Windows 11 hotpatch updates install monthly security fixes without requiring a restart for that update—but the feature is for eligible, managed devices, not every Windows 11 PC. The normal schedule still includes a restart-required baseline update once each quarter, and exceptions can change the timing.
What is Windows 11 hotpatching?
Hotpatching is a Windows servicing option for monthly security updates. Microsoft describes hotpatch updates as “Monthly B release security updates that install and take effect without requiring you to restart the device.” They extend Windows Update and are deployed through Windows Autopatch.

A hotpatch month is not the same as a quarterly baseline month. The baseline carries cumulative update content and features and requires a restart; the two planned monthly updates that follow are designed to deliver security fixes without requiring one. See Microsoft’s Hotpatch updates guidance for the servicing model.

Who can use hotpatch updates?
Hotpatching is an enterprise-managed capability. Eligibility depends on the license, Windows version, baseline status, and management configuration, and Microsoft’s requirements can change. Its current guidance lists eligible licensing such as Windows 11 Enterprise E3 or E5, Windows 11 Education A3 or A5, Microsoft 365 F3, Microsoft 365 Business Premium, and Windows 365 Enterprise.

The device must run Windows 11 version 24H2 or later, have the latest baseline installed, and be managed with an Intune Windows quality update policy that enables hotpatching. Microsoft’s Windows Autopatch FAQ also identifies virtualization-based security (VBS) and processor conditions, so a listed license alone does not establish device eligibility. Check the current Windows Autopatch FAQ and deployment guidance for the exact license and device requirements before rollout.
What is the update schedule?
The planned cycle has four quarterly baseline months and eight hotpatch months in a year: the first month of each quarter brings a restart-required baseline, followed by two months of security updates designed not to require a restart. This is a planned cadence, not a guarantee that every device will receive exactly that sequence.

- Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
- Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.
- Baseline month: The cumulative baseline requires a restart and carries cumulative update content and features.
- Hotpatch months: The following two monthly security updates are designed to install without a required restart.
- Exceptions: Security needs can prompt an extra baseline outside the planned cycle. A device that missed the latest baseline may need to install it and restart before receiving a hotpatch.
Version upgrades can also affect the cycle. Check Microsoft’s Windows 11 release information for the target version’s calendar and current KB/build details.
Why did my device get a regular cumulative update?
If a device does not meet hotpatch requirements, Microsoft offers the standard latest cumulative update instead. That update requires a restart, and the device’s existing update-ring configuration remains in effect. A device that is behind on its baseline may also need the restart-required baseline before it can receive the next hotpatch.

Can I restart after installing a hotpatch?
Yes. A user or administrator can restart the device at any time. Restarting does not remove the installed hotpatch: the device remains on its installed hotpatch KB and OS version. Feature updates on the regular servicing track arrive with the next quarterly cumulative baseline.
Can IT remove or roll back a hotpatch?
Microsoft does not support automatic rollback of a hotpatch. An administrator can uninstall it, but uninstalling requires a restart. Microsoft’s guidance for investigating an issue is to uninstall the hotpatch and install the standard cumulative update with a restart; see the hotpatch troubleshooting guidance.

Does hotpatching work on every Windows 11 version?
No. Microsoft’s release information states that hotpatching is not available on Windows 11 version 26H1. Availability and release details are version- and month-specific, so check the current version calendar before planning a deployment.

| Update type | Restart required? | What it delivers | When it applies |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quarterly baseline | Yes | Cumulative update content and features | First month of each planned quarter; an extra baseline may be issued for security needs |
| Hotpatch | No, for the hotpatch update | Monthly security fixes | Two planned months after each quarterly baseline, for eligible devices |
| Standard latest cumulative update | Yes | Standard cumulative update | Offered when a device is not eligible for hotpatching |
Hotpatching does not replace the regular update track or remove the need to keep a device current. Microsoft lists 36-month servicing timelines for Windows 11 Enterprise and Education editions and 24-month timelines for Home and Pro editions; see its Windows 11 lifecycle FAQ.
