A direct-lit LED TV is an LCD television with LEDs behind the screen, illuminating the panel from the rear. The label describes where the backlight sits; it does not guarantee local dimming, a particular number of dimming zones, or a specific level of picture quality.
How a direct-lit LED TV makes an image
In an LED TV, LEDs provide the light behind an LCD panel; they do not create the picture pixel by pixel. The LCD layer shapes that backlight to form the image. Sharp explains this distinction in its overview of TV backlighting.

In a direct-lit design, LEDs are positioned behind the screen. LG describes them as “several rows of LEDs placed behind the entire surface of the screen” in its comparison of direct-lit, edge-lit, and full-array TVs.
Direct-lit, edge-lit, and full-array local dimming compared
| Term | LED placement or control | What the term tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Edge-lit | LEDs sit along one or more edges; a light guide spreads their illumination across the panel. | Describes edge placement. It can enable a thin design, though uniformity and precise dimming can be challenging. Sharp TV USA |
| Direct-lit | LEDs sit behind the screen, often in a relatively modest arrangement. | Describes rear placement, not whether LEDs can be controlled in separate zones. LG; Sharp TV USA |
| Full-array local dimming | A rear LED array is divided into controllable zones. | Allows illumination to change by area; the label alone does not reveal zone count or tuning quality. LG; Sharp TV USA |
| OLED | Pixels emit their own light instead of relying on an LCD panel and separate backlight. | LCD backlight layouts and local-dimming behavior do not apply in the same way. Sharp TV USA |
Does direct-lit mean the TV has local dimming?
No. Direct-lit identifies LED placement. A direct-lit set may use its backlight without independently dimmable zones. Full-array local dimming is a further feature: the rear LEDs are organized into zones that can change brightness separately. Check the specifications for the exact model rather than inferring dimming capability from “direct-lit.”

What local dimming changes—and its limitation
By reducing illumination in darker parts of a scene while keeping brighter areas lit, local dimming can improve perceived contrast. Because each zone covers an area rather than a single pixel, a bright object against a dark background can produce a visible halo, often called blooming. How noticeable that is depends on the set’s implementation and picture content; the backlight label alone does not establish the result.

- Confirm whether the exact model is described as direct-lit, edge-lit, or full-array.
- Look for an explicit local-dimming specification; do not treat direct-lit as a synonym for local dimming.
- If the manufacturer publishes a zone count, use it as one detail—not a complete measure of picture quality.
- Look for model-specific evidence about screen uniformity and blooming, and consider how the TV performs in the room where you will watch.
These terms describe backlight design, not a universal ranking of image quality. The precise zone count, control algorithm, uniformity, and overall performance cannot be determined from “direct-lit” alone.
