Use Chrome DevTools’ full-size screenshot to capture a page’s current rendered state in one tall image. Use scroll, wait, and capture when scrolling reveals or changes the content you need. For a record of visual changes over time, use DevTools’ Network or Performance screenshot timelines instead. Full-size capture does not guarantee that a site’s scroll-triggered content has loaded.
Choose by the state you need to capture
| Your goal | Best fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| One tall image of the page as it is currently rendered | Device Mode full-size screenshot | Captures beyond the visible viewport without requiring you to scroll through the page first. It does not promise to trigger every scroll-dependent behavior. Chrome DevTools documentation |
| Content that loads, appears, or changes as you scroll | Scroll, wait, then capture | Lets the page respond to scrolling before you record the relevant state. Recorder can make scroll and wait steps repeatable. Recorder features reference |
| How a page changes during loading or while it runs | Network or Performance screenshot timeline | Records visual states over time rather than combining the page into a single tall image. Network activity documentation and Performance features reference |
| Programmatic capture with configurable settings | Chrome DevTools Protocol or Chrome Headless, followed by verification | These offer capture controls, but settings such as a timeout or capture beyond the viewport do not themselves scroll the page or prove that dynamic content appeared. Take a full-size screenshot in DevTools
- Open the page in Chrome and open DevTools.
- Turn on Device Mode using the device toolbar button in DevTools.
- Open the Device Mode options menu and choose Capture full size screenshot. This differs from the ordinary screenshot option, which captures only the visible viewport. The full-size option is documented in Chrome’s Device Mode guide.
- Open the resulting image and compare it with the live page, particularly at sections that depend on scrolling, animation, or an inner scrolling panel.
This is the simplest choice when the page’s current rendered state already contains the material you want. It is not a substitute for scrolling through a page when that action triggers loading or changes state.

Scroll and wait for scroll-dependent content
For an infinite feed, lazy-loaded sections, scroll-triggered animations, or content inside an interactive page, move through the relevant area and wait for the intended state before capturing it. A single full-size screenshot may not cause the page to behave as though a visitor scrolled through it.
- Identify the section or state you need, and determine whether the main page or an inner panel is the scrolling area.
- Scroll a manageable distance through that area.
- Wait for the specific content or state to appear. If repeatability matters, use Chrome DevTools Recorder: its documented actions include scrolling and waiting for an element or JavaScript expression. Recorder features reference
- Capture after the page reaches the state you want. Repeat the scroll-and-wait sequence for each relevant section or state.
- Inspect the images against the live page. Check for missing content, stale sections, or states that changed between captures.
Recorder’s scroll and wait steps support a reproducible sequence, but Chrome’s documentation does not claim that they handle every site or every type of dynamic content.

Use a timeline when the question is about change over time
A full-page image shows a page state, not the sequence of visual events that produced it. To inspect how a page looks during loading, use screenshot capture in the DevTools Network panel. To record frames while a page runs, use the Performance panel’s screenshot capture during a performance recording. See Chrome’s Network activity documentation and Performance features reference.
Automate capture with CDP or Chrome Headless
Chrome DevTools Protocol
CDP’s Page.captureScreenshot method supports image format, a clipped region, and the captureBeyondViewport parameter. Its documented default is false. These settings control what is captured; they do not trigger scrolling or establish that scroll-dependent content has loaded. Consult the Page.captureScreenshot documentation for the method’s current parameters.

Chrome Headless
Chrome Headless can save a screenshot and accepts a window size. Its --timeout option sets a bound on how long it waits before capture, even if the page is still loading. A timeout is a timing bound, not a guarantee that a page is ready; a window size is not a scroll action. Verify the captured result when the page has lazy loading, feeds, animations, or scroll-triggered behavior. The supported command-line options are documented in the Chrome Headless reference.

- Compare visible sections of the image with the live page for missing or stale content.
- For feeds and lazy-loaded sections, check whether the page needed a scroll action before those sections appeared.
- For nested scroll areas, make sure you scrolled the panel that owns the content rather than only the outer page.
- For animations or changing interfaces, decide whether you need one chosen state or a timeline; a tall screenshot cannot represent every moment.
- For scripted capture, verify the rendered result separately from the capture settings. The documented controls do not guarantee that a particular site’s dynamic behavior was triggered.

Can a full-size screenshot trigger lazy-loaded images?
Not reliably. Check the captured image; if scrolling is needed to load the images, scroll through the page and wait before capturing.

Which Chrome method records several visual states?
Use screenshot capture in the Network panel during loading or in the Performance panel during a recording, rather than relying on a single tall screenshot.
