There is no single kind of enterprise MCP gateway. Some products proxy MCP servers an organization runs; others offer a managed, policy-controlled gateway or a catalog of managed connectors. The right choice depends on where the gateway and its control plane run, how identity and per-tool permissions work, who operates the underlying servers, what audit data is available, and how the service is priced.
What an enterprise MCP gateway can mean
The label “MCP gateway” covers several different jobs, and products may combine them. Before comparing vendors, establish which layer you need:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Managed connector catalog: A service aggregates connectors and handles some of their operation. Check connector coverage, account linking, tenant isolation, data handling, and catalog or usage charges.
- Reverse proxy: A gateway routes MCP traffic to servers your organization operates. The team still owns the downstream servers and their maintenance.
- Policy enforcement point: The gateway applies identity and authorization controls to requests, potentially on every tool call.
- Server lifecycle management: A platform helps discover, start, update, or otherwise manage MCP servers. Confirm exactly which lifecycle tasks it takes on.
These roles are not interchangeable. A managed connector catalog may reduce the work of integrating services, while a proxy for self-hosted servers may offer a better fit for an organization that needs to control its own server environment. A broad “gateway” label does not establish that a product has native MCP behavior or equivalent authorization and auditing.

| Option | Documented role and deployment | What to evaluate |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft MCP Gateway | An open-source reverse proxy and management layer for MCP servers in Kubernetes, with session-aware routing, authorization, and lifecycle management. | Kubernetes operations, workload identity, routing, and responsibility for running and maintaining the stack. |
| Microsoft MCP Server for Enterprise | A separate, Graph-backed public-preview service for read-only Entra identity and directory scenarios. It follows applicable Graph permissions and tenant policies. | Microsoft-specific scope, preview limits, underlying data licenses, throttling, and Graph activity logging. |
| Docker MCP Enterprise Gateway | Its product documentation describes deployment in a customer’s cloud, identity-based access, policy evaluation, credential injection, routing, and structured tool-call events. | Identity-provider integration, policy administration, audit integration, and whether the deployment meets control requirements. |
| Permit MCP Gateway | Documentation describes hosted, customer-controlled, and fully on-premises deployment options. Customer-controlled and on-premises deployments are Enterprise plan options. | Control-plane placement, the local policy decision point, network boundaries, and Enterprise plan cost. |
| Amazon Bedrock AgentCore Gateway | AWS guidance identifies it as an MCP gateway option and describes semantic search for tool discovery. | AWS service dependencies, the need for tool discovery, and current AWS pricing and limits. |
| Managed connector-catalog gateways | A June 2026 vendor-published comparison groups StackOne, Workato, Zapier, Merge, Arcade, Composio, and Pipedream in this category. | Treat the grouping as a vendor comparison, not an independent audit. Verify connector coverage, account linking, tenant isolation, data handling, and catalog or usage pricing. |
General API or AI gateways, tunnels, and security proxies may supply parts of an MCP gateway role, but their category name alone does not establish native MCP protocol support. Verify protocol behavior, authorization semantics, tool-call auditing, and who supports the integration.
Microsoft’s two offerings are not the same gateway
Microsoft MCP Gateway is the open-source Kubernetes-oriented proxy and management project. Microsoft MCP Server for Enterprise is a separate Graph-backed service currently described in Microsoft documentation as a public preview. The latter addresses read-only Entra identity and directory scenarios; it is not the self-hosted Kubernetes gateway under another name.
Microsoft says the enterprise service respects existing Graph permissions and tenant security policies, and directs administrators to Graph activity logs for activity. Its documentation states a limit of 100 calls per minute per user for this preview service, with standard Microsoft Graph throttling also applying to the relevant operation. Treat those as product-specific documented limits, not general gateway capacity guidance. Check Microsoft’s current documentation for preview status and scope before adoption.

