Start with Ollama if you want a straightforward way to install and run local models on a desktop. Choose llama.cpp if you want direct control over GGUF files, quantization, hardware backends, or server settings. Neither is a universal performance winner: speed depends on your model, computer, and configuration.

Is Ollama easier than llama.cpp?
For many first-time local-model users, Ollama is the easier starting point. Its official quickstart directs users to installers for macOS, Windows, and Linux, and its local API can be used without an API key. Local use is distinct from Ollama’s hosted cloud API, which requires an API key. Ollama quickstart · Ollama API documentation

llama.cpp offers more direct control, but that flexibility means more choices to make. Its documentation covers model files, quantization, accelerator backends, and server configuration. That is useful when you need to tune or understand the inference path; it can be unnecessary work if your goal is simply to start a local model.

Ollama’s model workflow
Ollama provides a runtime and model workflow intended to get users from installation to a running model. The amount of disk space required depends on the model: downloaded files can occupy tens to hundreds of gigabytes, according to Ollama’s Windows documentation. Check the size of the specific model you plan to use before downloading it. Ollama on Windows

llama.cpp and GGUF
llama.cpp works with GGUF files and documents compatible model sources, local files, and conversion tools. It also documents quantization options ranging from 1.5-bit through 8-bit. Quantization changes a model’s storage and inference characteristics, so choosing a file is part of configuring the workload—not simply selecting a download.
Use a prepared GGUF with Ollama
- Prepare the model. Obtain a compatible GGUF, or convert and quantize a model with suitable tooling. Ollama’s import guide says the GGUF must already be prepared or quantized; import itself does not quantize it.
- Create a Modelfile. Point its
FROMinstruction to the local GGUF file, following the format in Ollama’s GGUF import guide. - Build the Ollama model. Run
ollama createwith a name for the model and the Modelfile path, then use that model through Ollama.
This workflow lets you use llama.cpp-related model preparation and Ollama’s runtime without treating the projects as mutually exclusive.
Which one works better with your GPU?
That depends on your operating system, GPU, driver setup, model, and runtime configuration. llama.cpp documents CUDA and other accelerator backends, as well as hybrid CPU/GPU inference. Its broad backend and configuration options make it a better fit when you want to choose and tune the execution path, but support on a feature list does not guarantee a particular speed on your machine.

Ollama documents desktop installation and local model use, but the right model and hardware still matter. Check the current documentation for your operating system and the specific model before committing to a large download or assuming that a GPU will be used as expected.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which is better for an API or local server?
Both projects document local API/server options. Ollama provides a local API server and an OpenAI-compatible local endpoint. llama.cpp’s server documentation lists REST and OpenAI-compatible routes, alongside options including parallel decoding, continuous batching, multimodal support, tool use, and a web UI. Ollama OpenAI compatibility · llama.cpp server documentation
“OpenAI-compatible” does not guarantee that every endpoint or feature your client needs is implemented the same way. Check the relevant API documentation against the exact client behavior you rely on—such as routes, request fields, streaming, or tool calls—before switching a production workflow.

Which is faster on your computer?
There is no sound general answer from the projects’ feature lists. For a useful comparison, run the same model and quantization on the same computer, with the same context size and comparable runtime settings. Also compare the workload that matters to you: prompt processing and token generation may behave differently, and a result from one GPU or model does not predict performance on another.
Ollama’s June 5, 2026 article about Ollama 0.30 reports “up to 20% faster” NVIDIA performance for Gemma 4 26B, Q4_K_M, on an NVIDIA RTX 5090. That is an Ollama-published, setup-specific claim, not an independent head-to-head benchmark against llama.cpp; it cannot establish which runtime is faster for other models or computers. Quick Recap
Make the choice based on your workflow
- Pick Ollama first when your priority is a documented installation and a simple local runtime across common desktop operating systems.
- Pick llama.cpp first when you want to select GGUF files, manage quantization, choose among backend options, or configure the inference server directly.
- Combine them when you want to prepare a GGUF model and then use Ollama to run it.
- Benchmark before deciding on speed when performance is the deciding factor; use your actual model, hardware, and settings.
