Short answer: Start with AI Mode in Chrome when you have an open-ended question, need to compare options, or want to explore several sources with follow-up questions. Use Gemini in Chrome’s side panel when a page is already open and you want that page—or up to 10 tabs—to be summarized, explained, compared, or turned into a recommendation. Open Gemini in a normal browser tab when you want a clean, independent chat that is not tied to Chrome’s current pages.
Those are three related but different experiences. None has been shown in Google’s published material to be universally more accurate or faster than the others; the practical winner depends on where your information starts and whether you need web discovery or page-grounded help.

First, separate the three Gemini experiences
The wording around Chrome AI can be confusing because Google uses both “AI Mode” and “Gemini” for features that appear in similar places. For everyday searches, distinguish these interfaces before choosing one:

- AI Mode in Chrome: a search-first experience for exploring a question, asking follow-ups, comparing possibilities, and using multimodal context. It can work across recent Chrome tabs and combine tabs, images, and files.
- Gemini in Chrome’s side panel: a page-first assistant built into Chrome. It uses the current tab by default and can include as many as 10 tabs that you share directly.
- Gemini in a browser tab: the standalone web app at
gemini.google.com. It is a general chat that can be opened in Chrome or another browser, but it does not have the same direct Chrome page-sharing or Live integration.
The first two are Chrome-integrated tools. The third is the regular Gemini website, not a hidden version of the side panel.

What AI Mode in Chrome is best at
Google announced AI Mode in Chrome on April 16, 2026, describing it as help while exploring the web “without switching tabs.” Its design starts with a question rather than a particular article. You can ask for an explanation, a comparison, or a line of inquiry and continue with follow-up questions instead of submitting a series of disconnected searches.
Google’s AI Mode documentation describes support for deeper follow-up questions, advanced reasoning, multimodal input, and comparison-oriented queries. In practical terms, that makes it a useful first stop for questions such as:
- “Which of these phones is better for battery life?”
- “Explain this topic and show me the best sources to read next.”
- “Compare these travel options using the pages I already opened.”
AI Mode can search across recent Chrome tabs and combine tabs, images, and files as context. It also returns links back to the web, so the answer can become a starting point for reading rather than a dead-end paragraph. That search orientation is why it is usually the strongest choice for a broad, open-ended everyday search.

That sentence comes from a Google Search AI Mode background document accessed on October 20, 2026. The accessed view does not provide a separate publication date, so the statement should not be treated as a dated, independently verified benchmark. It does, however, illustrate the type of multi-part question AI Mode is intended to handle.

Choose AI Mode when the answer is still taking shape
Use AI Mode if you are not sure which sources you need yet. It is suited to discovery, such as narrowing a destination, comparing product categories, understanding a new subject, or asking “what should I look at next?” The ability to continue with follow-ups keeps the search in one evolving thread.
What AI Mode does not replace
AI Mode is not a guarantee that every generated statement is correct, complete, or current. Google’s published material does not provide an independent head-to-head test of factuality, latency, or answer quality against Gemini in a tab. Open the linked sources it provides when a decision depends on an exact specification, date, eligibility rule, or other detail.
What Gemini in Chrome’s side panel is best at
Gemini in Chrome is an assistant attached to the browser tab you are already reading. Google’s help documentation says it uses the current tab’s content by default. You can add other tabs with @ or share up to 10 open tabs directly.
This page-grounded design is the better fit when the source material is already in front of you. The page stays visible while the conversation runs in the side panel, which avoids repeatedly copying text into a separate chat.
Tasks the side panel supports
Google documents these uses for Gemini in Chrome:
- Summarizing an article or explaining a difficult passage.
- Testing your knowledge of what the page says.
- Modifying a recipe to fit a different requirement.
- Comparing or consolidating information across several pages.
- Making recommendations from the material you shared.
- Drafting a Gmail message based on the page or discussion.
- Answering questions about audio or video that is playing in the tab.
Because the current tab is the default context, you should identify when a question requires information beyond that page. Add the relevant tabs instead of assuming the assistant can see every tab you have open.

How to share multiple tabs
- Open the page you want to use as the starting source.
- Open the Gemini side panel with Chrome’s Ask Gemini button.
- Ask your question about the current page.
- To add another page, use
@in the conversation and select the tab you want to share. - Repeat until the set contains the pages you need, up to Google’s documented limit of 10 shared tabs.
- Ask Gemini to compare, consolidate, or extract the specific fields you care about.
This workflow is particularly useful for a shortlist of reviews, policy pages, recipes, or travel listings where the relevant evidence is already open.

