For direct file syncing between your own devices, choose Syncthing. For a centrally hosted drive, consider Seafile; for files plus calendars, contacts, and collaboration, consider Nextcloud. Peergos focuses on encrypted peer-to-peer storage, while OpenCloud offers self-hosted sharing and collaboration. None is a one-for-one replacement for every part of iCloud Drive: the right choice depends on how you store, access, and share files.
All five are described by the cited sources as free and open-source software. That does not make the complete service cost-free: self-hosting still means providing storage, power, backups, updates, and a way to recover files if something goes wrong.

How these alternatives differ
The main decision is architectural. Syncthing keeps selected folders synchronized directly among participating devices, without a central cloud store. Seafile and Nextcloud are server-based drives. Peergos combines a peer-to-peer encrypted filesystem with self-hosting options. OpenCloud is a self-hosted file-sharing and collaboration platform.
| Option | Architecture and focus | Notable capabilities in the cited profiles | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Syncthing | Direct synchronization among devices | Continuous sync, folder selection, file versioning, TLS-protected communication, cryptographic device identities, and device approval | Keeping files in sync across your own devices without a central web drive |
| Seafile | Server-based file storage organized into libraries | Independent library sync, sharing with users or groups, password-protected download links, upload links, version control, and virtual-drive on-demand sync | A focused hosted or self-hosted drive with sharing and selective access |
| Nextcloud | Self-hosted file platform with a wider application ecosystem | Browser file manager, desktop and mobile sync clients, user/group/public-link sharing, upload links, file and deleted-file recovery, WebDAV, and federated sharing | Files alongside other self-hosted cloud services |
| Peergos | Encrypted peer-to-peer global filesystem, with self-hosting | Fine-grained access control, privacy-focused design goals, messaging, and other communication features | People whose threat model and workflow fit its encrypted peer-to-peer approach |
| OpenCloud | Self-hosted file sharing and collaboration | Public links, workspaces, file history, web-office integrations, and multi-device sync with offline access | Sharing and collaboration on a self-hosted platform |

Which option should you choose?
Choose Syncthing for device-to-device sync
Syncthing is the most direct fit if your main goal is to keep selected folders consistent across computers and other participating devices. It does not provide a conventional central web drive. Because files are synchronized among devices, access depends on the relevant devices being reachable; it is not an always-on cloud store independent of your equipment.
Its profile describes TLS-protected communications, cryptographic device identities, and explicit device approval. These are useful security features, but they do not by themselves establish how Syncthing compares with other tools under every threat model.
Choose Seafile for a focused server-based drive
Seafile organizes content into libraries that can be synced independently. The cited profile lists sharing with users or groups, password-protected download links, upload links, and version control. Its virtual drive can sync files on demand, which may suit a device where you do not want every library stored locally at once.

Confirm current platform support and which edition includes any feature you depend on. The available feature descriptions do not provide a complete, version-by-version comparison of local storage use.
Choose Nextcloud for a broader self-hosted platform
Nextcloud Files includes a browser-based file manager and desktop and mobile sync clients. Its listed file features include user, group, and public-link sharing; upload links; recovery of earlier file versions and deleted files; WebDAV; and federated sharing. The wider Nextcloud ecosystem also includes collaborative editing, calendars, contacts, and communication tools.
This breadth makes Nextcloud the closest fit here for someone trying to bring several cloud-service jobs under one self-hosted platform, rather than replacing file storage alone. It also means more components and capabilities to configure and maintain.

Consider Peergos for its encrypted peer-to-peer model
Peergos describes itself as an encrypted peer-to-peer global filesystem with fine-grained access control and self-hosting options. Its design goals include limiting exposure of file contents and social-graph metadata, and the profile also lists messaging and other communication features.
Recommended Free Tools
Treat those as design goals and model characteristics, not proof that Peergos is categorically more secure than the alternatives. Whether the approach fits depends on your needs, setup, and threat model.
Consider OpenCloud for self-hosted sharing and collaboration
OpenCloud is described as a self-hosted sharing and collaboration solution. Its listed features include public links, workspaces, file history, web-office integrations, and multi-device sync with offline access. The cited profile describes the project as relatively young, so assess its current maturity and support for your particular use before trusting it with important or business-critical data.

What to compare before moving your files
Availability and access
Ask whether you need files available from a central service even when your own computers are off. Syncthing synchronizes among participating devices; it is not a central file store. A server-based setup can make files available through that server, but that also makes its availability, configuration, and maintenance part of your plan.
Sharing with other people
If you need public links, group access, or a way for other people to upload files, compare those requirements against the specific project and edition. The cited profiles describe link and group-sharing options for Seafile, Nextcloud, and OpenCloud. Syncthing is described primarily as device synchronization, not as a conventional web-drive sharing service.

Do not treat “encrypted” as a single, interchangeable feature. Syncthing’s profile describes TLS-protected communications and device identities; Seafile’s lists password-protected library encryption; Peergos emphasizes encrypted peer-to-peer storage. Those descriptions concern different parts of a system and do not establish equivalent protections or a universal security winner.

Local storage and sync behavior
Seafile’s virtual drive is described as syncing files on demand, while Syncthing synchronizes shared folder contents among devices. If local disk usage matters, confirm how the current client handles the particular files and platforms you use; the cited material does not establish a complete version-by-version comparison.
Hosting, backups, and maintenance
With self-hosted software, you are responsible for the service around the software: storage, network access, updates, backups, and recovery. One comparison gives a Raspberry Pi paired with a 4 TB USB drive as an example setup, not a general recommendation or current price quote. A remotely hosted server is another possible pattern, but it does not remove the need to plan for backups and administration.
Quick Recap
A practical way to make the switch
- Write down the job you need done. Separate personal device sync from central access, public or group sharing, file recovery, and collaboration. This prevents choosing a broad platform when you only need folder sync—or choosing sync alone when other people need reliable shared access.
- Pick a candidate by architecture. Start with Syncthing for direct sync; Seafile or Nextcloud for a server-based drive; Peergos for its encrypted peer-to-peer approach; or OpenCloud for self-hosted sharing and collaboration.
- Verify current support for your devices and features. Check project documentation for client availability, release status, edition-specific features, and the exact sharing or recovery functions you rely on.
- Plan storage and recovery before moving the only copy. Decide where the service and files will live, how backups will be made, and how you would restore a file or service failure. A sync copy is not, by itself, a separate backup.
- Try the workflow with a small set of files. Confirm that sync, access, sharing, and recovery behave as you expect before moving your full library or relying on the setup for important work.
