Playwright projects support Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit, as well as supported branded Chrome and Edge channels. Playwright browsers |
| Match the behavior of branded Chrome | Chrome itself, or Playwright configured for its chrome channel |
Playwright’s bundled Chromium and branded Chrome are different browser choices. Use the one that matches the target you need to represent. Playwright browser channels |
For India-based developers, the same choice applies: select by workflow, target browser, and where the capture will execute—not by an assumed local speed advantage. The cited official material does not publish an India-specific comparison of speed, reliability, cost, or screenshot accuracy.

chrome --headless --screenshot=page.png --window-size=1440,900 --timeout=10000 https://example.com
On systems where the executable is named differently or is not on your PATH, use the path to your Chrome executable in place of chrome. The command writes page.png to the current directory. Chrome documents --screenshot for saving a page capture and notes that it is especially useful with --window-size. --timeout specifies a maximum wait before capture; it does not guarantee that every site’s dynamic content or delayed assets are ready. See Chrome’s command-line options.
Adjust capture timing when a page is dynamic
If the page needs more time, increase the timeout and check the resulting image. Chrome also documents --virtual-time-budget for virtual-time control. These flags give a simple command more control over timing, but they cannot determine whether a particular application has finished rendering the content you care about. Validate the capture against the page’s behavior rather than assuming a fixed wait fits every site.
What this method does—and does not—provide
The CLI approach is direct: invoke Chrome with a URL, viewport, and capture settings. It is not by itself a test framework for coordinating multi-step interactions or maintaining screenshot baselines. If you need those capabilities, use browser automation such as Playwright.
Use Playwright for repeatable captures
The following Node.js example launches Playwright’s Chromium, opens a page, navigates to a URL, saves a full-page screenshot, and closes the browser. Install the package and its browser first:

npm init -y
npm install -D playwright

Save this as capture.js and run it with node capture.js:
const { chromium } = require('playwright');
(async () => {
const browser = await chromium.launch();
try {
const page = await browser.newPage({ viewport: { width: 1440, height: 900 } });
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'load', timeout: 30000 });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();

Install browsers and system dependencies for CI
Playwright browser binaries are version-coupled to Playwright releases. Install the browser binaries for the installed package, and repeat the install after updating Playwright. For a CI environment that needs browser system dependencies, Playwright documents:

Use a branded browser when that is the target
Playwright can use its bundled open-source Chromium or supported branded Chrome and Edge channels. Branded-browser runs can matter when testing against public stable browser channels or codec-dependent behavior; enterprise browser policies may also affect automation. If the site must match current Chrome behavior, configure the browser choice deliberately instead of treating bundled Chromium as identical to branded Chrome. Browser channels and guidance.
Compare screenshots with Playwright Test
For visual regression checks, Playwright Test’s toHaveScreenshot() assertion captures a reference image on the initial run and compares subsequent runs against it. A minimal test looks like this:
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('homepage visual snapshot', async ({ page }) => {
await page.setViewportSize({ width: 1440, height: 900 });
await page.goto('https://example.com');
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('homepage.png', { fullPage: true });
});

Screenshot diffs can change with the operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Playwright recommends running comparisons in the same environment used to generate the baseline; platform and browser differences may call for distinct expected snapshots. Pin and control the environment used by your CI and baseline-generation process, and update reference images intentionally when the rendered result is meant to change. Headless Chrome and Playwright do not always mean the same rendering mode
Chrome’s current Headless mode runs without a visible UI while sharing Chrome’s code. Since Chrome 132.0.6793.0, the older Headless implementation is available as a separate chrome-headless-shell binary. Chrome Headless mode.
Playwright documents a regular Chromium build and a separate Chromium headless shell for its default headless mode. Its newer headless mode can be selected with the chromium channel; the documentation notes that Chrome and Edge’s newer mode differs from the headless shell and may behave differently in some cases. Therefore, “headless” alone is not a sufficient description of the browser build: record and use the mode that matches the behavior you need. Playwright headless modes.
What being in India changes
The official documentation cited here does not establish that Chrome Headless or Playwright is faster, more reliable, cheaper, or more accurate specifically in India. It also does not identify a browser-market advantage for either approach. Avoid choosing on the basis of an India-specific performance claim unless you have measurements from the infrastructure and sites relevant to your own work.
Before standardizing a workflow, decide where captures run—on a developer workstation, a CI runner, or a hosted service—and specify the operating system, browser build, viewport, and whether desktop, mobile-sized, or cross-browser output matters. Those choices determine what environment a screenshot represents; Playwright’s documented rendering caveats make consistency especially important when comparing images.
