VAST tells a video player what ad to load and how to handle its response; VPAID was an interface that let an executable ad communicate with the player. They were not equivalent alternatives: VPAID interaction could be delivered within a VAST response. VPAID is now deprecated, with IAB Tech Lab identifying SIMID for interactive media and OMID for measurement as successor standards.
What VAST and VPAID each do
| Dimension | VAST | VPAID |
|---|---|---|
| Primary role | A standardized ad response carrying metadata and instructions from an ad server to a digital video player. IAB Tech Lab’s VAST overview describes the format. | An interface between a player and an executable ad unit, designed to support interactive in-stream ads. IAB Tech Lab’s VPAID page explains its role. |
| Executable interaction | VAST by itself does not make an ad richly interactive; its basic ad formats are relatively simple and non-executable. | Could enable interactive behavior when both the creative and player supported the interface. |
| Measurement | VAST has evolved to support verification and measurement integrations, including Open Measurement support in its version history. | Historically, an executable unit could report playback and user interactions through the player interface. |
| Current status | A maintained, versioned standard. The VAST page lists version 4.3 and CTV updates. | Deprecated. IAB Tech Lab points to SIMID and OMID for interactive and measurement use cases. |
Why they are not competing ad formats
VAST is the ad-delivery response; VPAID was an execution and communication layer. A VAST response alone does not prove a creative is interactive or that a player can run it. Conversely, VPAID did not replace the need for an ad-response mechanism such as VAST. The distinction is useful when a platform advertises “VAST support”: confirm the specific version and features rather than assuming that it means VPAID-style interaction.

VAST was initially launched in 2008, according to the Interactive Advertising Bureau’s overview. IAB Tech Lab lists VAST 4.2 as released in June 2019, VAST 4.3 in December 2022, and a CTV addendum in 2024; its VAST page was last updated July 18, 2024. These release dates show the standard’s history, not which versions are deployed by every provider.

What VPAID meant for compatibility and delivery
VPAID depends on the player being able to execute a compatible ad unit, so the creative, runtime, player, and delivery path all matter. IAB Tech Lab’s CTV Programmatic Guide notes that VPAID can slow loading or cause malfunctions, and that it complicates measurement in environments such as server-side ad insertion (SSAI). Its standards direction separates the media file from interactive and verification components, helping video remain accessible when those components cannot execute.

Legacy creatives need particular care. IAB Tech Lab’s Video Tech FAQs gives the example of a Flash VPAID ad trying to play in an HTML5 player. That is a compatibility example, not evidence that every VPAID implementation fails in HTML5. Test the actual creative and target playback environment together.

- For ad delivery: identify the VAST version and features supported by both the ad server and the player, then validate the response in the target environment.
- For interactive media: evaluate SIMID, which IAB Tech Lab identifies as the successor for VPAID interactive use cases. Confirm that the player, creative, and serving workflow support the needed features.
- For measurement: assess OMID support separately. IAB identifies it as a successor for VPAID’s measurement use case; this does not establish universal support across vendors.
- For CTV or SSAI: check how the complete delivery and measurement path handles interactive and verification components, rather than relying on a player’s VAST label alone.
IAB Tech Lab’s 2024 VAST addendum provides context for VAST 4.2 and SIMID support. The presence of a feature in a specification is not a guarantee that a particular ad server, player, or vendor has implemented it.
