There is no single objectively best true crime podcast: the right pick depends on whether you want a reported investigation, a chronological case narrative, a conversational show, or an unresolved disappearance. This editorial shortlist covers ten established programs across those styles. It is a guide, not a ranked countdown, and listening availability can vary by country.

Choose by the kind of true crime you want

The ten recommendations below were selected by Quartz for track record, production quality, and continued relevance. Each is a different fit; popularity alone does not establish a show’s accuracy, and a podcast is not a substitute for checking underlying records.

For a story that unfolds over a season

Serial is the starting point for narrative reporting that follows uncertainty as it develops. Its first season is a 12-episode, 2014 re-examination of the 1999 killing of Hae Min Lee and Adnan Syed’s conviction. The episodes reflect reporting at the time; later legal developments mean listeners should not treat the season as a statement of current case status. Quartz includes the show in its 2026 selection.

In the Dark is better suited to listeners who want investigative journalism about the criminal justice system and institutional failures. Its reporting on the Curtis Flowers prosecution is a prominent example; consult court records for current legal developments rather than relying on podcast descriptions alone. Quartz recommends it for its reporting and focus.

For a case in one sitting or a deep chronological account

Crime Junkie offers tightly structured, usually single-episode case coverage and a large back catalog. Quartz notes past criticism over sourcing and attribution, so listeners who want to assess claims should follow citations to their original sources rather than treating the narration as the final word.

Casefile True Crime suits listeners who prefer host-light, chronological narration and longer, research-dense cases. Its catalog covers cases from multiple regions, according to Quartz.

For host conversation and a looser tone

My Favorite Murder pairs two-host conversation and humor with researched cases. Choose it for an informal listening style, not for a strictly chronological investigative documentary.

Morbid is another conversational option, mixing true crime with paranormal and related subjects. Apple lists it in its True Crime category. Category listings are a way to locate shows, not an endorsement or quality ranking.

For broadcast reporting and an extensive archive

Dateline NBC brings a broadcast-reporting style, interviews, and a substantial archive that includes audio-only series. It is a natural pick if you like reported segments and a familiar news-magazine format.

For cold cases and unresolved disappearances

Up and Vanished follows a developing cold-case investigation and explores the relationship between podcast attention and police work. Coverage of unresolved cases can amplify unproven theories and put pressure on families; approach speculation carefully and distinguish it from verified information.

Someone Knows Something focuses on fieldwork, family interviews, and unresolved disappearances. CBC maintains an archive of the series, making it a strong option for listeners interested in on-the-ground reporting.

For medical misconduct

Dr. Death investigates medical misconduct and failures of institutional oversight rather than conventional police cases. It may fit listeners interested in how organizations respond to harm as much as the criminal conduct itself.

Where to listen

Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and iHeartRadio are major destinations named for the Quartz recommendations. Some shows also stream on a producer’s site or a public broadcaster’s app. Search the exact show title in your preferred app, then check its current show page: catalogs and territorial availability change, and not every episode is necessarily free.

For CBC programming, look for Someone Knows Something in the CBC archive. UK listeners can also find BBC Radio 4 and BBC Sounds investigative series such as Intrigue: To Catch a King, which The Week recommends; it is an additional example, not one of Quartz’s ten selections. Apple Podcasts’ UK True Crime category is a changing country-specific catalog, with weekly programs, complete series, and serialized shows.

Some publishers offer paid tiers with bonus or ad-free episodes. ABC’s announcement of 20/20 True Crime+ described an Apple Podcasts subscription with ad-free listening, early access, exclusive material, archival shows, and subscriber Q&As, alongside free trailers and public-feed episodes. At announcement, the terms were a seven-day trial, $2.99 per month, or $29.99 per year; those are announcement-time prices, not a guarantee of the current offer. Check the listing for current terms before subscribing.

A quick way to choose your first episode

  • Want reporting that changes your understanding over time? Try Serial or In the Dark.
  • Prefer a contained case or narrated chronology? Start with Crime Junkie or Casefile True Crime, keeping sourcing in mind when assessing claims.
  • Want hosts to guide the conversation? Try My Favorite Murder or Morbid.
  • Interested in a particular subject? Choose Dr. Death for medical misconduct, Up and Vanished for cold-case attention, or Someone Knows Something for unresolved disappearances and family reporting.
  • Prefer interviews and a familiar broadcast format? Browse the Dateline NBC archive.

Before settling in, check the episode description and content warnings if available. True crime can involve violence, loss, and unresolved grief; the subject matter and presentation style matter as much as the format.

What the popularity numbers do—and do not—say

Pew Research Center reported in 2023 that 24% of podcasts in its analyzed top-ranked sample were categorized as true crime. The sample consisted of 451 podcasts appearing in the top 300 in average U.S. daily rankings on Spotify and Apple Podcasts from April 1 through September 2022. It describes that historical, ranked sample—not the current share of all podcasts or listeners.

The recommendations here are editorial choices, not the result of a named audience survey or a comparative listening test establishing one universal winner. Use them to find a format that suits you, then judge individual episodes by their sourcing, reporting, and care with people affected by the cases.
