The right outdoor TV depends first on how much direct sunlight reaches the screen, then on the model’s weather protection, operating limits, and features. “Full-shade,” “partial-sun,” and “full-sun” are the clearest exposure categories in manufacturers’ product information. The five groupings below are a practical way to compare options, not a formal industry standard: a single TV can be full-sun, weather-protected, and smart at the same time.
1. Full-shade outdoor TVs
Choose a full-shade model for a covered patio, porch, or gazebo where direct sunlight does not fall on the screen during viewing hours. Shade reduces the challenge of bright ambient light, but the TV still needs suitable protection for the outdoor conditions where it will be installed. Furrion identifies covered patios and gazebos as full-shade use cases (Furrion Aurora outdoor TVs).

2. Partial-sun outdoor TVs
Partial-sun models suit locations with a mix of sun and shade. The label alone does not establish how much direct sunlight a particular screen can tolerate, so check the exact model’s instructions and placement limits. Samsung’s guidance for The Terrace recommends partial shade and keeping the TV out of direct sunlight (Samsung support: Enjoy your entertainment outside with the Terrace TV).

That caution is especially important because product labels and manuals may describe different exposure conditions. For example, Furrion’s Aurora Partial Sun 2 manual says the TV is designed for an area where no direct sunlight hits the LED screen. Read the manual for the model you are considering rather than treating “partial sun” as a universal allowance (Furrion Aurora Partial Sun 2 manual).

3. Full-sun outdoor TVs
For a brighter, more exposed viewing area, look for a model expressly designated for full-sun use. Furrion and SunBriteTV both distinguish full-sun products in their outdoor ranges (Furrion Aurora outdoor TVs; SunBriteTV).
“Full sun” is not permission to ignore placement or heat warnings. Check the model’s current specifications and manual for sunlight, temperature, and installation restrictions. Furrion’s 2025-revision Partial Sun 2 manual, for instance, gives that product an operating range of -24°F to 122°F; that figure applies to the cited model, not outdoor TVs generally (Furrion Aurora Partial Sun 2 manual).
4. Weather-protection-first models
Outdoor weather protection is a separate buying dimension from sunlight suitability. Compare the exact model’s ingress-protection rating and installation instructions, but do not use an IP rating as a proxy for screen brightness, glare handling, or heat tolerance.

Samsung states that The Terrace is rated IP55 and explicitly warns that it should not be submerged (Samsung support: Enjoy your entertainment outside with the Terrace TV). Furrion lists IP54 for its Aurora product family (Furrion Aurora outdoor TVs). These are manufacturer claims for those products; they do not establish one rating shared by all outdoor TVs or make a set suitable for every exposed location.
5. Feature-defined models: smart or standard
Some outdoor TV ranges offer both smart and standard versions. Furrion lists both kinds in its Aurora range (Furrion Aurora outdoor TVs). A smart model may provide the streaming functions you want without an additional player, but verify the exact set’s apps, network support, and inputs. If a standard model better suits your setup, confirm that it has an input compatible with the streaming device you plan to use.
How to choose the right outdoor TV
Check sunlight at the screen
Observe the installation spot at the times you expect to watch. The sun’s path changes through the day, and Furrion’s manual recommends accounting for its movement before mounting. Classify the location by the light that actually reaches the screen, not just by whether the patio has a roof (Furrion Aurora Partial Sun 2 manual).

Compare brightness and glare handling
Match the TV to the viewing light and check the model’s stated specifications. Samsung describes anti-glare and adaptive-brightness features for The Terrace (Samsung The Terrace product page). Furrion also offers brightness guidance, but its thresholds are manufacturer recommendations rather than a universal outdoor-TV standard (Furrion: What’s the Best TV to Use Outside?). Independent testing, where available, can provide another basis for comparison.
Read weather and operating-condition limits
Look up the exact IP rating, allowed operating temperature, sunlight warnings, and any instructions on screen temperature or placement. The rating addresses ingress protection; it does not by itself establish whether the screen will be readable in direct sun or whether the TV can operate safely in the site’s heat.
Plan connections, mounting, and maintenance
Decide where power, network access, and connected devices will go before installation. Furrion warns that rear connections may be obstructed after mounting and recommends professional installation and two people for moving or installation (Furrion Aurora Partial Sun 2 manual). Confirm that the mount matches the chosen TV’s mounting pattern, size, and weight. A compatible outdoor TV cover or dust cover can be an additional protective measure, but check the model’s instructions and cover fit; a cover does not replace following placement and weather limits. Samsung mentions an optional dust cover for The Terrace (Samsung support: Enjoy your entertainment outside with the Terrace TV).

Consider audio and connectivity as part of the setup
Confirm that the TV’s apps, network support, and inputs match how you plan to watch. Audio is another practical consideration: Samsung recommends pairing The Terrace with its outdoor-optimized soundbar, an optional setup suggestion for that product rather than a general requirement for every outdoor TV (Samsung The Terrace product page).

The best fit is the model whose exposure category, brightness and glare handling, weather protection, and operating limits match the installation site. Start with full-shade, partial-sun, or full-sun placement; then confirm the exact TV’s manual and specifications before buying. There is no evidence here of a universal five-type standard or a single brightness threshold that settles the choice for every outdoor setting.
