Choose the Right Android Service for Your App’s Work

Android services do not automatically run on a worker thread or escape background limits. Learn when to use started or bound services, foreground service notifications, and WorkManager.

An Android Service is a component for work without its own user interface, but it is not a way to get an automatic worker thread or unlimited background execution. Use a service when its lifecycle or client interface fits the job; use a foreground service only for work the user should notice, and consider WorkManager for most schedulable background tasks.

What is an Android service?

A service is an Android application component that can continue work beyond an activity’s immediate interaction. It has no UI of its own. Its existence does not guarantee that work runs on a separate thread, in a separate process, or indefinitely: by default, a service runs on the app’s main thread in its hosting process.

That threading detail matters. Blocking calls or intensive computation on the main thread can make the interface unresponsive. Move such work to an appropriate background execution mechanism or an explicitly managed worker thread. Choose the mechanism based on the work’s lifecycle and platform limits, not simply because a service sounds like a background worker.

How do started and bound services differ?

Started service: handle work requested by another component

A component starts a service, and Android calls onStartCommand(). The service’s lifecycle is independent of the component that made the request, so it can continue after that component is no longer active. The app is responsible for stopping the service when its work is complete, using stopSelf() from the service or stopService() from another component.

If a started service handles multiple requests, use the start ID-aware stopping pattern, such as stopSelf(startId). That prevents an older request finishing from stopping the service while newer work is still being handled.

Bound service: provide an interface to connected clients

A client calls bindService(). The service returns an IBinder from onBind(), giving the client a way to communicate with it. A bound-only service generally remains available while clients are bound and is destroyed after the last client unbinds.

A service can be both started and bound. In that case, clients unbinding does not end the started work; the app must still stop the service explicitly when that work is done.

When should you use a foreground service or WorkManager?

A foreground service is still a service, but it is intended for work that is noticeable to the user and requires an ongoing status notification. Examples include active music playback or recording a fitness session after the user has given permission. It is not a general-purpose method for keeping arbitrary background work alive. Android Developers advises using another background-work option when the task does not warrant a user-visible notice.

Need Best fit Why
Work can be scheduled and should wait for conditions such as network availability WorkManager or another appropriate background-task API Background-work APIs can account for constraints; Android recommends WorkManager for most use cases.
Ongoing work is plainly noticeable to the user, such as playback or a user-visible fitness session Foreground service It keeps the work user-visible with a status notification, subject to the required type, permissions, and platform rules.
A client needs to call service methods or exchange results through an interface Bound service Binding provides an IBinder communication interface.
Work should exist only while a client remains connected Bound-only service It generally ends when no clients remain bound.

The older IntentService pattern is not a good choice for new apps: Android documents it as unsuitable under background execution limits and deprecated starting with Android 11.

How should a bound service communicate with clients?

Choose the communication mechanism according to whether the client and service share a process, whether requests must run concurrently, and how much thread-safety complexity the implementation can handle.

Mechanism Good fit Trade-off
Local Binder Client and service are in the same app and process Android describes this as the preferred simple approach for local communication.
Messenger Messages can be handled through a simpler queued IPC route Requests are handled as messages rather than through direct concurrent method calls.
AIDL Calls need to be concurrent, particularly across process boundaries Concurrency increases implementation complexity and requires careful thread safety.

Which Android version rules affect services?

Foreground-service and background-work requirements depend on both the Android version running on the device and the app’s target SDK. A rule that applies to apps running on a newer platform is not necessarily the same as a requirement imposed on apps that target a particular API level. Android Developers’ platform-change documentation was updated October 1, 2026; the version-specific points below reflect that documentation as of October 7, 2026.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Platform or target level Relevant requirement
Android 16, API 36 Background jobs started from a foreground service remain subject to their runtime quotas. This applies to JobScheduler and libraries such as WorkManager or DownloadManager. For data transfer in response to a user action, Android points to user-initiated data transfer jobs, which are exempt from ordinary job quotas.
Apps targeting Android 15, API 35 or later Time limits apply to dataSync and mediaProcessing foreground-service types, and there are restrictions on launching some foreground services from BOOT_COMPLETED.
Apps targeting Android 14, API 34 or later Declare the foreground-service type and request the permission associated with the work. A missing type can cause MissingForegroundServiceTypeException; a missing specific permission can cause SecurityException.
Apps targeting Android 12, API 31 or later Foreground services generally cannot be launched while the app is in the background unless an exemption applies. The restriction has documented exceptions, so it is not an absolute ban.

Before shipping a service implementation, check the current Android documentation for the target SDK, the service type and its permissions, background-start exemptions, and any limits that apply to the device’s platform version.
