Neither phone is a clear winner for everyone. Choose the iPhone 18 Pro Max if you prefer iOS, want Apple’s variable-aperture main camera and manual controls, or value Apple’s published battery claims. Choose the Galaxy S26 Ultra if you prefer Android, want Samsung’s built-in Privacy Display and dedicated 3x and 5x optical telephoto cameras, or want a lighter handset. These are manufacturer specifications and claims—not results from matched independent tests.
How do their prices, storage and platforms compare?
In the U.S., both launched at roughly $1,300. Apple announced a $1,299 starting price for the iPhone 18 Pro Max; Samsung listed the Galaxy S26 Ultra at $1,299.99. Those are launch prices, not guarantees of what either phone costs now. Check current listings and promotions before buying. Apple’s September 9, 2026 announcement and Samsung’s February 25, 2026 U.S. announcement give the launch details.

The platform is the practical dividing line: choose the operating system and ecosystem you want to use every day. The available product announcements do not establish which phone has longer software support or better cross-platform compatibility, so those are not sound reasons to declare a winner from these specifications alone. Which phone has the better camera?
The published specifications point to different camera approaches, not a proven image-quality winner. Samsung lists four rear cameras and dedicated optical telephotos at 3x and 5x. Apple’s announcement emphasizes a 48MP Fusion Main camera with variable aperture and manual controls. Megapixel counts and lens options alone cannot show which phone takes better photos; the sources here do not provide a matched sample or controlled camera test.

| Camera feature | iPhone 18 Pro Max | Galaxy S26 Ultra |
|---|---|---|
| Highlighted rear-camera hardware | 48MP Fusion Main with variable aperture | 200MP wide, 50MP ultra-wide, 10MP 3x telephoto and 50MP 5x telephoto |
| Zoom terminology in manufacturer material | Not stated in the cited announcement | 3x and 5x optical; 2x and 10x described as “optical quality” |
| Manual camera controls | Aperture, shutter speed, white balance and histogram | Not stated in the cited material |
Samsung’s “optical quality” wording for 2x and 10x is distinct from its stated optical zoom at 3x and 5x. For Apple, the variable aperture and manual controls are the more distinctive documented features for people who want to adjust a shot themselves. Apple also describes an Apple Reference Image feature that stores signed sensor data for comparison with an edited image; that describes Apple’s feature and workflow, not proof of every aspect of an image’s provenance. How do the displays differ?
Both phones have a 6.9-inch-class display with an adaptive refresh rate reaching 120Hz. Apple specifies a 6.9-inch diagonal all-screen OLED at 2868 × 1320 and 460 pixels per inch, with ProMotion up to 120Hz, Always-On and an anti-reflective coating. Samsung lists a 6.9-inch QHD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X display with adaptive 1–120Hz refresh, 2600-nit peak brightness and a built-in Privacy Display. The manufacturers’ specifications use different descriptions and measurement conventions; there is no independent brightness, color or viewing test here to establish which screen looks better.

Privacy Display is the standout difference if you want to limit side-angle visibility. Samsung presents it as a first for mobile phones; that is Samsung’s product positioning, not independent verification of a category-wide first. Which has better battery life and charging?
The available battery figures measure different things, so they do not establish a battery-life winner. Apple claims up to 45 hours of video playback for eSIM-only iPhone 18 Pro Max models. Its announcement also says five minutes of wired charging can provide around seven hours of video playback; Apple’s fast-charge test used preproduction devices and specified cables and adapters. Samsung lists a typical 5,000mAh battery and claims charging can reach 75% in 30 minutes. Samsung says actual battery life varies with network, usage and other conditions.

Apple’s representative-use battery model also reports up to 30 hours of use, based on a stated mix of applications and preproduction hardware. That is a different measure from Samsung’s battery capacity and charging claim, not a direct comparison of endurance. Which is easier to carry?
Samsung’s listed phone is lighter and thinner: 214g and 7.9mm, compared with Apple’s 249g and 8.75mm. That is a 35g weight difference and 0.85mm in depth, based on the manufacturers’ published handset specifications; case weight is not included. Samsung notes that weight may vary by country or region. If you often carry your phone in a pocket or use it one-handed, the Galaxy’s lower listed weight may matter more than the small difference in thickness. Which flagship should you buy?
- Pick the iPhone 18 Pro Max if you want iOS, Apple’s variable-aperture main camera and manual camera controls, or prefer Apple’s ecosystem. Treat its video-playback and charging figures as manufacturer test claims rather than a guarantee of your own results.
- Pick the Galaxy S26 Ultra if you want Android, a built-in Privacy Display, dedicated 3x and 5x optical telephotos, or the lighter listed body. Samsung’s 2x and 10x “optical quality” zoom is not the same specification as optical zoom.
- Compare them in person if display quality, camera results, sustained performance or real-world battery life will decide the purchase. The available manufacturer material does not provide matched independent tests for those questions.
For U.S. buyers, Samsung’s launch announcement named Amazon Stores among its retail channels, but that does not confirm today’s listing, configuration or price. Check the actual seller and current terms before ordering. Samsung’s launch announcement.
