Choose based on what you want generated: openapi-typescript produces TypeScript declarations, openapi-typescript plus openapi-fetch adds a typed fetch-oriented request client, and OpenAPI Generator produces client code for a selected generator target. They solve different parts of the problem, so the right fit depends on how much request behavior and generated structure your team wants.
How the three approaches differ
| Approach | Generated output and runtime layer | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| openapi-typescript | Generates TypeScript types from an OpenAPI description; it does not itself provide the fetch client shown in the companion guide. | You want schema-derived types and plan to write or compose the request layer yourself. |
| openapi-typescript + openapi-fetch | Uses generated schema types with a fetch-oriented client that checks endpoint paths, parameters, request bodies, and response results. | You want typed endpoint calls without choosing a generator that emits a larger client library structure. |
| OpenAPI Generator | Generates client code for a selected target and supports configuration and mappings. | You want generated client code and need to configure the target output for your project. |
These are not three interchangeable client generators: the first produces declarations, the second pairs declarations with a request client, and OpenAPI Generator offers multiple code-generation targets. See the openapi-fetch documentation and the official TypeScript and TypeScript Fetch target pages.

When to choose openapi-typescript alone
Use openapi-typescript when the main requirement is translating an OpenAPI schema into TypeScript declarations and your team wants to own the HTTP layer. This leaves your application in control of details such as request construction and transport integration, while giving the compiler schema-derived types to check against.

You need your own request code or a compatible client that consumes the generated types. If you want a ready fetch-oriented calling interface, use the documented openapi-fetch pairing instead.
#1 Best Overall
When to pair it with openapi-fetch
The documented combination uses the generated paths type with createClient. The client checks endpoint paths, parameters, and request bodies, and gives typed result fields: data for successful 2xx responses and error for 4xx/5xx responses or a default error response. The exact behavior is described in the project guide.
This route is a practical starting point when you want typed calls through a fetch-oriented API but prefer to keep the generated artifact focused on declarations. It still relies on your OpenAPI document accurately describing the deployed service; compile-time checks cannot prove that a live server behaves according to the document.

- TypeScript implements a superset of syntax for strictly typed development, facilitating deep static analysis and enhanced development environment integration. The compiler translates source into standard script formats, ensuring parity across any runtime.
- TypeScript is ideal for front-end developers, full-stack engineers, and software architects who build large-scale web applications. It serves those looking to improve code excellence, reduce bugs through static checking, and maintain complex projects more.

When OpenAPI Generator is a better fit
Choose OpenAPI Generator when you want generated client code and need options for the target output, mappings, or generated structure. The tool supports multiple generators, so make a deliberate target choice rather than treating every TypeScript target as equivalent. Its usage guide documents selecting a generator, passing a JSON or YAML configuration file, and using type and import mappings for supported generators.
Check the target’s maturity
At the time the official pages were accessed on October 7, 2026, the typescript-fetch target was labeled stable, while the generic typescript target was labeled experimental. These labels are version-sensitive; confirm the current documentation and inspect the generated code before adopting a target.
Review platform and generated-code fit
Before committing, generate output from your actual specification and check whether its imports, transport assumptions, configuration options, and code organization fit your runtime and publishing workflow. Generated code adds an artifact your team must review and keep aligned with both the specification and generator configuration.
Set up the typed fetch approach
The maintainers’ documented setup installs the runtime client, the schema-to-types generator, and TypeScript, then generates a declaration file from a YAML specification. A typical workflow follows these steps:
- Install the packages: add
openapi-fetch,openapi-typescript, andtypescriptto the project, following the official guide. - Generate declarations: run
npx openapi-typescript ./path/to/openapi.yaml -o ./path/to/openapi.d.ts, replacing the paths with your specification and desired output location. - Use the generated schema: import the generated
pathstype and pass it tocreateClientas shown in the guide. - Check types in CI: run
tsc --noEmitand consider enabling TypeScript’snoUncheckedIndexedAccessoption, as the maintainers recommend.
For OpenAPI Generator, select the intended generator and pass options through the CLI or a JSON/YAML config file as described in the usage guide. Validate the chosen target and its emitted code against your specification and platform requirements.

Make the choice by ownership and output
- Choose openapi-typescript alone if you need schema-derived types but want to design request behavior yourself.
- Choose openapi-typescript with openapi-fetch if you want typed endpoint calls through a fetch-oriented client and the documented
data/errorresult pattern. - Choose an OpenAPI Generator TypeScript target if generated client code, target-specific output, and generator configuration are central requirements. Verify the target’s current status before relying on it.
Whichever route you use, typechecking validates TypeScript code against generated declarations; it does not test live server behavior or guarantee that the specification matches the deployed API. Keep the specification aligned with the service and run the type check in CI. Official documentation describes these tools’ capabilities, but does not establish a fair comparative benchmark for speed, bundle weight, or developer productivity.
