A chrome door viewer lets you see who is outside without opening the door. Choose one by matching its finish, door-thickness range and bore size to your door; viewing angle and privacy-cover options also vary by model. A viewer can inform your decision about opening the door, but it does not guarantee safety or prevent burglary.
What a chrome door viewer can—and cannot—do
A door viewer, also called a peephole or door eye, gives an occupant a view of the area immediately outside while the door stays closed. ASSA ABLOY describes its standard viewer as letting the user see who is on the other side before opening the door. That is a practical security aid, not proof that a viewer prevents crime or makes a doorway safe.

Performance depends on the exact viewer, installation and conditions at the doorway. A listed viewing angle is a manufacturer specification, not a measure of image clarity or a guarantee that every visitor will be visible.
Check door thickness and hole size first
Before selecting a model, measure the door thickness and the diameter of the existing hole, or identify the bore size required if the door has not been drilled. These are separate fit checks: a viewer can suit the door’s thickness yet still require a different opening.

Do not assume the existing hole can be reused just because a new viewer is described as a standard size. Compare the required bore with the actual opening and follow the instructions for the exact model; enlarging a hole or adapting a door may require a qualified installer.
Compare the finish, optics and construction
Match the chrome finish to nearby hardware
Product listings use different finish names, including polished chrome, bright chrome and satin chrome. Those labels are not interchangeable descriptions of appearance: check the exact model’s finish and, where possible, compare a product image or sample with the door handle and other hardware.

Regional availability matters. ASSA ABLOY’s Ireland page lists the AA77CP in polished chrome with a glass lens; that does not establish availability in other markets. New Zealand product pages for ASSA ABLOY and Yale list the MC96 in satin chrome. Verify the current local product page and instructions rather than assuming a model or finish is sold in your region.

Treat viewing angles as specifications, not a quality ranking
Published angle claims differ: Rockwood describes a 190-degree field of view, PRO-LOK lists a 190-degree viewer, and the MiniScope catalog describes a 200-degree view. The PEEKO sheet gives a range of 140–180 degrees. These figures come from product descriptions, not an independent side-by-side image-quality test. Check the exact model’s optical design and consider whether its view suits the position and layout of your doorway.

Check what the body and lens are made of
Materials are model-specific. Rockwood describes its viewers as brass; PRO-LOK lists solid brass construction and a scratch-resistant wide-angle lens; ASSA ABLOY’s AA77CP page specifies a glass lens. Compare the material details on the product page and current instructions for the exact item rather than inferring construction from its chrome-colored finish.
Decide whether you need a privacy cover
A cover can block the view through a viewer from inside when it is not in use. Confirm whether it is built into the viewer or must be bought separately, and check fit: covers may be limited to particular viewer diameters.

The MiniScope catalog says its model includes a privacy cover. Privacy Logic describes the SPEYEGUARD fixed cover in satin, polished and brushed chrome, for standard 3/8- and 5/8-inch viewers, installed over an existing viewer. When a digital viewer is a different option

Buyer’s checklist
- Measure the door’s thickness and the existing hole diameter.
- Confirm the exact model supports both measurements and identify any required extension parts or installation changes in its current instructions.
- Check the stated viewing angle and optical design without treating the angle alone as an image-quality verdict.
- Match the precise chrome finish name and appearance to nearby hardware.
- Verify whether a privacy cover is included or whether a compatible cover is available.
- Confirm regional availability and any certification claims directly with the manufacturer; older catalog details may not reflect current status.