How to compare gateways for your environment
Use a common set of questions in vendor reviews and architecture design. Record separately where the data plane, control plane, and policy engine run; a single deployment label such as “cloud” may not answer all three.
Deployment and operational ownership
- Can the gateway run as a managed service, in your cloud or VPC, in Kubernetes, or fully on-premises?
- Where does its control plane run, and where are policy decisions made?
- Who hosts, patches, scales, and updates the gateway and each downstream server or connector?
- What operational work remains with your platform team if the service is managed?
Identity, credentials, and authorization
- Does the system distinguish a human user’s identity from a service identity, and can it preserve least privilege through downstream calls?
- How are upstream credentials stored and injected? Which party can access them?
- Can policy restrict access by organization, server, tool, or individual call?
- Is policy evaluated for every tool call? Docker’s product documentation describes a per-call policy evaluation path; verify how the actual configuration behaves.
- For Microsoft’s Graph-backed preview, confirm that existing Graph permissions and tenant policies match the intended access pattern.
Audit, observability, and data handling
- Which request, identity, tool, and policy-decision fields appear in logs?
- Can events flow into your monitoring and incident-response systems?
- What is the retention period, and can it be configured?
- How are sensitive arguments, results, and credentials protected or omitted from records?
- For the Microsoft enterprise preview, administrators are directed to Graph activity logs. Docker describes structured tool-call events. These descriptions do not by themselves establish retention, completeness, or suitability for your compliance needs.
Connector and server lifecycle
- Are you connecting servers your organization already runs, or relying on a vendor’s managed connector catalog?
- How are new tools discovered, approved, versioned, and removed?
- Does semantic discovery or on-demand startup matter to your use case? AWS guidance describes semantic search for tool discovery in AgentCore Gateway.
- What happens when a downstream server is unavailable, changes its tool schema, or needs an urgent security update?
Cloud dependence and portability
Map dependencies before deciding that a deployment is portable. A Kubernetes proxy, a customer-cloud product, a fully on-premises option, and an AWS-aligned managed service impose different cloud, networking, and operations assumptions. Compare those constraints with the work required to operate a self-hosted stack; neither portability nor reduced operational effort is free.
How much does an enterprise MCP gateway cost?
The available published figures do not support a reliable dollar-cost ranking across providers or a defensible total-cost estimate. Ask vendors to quote against the same usage and operating assumptions rather than comparing an advertised starting price with a different service’s enterprise deployment.

Published cost and limit details
- Microsoft MCP Server for Enterprise: Microsoft Learn documentation says there is no additional cost or separate license required to enable the service. Appropriate licenses for the data accessed may still be required. This statement concerns the Graph-backed public-preview service, not Microsoft’s open-source Kubernetes gateway or enterprise MCP gateways generally.
- Permit: Permit’s documentation describes a Community plan with up to 1,000 monthly active identities, 10 tenants, one environment, and seven-day audit-log retention. Its deployment documentation places customer-controlled and fully on-premises deployment on Enterprise plans. Confirm current limits and terms against Permit’s live pricing information before making a decision.
- Other options: The cited material does not establish comparable current enterprise list prices for Docker, AWS, Microsoft MCP Gateway, or the managed connector-catalog category.
Build a comparable quote request
Ask each provider to price the same scenario and show recurring fees separately from costs your organization pays elsewhere. Include:
- Identity count and tenant count
- Expected tool-call volume, peak patterns, and any rate limits
- Number of servers and tools, plus connector or catalog requirements
- Hosting region, network transfer, and customer-cloud infrastructure
- Audit-log fields, retention period, and monitoring integrations
- Support level, service operations, and any required underlying data licenses
For a self-hosted or customer-cloud deployment, include the infrastructure and staff time needed to operate the gateway and downstream servers. A low or absent gateway enablement charge does not establish that the complete architecture has no cost.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Security depends on the design and operation, not the gateway label
A gateway can provide controls such as identity integration, authorization, credential injection, and audit events, but adopting one does not by itself make an MCP environment secure. Verify which paths those controls cover, how they are configured, and who operates them.

Vendor documentation describes intended product controls; it is not an independent assessment of a particular configuration. Security review should cover the implemented architecture and operating procedures.
Is one gateway enough for an entire enterprise?
There is no universal answer in the product descriptions reviewed. A single gateway may simplify policy administration in a bounded environment, while different cloud, network, data, or operational requirements may lead an organization to use more than one gateway pattern. Treat “one gateway for the whole company” as an architecture decision: identify which teams, environments, identities, servers, and data boundaries it must cover, then check whether one deployment can enforce the required policies and audit them consistently.

Likewise, “best MCP gateway” has no provider-independent answer. Start with the required deployment boundary and server ownership model, then validate identity delegation, policy granularity, auditability, and a quote based on shared assumptions. The vendor category matters less than whether the chosen product covers the specific control points your environment needs.