What Gemini in a normal browser tab is best at
The standalone Gemini web app at gemini.google.com gives you an independent conversation. It can be opened in Chrome or another supported browser, so it is the most browser-agnostic option of the three.
Google explicitly distinguishes this experience from Gemini in Chrome. In the standalone tab, you do not get the same direct Chrome page-sharing integration or Live mode available through Gemini in Chrome. You therefore need to provide the context through your prompt or whatever attachments and inputs the standalone app supports, rather than selecting the current Chrome page from the side panel.
When a separate tab is the cleaner choice
- You want a blank conversation that is not anchored to the article currently open.
- You are moving between browsers or devices and do not want a Chrome-specific workflow.
- You are brainstorming, drafting, or asking a general question without a page to inspect.
- You want to keep research context separate from the page you are reading.
For a page-summary request, the separate tab usually adds a manual context-sharing step. For an independent conversation, that separation is an advantage rather than a limitation.

Choose AI Mode in Chrome. Phrase the question as a complete problem, then use follow-ups to narrow the scope, request comparisons, or ask for sources. Its search-oriented responses and web links are designed for this exploratory stage.

“Summarize the article I am reading”
Choose Gemini in Chrome’s side panel. The current tab is already the default context, so ask for a summary and specify the format you need—for example, key claims, supporting evidence, unresolved questions, or a five-bullet brief.
“Compare several pages I already opened”
Use the side panel if the pages are the evidence you want to compare. Share the tabs explicitly with @, staying within the 10-tab limit, and name the comparison fields. Use AI Mode instead if you also need to discover additional sources beyond those pages.
“Find the best option and explain the trade-offs”
Start in AI Mode when you need a market-wide search or fresh alternatives. Start in the side panel when your shortlist is already assembled in open tabs and you want a recommendation grounded in those pages. In either case, ask the assistant to show which source supports each important conclusion.
“I want a normal conversation, not browser assistance”
Open Gemini in a browser tab. The standalone app keeps the conversation independent from the current page and works outside Chrome, while the side panel is purpose-built for page context.
“I need to ask about a video or audio playing in Chrome”
Use Gemini in Chrome’s side panel. Google’s documented Chrome workflows include questions about played audio or video; the standalone browser tab does not provide that same direct Chrome integration.

The interface choice matters, but the way you ask matters too. These steps keep the source and the task clear.
- Identify the starting context. If you need web discovery, begin with AI Mode. If the evidence is already on a page, begin with the side panel. If there is no browser context, use a Gemini tab.
- State the decision or output. Ask for a comparison, summary, explanation, checklist, or recommendation rather than a vague “tell me about this.”
- Name the boundaries. Include dates, geography, budget, audience, file type, or any other condition that changes the answer.
- Attach or share the right material. In the side panel, add tabs with
@; in AI Mode, include the relevant tabs, images, or files when available; in a standalone tab, provide the context manually. - Use follow-ups to test the answer. Ask which claim is uncertain, what information is missing, and which source supports a recommendation.
- Open primary pages before acting. Treat generated text as a navigation and synthesis aid, then verify prices, specifications, eligibility, dates, and policy language on the linked source.
Availability, account requirements, and rollout limits
Gemini in Chrome is rolling out over time, so the feature may not be available in every country or territory. Google says you need an eligible, signed-in Chrome profile. The feature is unavailable in Incognito mode and for profiles that are not signed in.
Eligibility can also depend on age, language, device, and rollout status. Mobile support and the exact feature set vary by platform. Gemini in Chrome is built into Chrome; Google says it does not require installing an extension. On desktop, access is through the Ask Gemini button when the feature is enabled for your profile.
Auto browse
Google’s Chrome product page currently says auto browse is available only to Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra subscribers in the United States. That is an eligibility statement, not a universal requirement for every Gemini in Chrome conversation. Subscription availability, supported locations, and feature rules can change, so check the current Google account and Chrome notices for your region.
Why you may not see Gemini in Chrome
- Rollout has not reached your location: availability is being expanded over time and is not identical in every country or territory.
- You are using the wrong profile: sign in to an eligible Chrome profile; unsigned-in profiles cannot use the feature.
- You are in Incognito: Gemini in Chrome is unavailable there.
- Your device or language is unsupported: eligibility varies by device and language, and mobile coverage differs from desktop.
- You are looking for an extension: the feature is built into Chrome, so installing an extension is not the documented setup.
- You are confusing the products: opening
gemini.google.comgives you the standalone web app, not the Chrome side panel.
If the Ask Gemini control is absent after checking those conditions, the likely explanation is account or rollout eligibility rather than a missing extension. Google’s labels and supported platforms can change as the feature expands.
How to make a fair choice
Use this quick decision rule:
- Question first, sources later: AI Mode in Chrome.
- Source first, explanation or comparison now: Gemini in Chrome’s side panel.
- No Chrome context or a different browser: Gemini in a browser tab.
For a two-stage project, combine them: use AI Mode to discover and narrow the field, open the strongest sources, then use the side panel to compare those pages. Move to a standalone Gemini tab when you want to continue the discussion without the browser’s page context.
What the evidence does—and does not—show
Google’s descriptions support a task-based distinction: AI Mode is search-first, Gemini in Chrome is page-first, and the standalone Gemini website is independent of Chrome’s direct page-sharing controls. They do not establish that one interface always produces more truthful answers, responds faster, or reasons better. Those qualities can vary with the prompt, sources, account, model availability, and the information supplied.
